Did the dogs jump any pheasant?

Meade म्हणाले...

No but they did jump a couple of flying ring-necked golden tennis balls.

Garage,

Funny avatar.

Who's Ruby?

This is getting like one of those Westerns where they intro'd a bunch of new characters at mid-season.

Irene म्हणाले...

Ruby?!

The downed golden tennis balls are called "marks". Neither dog was very good good at "honoring" the other's retrieves, unfortunately. Zeus managed to remain calm and quiet while Ruby worked but I'm afraid that was 99.9% due to being "all give out".

Meade म्हणाले...

Irene, Ruby is Zeus's new friend who he met today at the new Dane County Capital Springs Recreation Area.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Two pigs in a poke.

. . . and as you know, for Yellow Labs, "Ruby" is a family name.

Way to go, Zeus!

edutcher म्हणाले...

Are they dating or is this just social?

Meade म्हणाले...

Yes. Although, I'd have to say this Ruby was more Amber than Ruby - with a very fluid gait, soft mouth, and extremely affable disposition.

traditionalguy म्हणाले...

It's good to see that Zeus still loves me. That dog has a beautiful soul.

Irene म्हणाले...

Thanks, Meade.

I think we'll have to check out the small "Small Dog" area there.

Meade म्हणाले...

Social, Ed. Zeus is not even six years-old. Although he clearly "likes the girls" if you know what I mean.

edutcher म्हणाले...

It tells you something about the Althouse blog that, not only the proprietress and her inammorato like family, as are many of the commentariat, but so are the dogs.

Sherlock sends a hearty, "Ref, ref", to the kids.

Meade म्हणाले...

tradguy, every dog loves you. QED.

Irene, I predict P, B, and R would love it. The other R too.

Are dogs happy? Do they pursue it? Are they interchangeable with humans?

We kicked a few pheasant up out in Oregon last weekend. My friends dog flushed a strange little bird that I've never seen before. They said they thought it was a chukar, but I've never heard of chukar in Wisconsin. Maybe some get out of game farms, or escaped pets.

Wonder if you will hear this said anywhere else. I live in Clackamas County outside of cool Blue Portland Oregon, not far from the mall where a shooter randomly killed two, badly wounded a kid and killed himself.

Now that they identified the guy, you see he is a Hipster, by that I mean one of the Accepted, funny, friendly Tribe of twenty-somethings that haunt the late evenings of oh so Portlandia SE Hawthorne Blvd. Folks that worked with him at the trendy late-night sandwich stop, old girlfriends, et cetera wonder, what the heck?! Because he was so much like them, so funny and friendly.

I feel bad for a lot of things about this event, but right now I feel bad that everyone will try to avert their eyes that "He is one of us", and bury that truth so deep it will not be part of any review and course correction.

That is not to say that Hipsters all must have some course correction, but someone smart did say An unexamined life is not worth living, and it is a shame not to use every opportunity.

I think I may need to go park on Hawthorne and 'Hold the High Watch' for all the dear young folk around there, that they pause and go deeper, find their anchor and experience true discernment. . . . and live their lives in Perfect Peace. Impossible prayer, OK, but there it is anyway. (Amen.)

Meade म्हणाले...

Ricpic, I don't think "happy" really applies to dogs the way it does to humans. "Joyful" does. Sadly enough, "miserable" too often can also apply. "Sleeping peacefully" frequently applies. And so does "sleeping joyfully".

Meade म्हणाले...

Amen and God's peace, cf.

Weird that you should mention chukar, because I had literally never heard of them until this morning. I was looking out the kitchen window, pre-dawn, and there was something that I at first thought was a scrub jay, hopping from limb to limb on one of our two huge moss-covered oaks. Then it got closer and it obviously wasn't a jay; it had an orange breast. Closer still, and you could see the hooked beak and the rather severe gray cap. Sharp-shinned hawk, I think. I just didn't think to see a hawk hopping around the lower limbs of a moss-covered oak at 7:30 a.m.

Anyway, it was when I was trying to find this critter in Sibley that I ran across chukar.

Just an observation... I'm not asking for help.. or as some in the blog would put it.. I'm not whining.

For some time now, I've noticed that when I go back to the main page, from the comments page, it takes quite a bit of time for the blog to reload... so much so that I timed it... it took over 10 seconds. While coming from the main page to the comments is virtually instantaneous.

10 seconds may not sound like much but to constant users like myself... they add up.

I supposed it could be that my computer is infected... but I was wondering if that was happening to any of you, less productive, garden variety users ;)

I guess this is not just an observation... but I've allready written it and I'm not going back and stating over.

Funny how coincidences like these come up sometimes.

And I don't have a Sibley guide. Do I need one?

Lem Vibe Bandit म्हणाले...

Having multi blog pages open helps mitigate the inconvenience a bit... but its still annoying.

Define "need." If you are interested in wild birds, it would be silly not to have one.

I demand that Zeus receive his own tag. Not a dog tag, but a blog tag. If garage mahal merits a tag then surely Zeus does too.

Chip Ahoy म्हणाले...

That looks like perfectly good wheat there just being wasted. Don't cranes and geese and such come flying in there to eat that stuff?

Chip Ahoy म्हणाले...

I thought labs have toys like dolls with real feathers that they get a real super charged kick out retrieving. That would be fun. Realistic toys. Complete with the sound of gunshots.

kentuckyliz म्हणाले...

You'd think hipsters would kill using a bow and arrows, rope, or their bare hands.

I channel surfed through Nature last night. A mama leopard with her two four month old cubs. The baboons were moving into the area, a ravine and stream. Mama climbs/jumps up and beckons the cubs to follow. One makes it up...the other can't make it up the steep wall of earth. I'm yelling at the tv NOOOOOOOO and have to change the channel. I can't watch the baboons kill and tear apart the leopard cub. It's just a widdle baby. Nature's a bitch.

kentuckyliz म्हणाले...

I survived my first deposition. Had to wait...so I started singing I'll Be Home for Christmas and worked on my Christmas to-do list. Take that, bitches.

Meade should start a dog-related small business in the age of Obama.

We used to hunt them as bonus birds in, of all places, the UP.
