"Meet the Gaybros: They like sports, hunting, and beer. They make the gay community mad."

I don't know if this Slate article deserves all the traffic it's going to get, but I decided to become part of the problem, if it's a problem. I apologize in advance.

Sounds like a title for a new reality show.

MEET THE GAYBROS!

Dust Bunny Queen বলেছেন...

Wow. Late to the party.... Slate recognizes that not all gay guys are effeminate airy fairy interior decorators. That some like to hunt, play pool and other 'manly' men pursuits.

Not news to the rest of us.

Patrick বলেছেন...

If the "Gay Community" does not like them, the "Gay community" can just fuck right off.

Unknown বলেছেন...

Please what the gay community really doesn't like is abstinent gays. I'm sure these guys clean up as bears in the CD. Would any of these gays pass up a chance with a gaybro. Nope, hard to be picky when you have a can of spam in your hands.

Levi Starks বলেছেন...

So being gay is fine, as long as you're stereotypical in the expression of your gayness?

Does the male homosexual community not want to be seen as men or manly?

Is that the issue?

নামহীন বলেছেন...

Hey, wait a minute.... Hindu deity studded living room, Boston.....isn't Titus from Boston?

edutcher বলেছেন...

5 will get you 10 they also vote (shhhh) the R word.

And I love some of the lines, "gay guys with traditionally manly interests" or "as I glanced around at the Crate & Barrel brand of gayness on display in this open-concept, Hindu deity-studded living room,".

Can't wait until the cookie press that feminism great starts on these poor slobs.

Then they'll find out how much the Lefties love them.

G Joubert বলেছেন...

From the article: "This is such bullshit and just perpetuates the idea that femininity is fake or that people put it on […] "

Which is germaine to something I've been wondering for years: Is that little thang Barney Frank does an actual speech impediment, or is it just your standard-issue breathless gay lisp?

bagoh20 বলেছেন...

How the hell does someone know what the "gay community" thinks? Did they take a vote, because nobody asked me, and they would at least have to ask if I was gay to know if they should ask me. It's been a while since anyone has asked if I'm gay? If I was, I'd definitely be a gaybro, and I'd like other gaybros. That much I'm sure of.

Titus বলেছেন...

I don't resent them but I am not a part of the "gay community".

I have never heard of gaybros.

They are going to Fritz and Club Cafe in the South End which I never go to because both are too gay for me.

I lived in The South End many years ago but moved to the other side of The Charles. The South End is super rich gays and empty nesters and yup scum. Most of my friends left there too because of housing costs. I make good money but not that kind of money or money from mommy-which there is a huge amout of here. You can get a decent one bedroom with parking in the South End for a million. I never had parking while I lived there and it was a fucking nightmare.

For only 700,000 in Cambridge you can get a very nice loft with parking. 1/4 of the tenants in my building are 20 something students and their parents paid in full for their condo and pay all their bills and the 700.00 condo fees-totally hate them.

tits.

The entire article is gross and it would be more interesting if they were actually hunting somewhere in Maine with guns-which I don't oppose. I grew up with guns.

Palladian বলেছেন...

Here's some news for people: there is no gay community.

Anything proceeded by the word "community" is the invention of media people and non-profit organizations.

নামহীন বলেছেন...

Maybe they are just lesbians?

Unknown বলেছেন...

Incredibly cliche and boring...yet another 'news' story about gays and gay life....does anyone really not know or care anymore except out-of-tune editors? Gay life is NOT news anymore, it has become mainstream falderol. Time to move on....

Palladian বলেছেন...

Gay life is NOT news anymore

If that's true, then "straight" life is DEFINITELY NOT news anymore.

I don't think about "gay" life or "straight" life. I just think about life. Life is almost always interesting.

Nomennovum বলেছেন...

I always thought lesbians made gays mad.

Known Unknown বলেছেন...

You should see them color-coordinate with camo.

Palladian বলেছেন...

You should also see black people eat watermelon and Jews count money.

Amartel বলেছেন...

Adding "community" to a group renders that group aggrieved automatically. The Gaybros are insufficiently aggrieved and therefore not of the community.

