"The best in business is on 'Argo' right now. She’s like Rahm Emanuel."

A non-random sentence from an article with the first sentence: "Political movies are expected to rake in the trophies at Sunday night’s Academy Awards ceremony."

So... "political movies" is supposed to refer to movies with political subject matter, but they win awards because people wage a political campaign for the award.

Too much politics! Remember when it seemed like movies were counterculture or art or something like that?

The "she" in the quote in this post's title is Sasha Stone, who's quoted predicting the award winners this year won't appropriate the occasion and make political remarks: "You don’t want to turn off half of America by making jokes about Republicans."

"You don’t want to turn off half of America by making jokes about Republicans."

Since when has that been a moment's consideration for the Hollywood crowd?

You don’t want to turn off half of America by making jokes about Republicans.

Seems to me humorists used to make jokes about those in power, particularly the president, back when they were funny. The poltical power was the consolation to the half of the audience that might be offended as supporters of the target of the humor's bite.

It's as though Stone cannot even conceived of the possibility that humor could be aimed at Obama or the Democrats, however.

At this point who gives a shit whether or not they rag on Republicans? We all know what they think without them saying it. We see it in their movies and tv shows every day. Drug-addled starlets fresh out of rehab, blowdried wussy men who don't go a day without a mani-pedi, closeted racist shitbag Liberal icons like Alec Baldwin, they are the core of the Democrat Party West. The more that crew of gibbering tools rags on Republicans, the better we look.

Oh...the Oscars are on tonight? Yawn.

Remember when people really wanted to know who won what?

Of course that was 50 years ago when they made movies people wanted to see.

Argo did its best to cloak the utter fecklessness of Jimmy Carter.

It was a good movie, however.

"You don’t want to turn off half of America by making jokes about Republicans."

That's funny.

And here I though these liberals were on the side of what is good, just, and benevolent, while Republicans were evil bigots.

Good to know they are so sensitive.

I just though Argo was overrated. I enjoyed it but Best Picture? That's a stretch IMO. For one thing it was marred by the conventional Just-In-Time escape mechanism.

I place it in the Silence of the Lambs category - good movie but far from Best Picture.

Did Django Unchained lead to Lincoln or vice versa?

I liked Argo but it definitely isn't best movie.

I would vote for Life of Pi or Lincoln.

Not half. Forty-seven percent. But what difference, at this point, does it make? They didn't build that. It was a reaction to a film on YouTube. The bitter-clingers will not react well to having their guns regulated by the death panels. But remember PawPaw had high cheek bones sitting there in that empty chair passing the bill so we can know what's in it. Of course, it's simply a tax, People get the government they deserve. But, always remember to speak truth to power.

I doubt many Republicans will be watching the show. They lost us years ago.

Don't worry, Republicans are not watching. They have to go to work on Monday.

Yeah, the conventions of raising the stakes dictates that writers invent tension-building scenarios like the ones in Argo. The runway BS was frankly quite hilarious.

I could see Silver Linings Playbook win in an upset. Other than Life of Pi, it was the best of the bunch I've seen.

The most appalling part of Argo was listening to Carter trumpet about getting the hostages out "without violence" at the end of the film.

It's as if Operation Eagle Claw never happened.

I thought that was a feature of the Oscars, not a bug.

I'm happy to report that I didn't go to a single movie this year.
That is something that has changed. I used to go to movies all the time.

Starve the beast.
Take a page out of their playbook and stream the movies from foreign sites for free.

You know, a jihadi who really wanted to strike terror into the infidel and the whore could do no better than staging a mass casualty event at the Oscars.

I liked Argo, saw it in the theater and escaped before Jimma Carter came on. I enjoyed it, but best picture it isn't.

Didn't the Oscars happen last month?

Then what was all that sudden and concerted blah-blah-blah about Django, Lincoln, Argo, etc. about?

@EMD Did you see Lincoln? What do you think?

ampersand বলেছেন...

Years ago I saw a tv movie about US embassy employees hiding out in the Canadian embassy. I thought it surprisingly good for a tv movie and noted that it was made in Canada. I haven't seen Argo and wonder if any of the movie was cribbed from the Canadian one.

The only reason anyone Is talking about ARGO is that 0 DARK THIRTY was blackballed by HUAC redux - McCain, Feinstein et al - and the always detestable Harvey Weinstein and fellow travelers like Asner. What a disgrace .

@EMD Did you see Lincoln? What do you think?

No. Not yet.

It seems mechanically-designed to win an Oscar, though.

I like Daniel Day-Lewis, and I'm sure he's good as usual, but the film seemed so dour and depressing from the previews.

ed waldo (Hart Williams) বলেছেন...

Uh, I thought you said you don't have time for movies and don't care about the Oscars?

So, now you DO? Seems kind of schiz to have two contradictory posts in one evening.
