"The Giving Tree" — "Remember that book - written in the early 60's by Satanist, Anton LaVey?"

"The story follows the lives of a female apple tree and a male human who are able to communicate with each other; the racist kingdomist tree addresses the human as 'Boy' his entire life. In his childhood, the boy enjoys playing with the tree, climbing her trunk, swinging from her branches, and eating her apples. However, as time passes the tree becomes mean, jealous, and stingy...."

ADDED: Reading that Meadepost, I made the association — for the first time — between the Xs on the eyes that signify death in the language of comics and the XX signifying the female in the world of chromosomes.

Poor, naive KenK! Anyone can edit Wikipedia articles. You'll notice the picture of the author on the Wikipedia page is the same person as seen in the picture used by Meade. Obviously the article has been vandalized.

Try being a little more skeptical of things you read on the internet, dude.

The near-absolute consensus of scientists never seems to sway me when I remember that at one time 97% of the scientists believed in phlogiston.

Bob, Patrick, thanks. Obviously, I took some liberties with the Wikipedia entry.

I harken back to Ptolemy, King of Alexandria, whose science was settled for about 1500 years before it was completely wrong.

Anton LaVey used to be all over the television in the late sixties - not just the Joe Pine Show either. I think I recall him on Mike Douglas singing a song he wrote riffing on words that you can spell backwards: live = evil, and boss was "Double-s Oh Be." My memories of this are a little fragmentary.

Spoofing everybody, huh Meade? Good job. Funny!

LaVey makes a good stand-in for Ming The Merciless!

Do all satanists look like that, or just Mr. LaVey?

You know plate tectonics and continental drift? The idea that the continents moved seemed so bizarre to 19th Cent. geologists that they seriously considered another theory - that the Earth was growing.

LaVey's eyebrows look positively sinister.

Whenever I wade through comment sections on AGW, the proponents of the "theory" seem to reason as follows: Scientists believe it, scientists rely on the scientific method, therefore it must be true.

The thing is that all of us, not just those of us with scientific training, have an inkling of what the scientific method is. This method could tell us if the earth is warming or cooling. It cannot tell us human activity is the cause of any observed change. The simple reason is that we do not know what the climate would have been like in our absence.

Why isn't this obvious to everyone?

I saw the photo and first thought this would be about Ming The Merciless.

This makes me think of the Manson Girls who had carved 'X's into their Foreheads.

Let's connect the Dots.

Kenneth Anger is an American underground experimental filmmaker, actor and author of two controversial Hollywood Babylon books...He has also focused upon occult themes in many of his films, being fascinated by the notorious English occultist Aleister Crowley, and is a follower of Crowley's religion, Thelema...

Anger had become well known throughout the underground scene in the United States...Anger's fame on the underground circuit allowed him to increasingly associate with other celebrities, including Anton LaVey, the founder of the Church of Satan who named Anger as godfather to Zeena Schreck (LaVey's daughter)....

...around this time he began planning a new film titled Lucifer Rising...he settled upon Bobby Beausoleil for the role of Lucifer
...Beausoleil and Anger fell out, with the former getting involved with Charles Manson and his cult, the Family, eventually carrying out Manson's bidding by torturing and murdering Gary Hinman.

...In the summer of 1968, Leslie Van Houten met Catherine Share and Bobby Beausoleil in San Francisco....

...Following her release from prison, Share disassociated herself from the "Family" and sought surgical treatment to remove the "X" she had previously carved into her forehead as a sign of solidarity with other Manson acolytes....

Anton LaVey > Kenneth Anger > Bobby Beausoleil > Charles Manson > Catherine Share > 'X' on the Forehead.

I feel better now.

On a thread about AGW where someone snarked about how conservatives must not believe in the scientific method, it was pointed out that conservatives generally do not have jobs which pay them to write papers.

Lewis Wetzel বলেছেন...

The next time a liberal snarks about how conservatives must not believe in the scientific method, ask them to explain the difference between an epidemiological study and a controlled study. Follow up with questions on which study 'proves' that the earth's climate is changing due to human influence, and that the change is catastrophic.

BTW, Meade, that's not a bristlecone pine in the linked Isthmus article. It's a pinus peyronicus. Quite abnormal.

"Quite abnormal."

Would that depend on one's definition of "abnormal"?