Synova বলেছেন...

"If that's true, then "straight" life is DEFINITELY NOT news anymore."

Ace of Spades HQ blog has meetups here or there in different cities and I'm pretty sure that it's not news.

Synova বলেছেন...

Actually, I thought that the article was interesting in a nice interesting human-interest sort of way.

Sounds like some guys had a nice time meeting IRL.

George M. Spencer বলেছেন...

When Slate started Bill Gates turned to Michael Kinsley.

It was launched as a high-end think publication.

It even had a print edition.

Now it is a parade of mostly bizarre articles whose headlines are even more bizarre. It's all designed to capture traffic.

The way you do these stories is put a group of underpaid, eager 20something "editors" in a room to brainstorm. They toss off zany ideas. Then you find a writer, another underpaid 20something, to cobble together two or three sources. Suddenly, it's a national trend!

The Cracker Emcee Refulgent বলেছেন...

As the buck moved out of the trees Andy D. raised his Remington 760, jacked a shell in the chamber and fired. That buck went down like it struck by lightning. Andy D. Is an airline pilot now but he's still gay and he still hunts.

A real life Gaybro story, I guess. I didn't know Andy D. was gay back then because he acted exactly like any regular dude in the valley. Still does.

Titus বলেছেন...

GayBros sound kind of fake to me.

They are quoted in this article as living in the South End of Boston going to fag bars as well as living in New Orleans.

They should be living in Brokeback country and Alaska and Mississipi-which would be much more interesting and "manly".

The South End and New Orleans are not what I would call "manly".

tits.

Known Unknown বলেছেন...

You should also see black people eat watermelon and Jews count money.

Ha! I fooled you! NO ONE CAN COLOR-COORDINATE WITH CAMO!

Luke Lea বলেছেন...

From the article, a criticism of Gaybros by another homosexual: "Many also seem to have more straight male friends than gay ones, no doubt for a variety of reasons." What does this remark say about the prospects of gay men integrating into the mainstream of society? Are we going to have gay cliques in the army? Among Congressmen in D.C.? In corporate hierarchies? What are the implications? I don't think you can assume it will be good for society.

Palladian বলেছেন...

What does this remark say about the prospects of gay men integrating into the mainstream of society?

A remark by a single "homosexual" says nothing about the prospects of anything, other than the prospect that he wants to see his comment in print. Just like a blog comment by a single heterosexual whining about nefarious "gay cliques" says nothing about heterosexuals in general.

Some of you seriously need to get out more.

Sofa King বলেছেন...

A remark by a single "homosexual" says nothing about the prospects of anything, other than the prospect that he wants to see his comment in print.

But one gets national media attention and one does not. That is, I think, significant in itself.

Can a Bear be a Gaybro?

Alex বলেছেন...

Nothing new, remember "bears"?

Rusty বলেছেন...

"Gay community"

Is that a gated community or more like a ghetto?

Stop the presses!

Roger J. বলেছেন...

Palladian, as usual, speaks common sense--to characterize any one as a community denigrates the individual as a person. Well, as usual, Palladian. We will all better off when start thinking of individuals rather than as a member of a "community."

Roger J. বলেছেন...

Pardon: in my post above: well "said" Palladian as usual.

Rusty বলেছেন...

I knew Orvis existed for some reason.

Shanna বলেছেন...

I don't think about "gay" life or "straight" life. I just think about life. Life is almost always interesting.

Indeed. There are lots of people who like sports, hunting and beer. If you grow up with something and you enjoy it you aren't going to abandon it just because somebody thinks you should.

MEET THE GAYBROS!

If they could find a gay Duck Dynasty third cousin or something they would have a goldmine on their hand.

OK, so now it is not cool for gay guys to act like guys?

Sounds like the gay community is full of self loathing wannabes.

Except for these brahs.

RonF বলেছেন...

I've been to a gay sports bar in Chicago a few times. The guys in there like to watch sports and drink beer. And, if you think about it, there's nothing odd with going into a sports bar and seeing pretty much all guys in there.

Of course, when someone arrives in your average sports bar and walks up to a group, the other guys there generally don't hug and kiss him....
