"This is a fucked-up country to grow up in, especially as a girl."

"And we all want to give young women the tools necessary to succeed. So let’s teach girls to survive a misogynist culture with a fist, not a smile."

Jessica Valenti, over at The Nation, is getting a bit exercised about plastic surgery (and a charity that pays for surgery to correct children's facial deformities, including some things that aren't that terrible, but that parents with enough money would probably get fixed to improve their kids' lives).

Allie: How many times must I repeat myself? This country, her greatness and her freedoms were advanced by BOTH men and women.

Still wrong. It was mostly men.

there are still men who feel women do not think for themselves, no not one teeny tiny bit misogynistic.

You keep playing the M card every time you are backed into a corner. Telling you how wrong you are doesn't mean we hate women.

But maybe we hate feminists. I know I do.

Meade said...Speaking of elective surgeries.

Its not elective surgery when you only have positions and not only mistake them for principles but vociferously insist that others do also. That makes it required surgery if you want to look in the mirror each am.

And there is the problem with the hard Left in a nutshell: they want to impose their self-loathing on the rest of us, and the worst of them are perfectly prepared to do so by violence.

Dante म्हणाले...

Allie.

It is simply as I see it. I could be wrong, naturally. Here is what I actually said:

A) you are acting out a character created by others, and if you were to understand the agenda, you might not agree with it.

B) I think you are better than that, and think you can think for yourself ("Frankly, I think you have more in you than your superficial display of self-righteous indignation.")

You insult: Amazing that there are still men who feel women do not think for themselves, no not one teeny tiny bit misogynistic.

Are you trying to make my point for me by regurgitating the pre-digested feminist talking points you have consumed?

Think, Allie. Here I am posting on a blog written by a woman who brings up thought provoking topics, whose debates on bloggingheads.tv I have enjoyed immensely for the thought and originality in them (while I don't always agree with Ann's positions, I do not discard any of them as thoughtless).

Or, on the other hand, I could simply take it that any criticism of your writing is an attack on "All Women," because your positions are the "Right Ones" that "All Women" should hold. Huh. That sounds like another one of those talking points.

Allie,

Pogo's point is just another side of the coin (best way to deal with Ken) stated in plain terms; I was simply using a bit of humor to hint that the continual back-and-forth between you two wasn't exactly something any of the rest of us were getting anything out of.

For the record: (1) I completely agree with Pogo as to the best course of action, (2) I have not the slightest suspicion that Ken would actually assault you if the two of you met IRL, and (3) no, no, no, I have not the slightest idea why Ken has this particular bug up his butt.

Kirk Parker म्हणाले...

Allie,

One more thing: I think you should think long and hard about Dante's final paragraph immediately above. Some of your stuff really does sound like you're translating things said to *you* as being attacks against Women(tm), and I don't think it's at all clear to the onlookers which party is engaging in the universalizing.

अनामित म्हणाले...

"Acting out a character created by others"..... Then you proceed to give me your "credentials" and I should be .... What? Are you truly so clueless?

My opinions are mine, no other woman needs to agree with me, nor any man. But if one believes in what one says, one will defend their position. Do you not realize you fault me for having one that doesn't make sense to you?

Perhaps it doesn't make sense to you because you are incapable of using reason and logic outside of your comfort zone.

Fen म्हणाले...

Wait, none of you White Knights are going to stroke Ken's feathers?

So, Allie gets caught up in a flame war about feminism, and despite what anyone else's motives may be, she doesn't let it go.

Then she has an emotional breakdown, and the men here rush to soothe her hurt feelings. Ken? No so much because he's a male and can take it.

Feminism. You've come a long way baby!

Fen म्हणाले...

Allie: My opinions are mine,

Not really. You've been brainwashed.

Fen म्हणाले...

Call him misogynistic again.

You know you want to.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Fen, emotional breakdown? You are funny, I can't even get angry with you. I think you may be harmless.

Strelnikov म्हणाले...

Yes, there is nothing like going through life with a facial deformity to toughen you up. Especially for a girl.

अनामित म्हणाले...

And you dumb dumbs who think I'm a feminist, clueless too. Feminists would reject me, I make a piss poor feminist, LMAO.

OK , I'm going to end my part in this fiasco by blowing all you sexy hunks of humanity a big kiss, oh and thank you kindly sweet sirs for all the favors, could you bring me some of that Godiva chocolate next time?

Fen म्हणाले...

So you're leaving the thread for what, the 3rd time now?

Lets just say you're hormonal and let this thread die.

Frank Zappa, of the band Mothers of Invention sang the line "What is the ugliest part of your body? Is it your face? Is it your feet? No. It's your mind."

Hey Jessica, guess what is the ugliest part of YOUR body?

Safety from religous and cultural danger is a norm for this country. We could be grateful to God, or to fate.

A norm because of choices made, directions chosen and values embraced by people since, oh, Roger Williams. People as active moral agents. Certainly luck at historical pivot points, but the real luck is in having been born here, or having one's parents bring one here.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Fen, it's a woman's prerogative to change her mind, aren't we lucky, don't you wish you were a woman?

Furious, did you miss my comment in which I said the exact same thing you just did? That the luck is having been born here? Then everyone proceeded to completely ignore that I made that statment?

अनामित म्हणाले...

And Fenny, I'm so postmenopausal, I couldn't possibly be LESS hormonal. :)

Fen म्हणाले...

See? I knew I could make you dance!

You should have listened to Dante when he said: you are acting out a character created by others, and if you were to understand the agenda, you might not agree with it...I think you are better than that, and think you can think for yourself

He's actually trying to get through to you and help you.

Me? Not so much. I'm still pissed at you for how you tried to appropriate your daughters navy service to bolster you own cred in a foreign policy discussion. That was really poor form.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Oy, vey. Fen, seriously, you are back to that ? Just when I was thinking , hey at least he's not as much of a dick as Ken...

Mad at me? LOL. How can you be mad at someone you don't know?

Fen म्हणाले...

If you claimed your Daughter's medals of valor as your own, I would be angry with you.

What you did was pretty much the same thing. You still haven't admitted it was wrong, you still haven't apologized.

Until then, yes, I will treat you accordingly.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Fen, kiss my ass, I do not know what the hell you are blabbering about. You are as weird as Ken.
