I'm reading Sigrid Undset's biography of Catherine of Siena. I figured it'd be a bit of a slog but it's pretty great. Moves along at a good clip and does a nice job of bringing 14th century Siena to life.
A few months ago, I became disgusted at how out of shape I was. I've never been fat at all, but I hadn't been fit for quite awhile. So I started doing pushups, everyday. I didn't start out doing that many, in fact few enough that I kept it from my wife (who wouldn't laugh anyway). Anyway, over the course of a couple of months I was up to doing 60 per day (in 3 sets of twenty). Around that time, I was looking at some apps for the phone, one of which was something like "do thirty thousand pushups." WTF? I looked at it, and it included the not very remarkable proposition that if you did 100 per day for a year, you'd do 33,000 push ups. Even then, 100 seemed like a lot, but hey, I had time, and it seemed within reach.
Three weeks ago, I reached 100 in 5 sets of 20. Last week, I reduced it to 100 in 4 sets of 25. Within a few months, I want to get it to 2 sets of 50.
I have not missed a day of pushups since early October when I got really sick. I will do over 30,000 pushups this year. I don't think I've done that many in my entire life.
Zeus has very kind eyes, deep in knowledge and understanding in a universe we cannot fathom.
@Patrick - be careful. I did the 100 pushups things a few years ago (you work up to 100 consecutive pushups). I ended up with a case of tennis elbow that's dogged me ever since.
Thanks for the tip Farmer. Hopefully, I'm going slow enough that my arms can get used to it. Getting to 100 consecutive pushups will take awhile, so we'll see.
Donald Driver visits a fan
Our beautiful boy dog "Ari" shared all the love we could ever ask for...for us and for his partner "Dera." "Ari vom Hermann Haus" passed away, relatively sudden, Tuesday afternoon.
Dera used to tease him by dropping bits of kibble near him to instigate play...usually just in my office. Wednesday morning "Dera" left kibble 2 & 3 at time in every room in the house. She went around and picked all of them up Thursday afternoon. She will miss him, no doubt, and she knows now that he's not returning. Always in the past, when Ari was not at home either Judi or I was also gone...now she sees us both here and Ari gone. And she knows.
Thanks for the doggie "cafe" thread...I owed him a simple memorial.

Drove up the NJ Turnpike to the office in Jersey City today. The snow was coming down a bit, but there was almost no traffic going North. Now, at lunchtime, the snow has turned to rain.

How about a Blizzard thread? While Wisconsin may get large amounts of snowfall more frequently, New England has a storm like this maybe two or three times a decade. Also, a larger percentage of urban and surrounding suburb populations are pussies in general.

Today, as luck would have it, is "Opening Day" at Strat-O-Matic's Glen Head, NY, headquarters, where the newest version of the dice-and-cards/computer baseball game and the 2012 season rosters is being released to those who are coming in to pick up the game in person. (Those getting the game via online download will have it made available on Monday.) I guess they'll find out who the true "Strat-O-Matic fanatics" are, the ones willing to drive through a blizzard to pick up the game. And yes, their wives and girlfriends probably already thought they were a bit crazy. This will only confirm it.

My condolences on the loss of a beloved friend.
This guy showed up outisde my office the other day, and scared the crap out of everybody, but it turns out that he's just a big happy, friendly, 70lb puppy.
So now I have 5 Pit Bulls plus my own Lab/German Shepard mix. Living in 6 part harmony. I have no room for this guy though, and we need to find him a home this week or he has to go to a shelter until we figure something out. We blabbed him all over the internet already, so we are expecting to get lucky.
He's exactly what you would expect to get if you crossed a Pit with a Dalmatian.

Back in the States, dogs mostly don't run free and I'm seldom disturbed by barking dogs. Cats are the problem, killing songbirds and small mammals and spreading over 40 diseases, some very serious.
Here in Rio de Janeiro, dogs are a big problem. Folks keep them for security, but they bark up a storm every morning when neighbors head off to work. I have installed security lights and cameras, though a dog would be useful. Dogs are a prime example of negative externality inflicted upon one's neighbors.

Isn't the relationship we have with dogs an amazing thing? Two very different species who came together, not just once, but apparently numerous times around the globe to create this new alliance. We didn't really have to do it, but it was such a blessing to both, that it became universal and indispensable to the success of both of us.
Now we have both changed physically to both accommodate, and need each other. Both man and dog are at their very best when they are being good to the other and fulfilling the place their ancestor made for them in the alliance and the bond.
In the words of famous felon: "It's a good thing."

In Wisconsin, there would need to be 200,000 cases of that happening in order to "throw the election".
Much like there would need to be about 4,000 buses, fully loaded with passengers, driving up from Chicago in order for your claim (Obama stole Wisconsin because fake voters were bused in) to be true.
Or was it one bus that went to 3,000 different polling places on election day? You never are quite clear about what you're actually claiming.
Either way, I reckon we can expect the WI DoJ to announce they have made arrests in at least some of the over 200,000 fake/fraud votes that were cast in our state.
Unless, of course, the GOP is in on it as well...then it makes sense for them to turn a blind eye, eh?

Thank you all for the condolences regarding the real "Ari-dog". Perpetually joyful, he reflected his heritage, which was begun in West Germany for his dam and sire, and born in Madison (Fitchburg) in a litter by a very knowledgeable occasional breeder there. I will try to live up to the optimism he always expressed.

So last night the Lord told me to make a Valentine's Day card for humanity and I did. And the Lord appeared again and regarded the fruit of my labor and asked me, "How long that take?" and I go, "An hour." and he goes, "I knew that."
"And it's all well and good, but this is too hard for the people who it's for. You must make one that's easy for dummkopfs. Half this much will do. That's what I asked for" And I go, "I simplified it for dummkopfs! There's no thinking involved, just cutting out hearts, every schoolchild does that." And he goes, "We'll see."
So. Here you go. I couldn't find any dummkopfs, so you smart guys will have to do.
I don't know how to tell dummkopfs the paper should be red. Or if not how to paint them, or color them or dye them, or how to cut out hearts of their own, or what size, or how many. I don't know how to explain that. I don't know where to start nor where to end. Do I mention to them that card stock is sold like regular copy paper all over the place once you start noticing? So what do you think? Should continue and make a template and actually draw hearts all over a page? Do I actually make a template for a thing that's a rectangle with a few simple scores? Must I actually draw that and scan it?
I'm late to say so, but Aridog, I am sorry for your loss.
I hold out hope that the animals we live are given back to us in heaven. I will have quite a menagerie.

It's pretty self-explanatory. I like the dramatic twist/fling. I did it with hearts, cupids and arrows. No camera, but I'll try to get a photo when I get back to work on Monday.

That's why I like cats and independent dogs.
I have completed the task the Lord hath assignedeth me of creating the templates and instructions for a simple Valentine's Day pop-up card. So now I am released of my duty to humankind.
The templates are so simple it's embarrassing.
Nevertheless, here are some 30 or so photos that show a step by step process any child can follow. The 3 little files are png files to drag and drop. They fit an 8.5 X 11 sheet of card stock, to print, but you will not need the templates, just use the idea instead. They are put there for your human comfort.
And I tell you what, if you were to take a moment and fashion such a card for your sweetie, it will be the best card they ever receive and I'm not kidding. It will be treasured, I learned, and saved. Forever. When the person dies their survivors will go through their things, and go, "no wait, what? what? this person got Valentines cards like this when they were alive? That's awesome! Man, I wish I had friends who gave me cards like this.
And it's a simple one too. Part 2 Doubles the awesomeness of this card, and Part 3 intensifies that!

You'd only need three or four busses. Judging from what I've read on vote fraud every participant votes dozens of times. Or the corrupt democrats simply make the votes up.

Sometimes when I come home even now, 5 years later, and have a faint sweet expectation that our Good Dog will come out and greet me.
Damn ... that post at 6:56 AM 09 FEB is supposed to have a photograph of Garage's Labrador ... but it seems that Photobucket no longer likes me or Opera or the weather or something.
I guess the point was supposed to be that I pay more attention to the dogs here than a lot of what is said ... Althouse provides a unique forum, usually a "cafe" post, for dog folks to say nice things without the debate that usually occurs on straight up dog forums.

Despite taking an extra few weeks to pour over the petitions, Walker challenged zero of the signatures. Where do you get the info that over 220,000 were thrown out?
You'd only need three or four busses.
I've seen some big buses in my time, but never one that carries 5,000 passengers.
However, if what ya'll say is true (That the only reason Obama won WI is because fake voters were bused in from Chicago) then I reckon the Att'y General in WI will be issuing charges any day now...
...unless, of course, the GOP is in on it as well. Which, given the way Romney ran his campaign, wouldn't surprise me too much.

Dogs bless us for only short time here on Earth, and for good reason. If they lived nearly as long as we, their eventual loss would be too much for us to bear.
