You look as if you've conquered Everest in the last one, Madame, but, yes, the West has a majesty and grandeur that's unbeatable.

Houston, the Althouse has landed.

You have no idea how frightened I was on this car ride. To get out of the car and find so much solid ground at the top of the mountain was such a thrill.

Looks like Akin is having a big effect on MO. The koch boys may have to dip into their inheritance from daddy again ...

This assumes Ras isn't ((( fudging ))) the #s trying to get Akin to drop out. Which btw, Ras won't have to do anymore since Akin says he definitely ain't quitting. :)

Oh what a tangled web Todd the rape case decider weaves ...

My wife and I just spent several days hiking and flyfishing in the Beartooths. There are nearly a thousand lakes in the region and incredible scenery. Glad you could make it out our way.

This is my favorite drive in the U.S. First time was in a 64 Chevy that really had to work to handle the altitude.

Charles Kuralt once described it as the most beautiful drive in America, too.

On the cusp of celebrating a great good thing here. Scary, in a lot of ways. Accepting great good gobs of responsibility, as always we have done. As always. But still! Still. Absent something unexpected and godawful (which things, of course, always can occur) we will be celebrating for real just a scant few days hence. And then rolling up our sleeves, and also stiffening up our sinews, as to imitate the action of tiger. Wheeee!

And. above all, feeling luck that we are grounded, first and foremost. in the luckiness sung about in this song.

I'm sorry but I thought that was an airline commercial.

rcommal म्हणाले...

Just a thought--and actuality--I felt moved to share. : ) ; )

Is the Beartooth more challenging than Granite Pass?

My wife almost threw up just coming out the east end of the park. I took a wrong turn trying to find the upper falls I think, and exited out of the park, we were met with a "Thanks for visiting Yellowstone". Fuck!

She said no way in hell she was going back up that stretch. I'm like, we have to, all our shit is back at the hotel and we have one more day to stay. I told she had to put a pillow over her face and suck it up, which she finally did. So we were laughing about that on the way home and chuckling about that huge mountain range ahead of us, [Granite Pass] that we surely wouldn't have to go over on our way home, RIGHT!? Haha.

I love blue in its purity.

Also, there are worse things that I could do.

Never been lucky enough to travel out west. What made is so scary? Like a roller coaster thing?

Looks like a awful lot of sky to keep track of.

And there's this other thing: I refuse to be played. I'd be happy to discuss and debate in good faith, which is a scarce thing.

(Also, i despise the default mode of "mock." That mode is more than despicable. It requires almost nothing from the reflexive mockers while at the same time elevating the notion that the targets of mockery deserve mocking precisely because there are folks out there who are mocking. What bullshit. So dishonest, not to mention both cynical and predatory.)

I mean: Yuck.

So if you had a mind to animate one of these, I hasten to ask before word verification returns, say, to insert Johnny 5 or Wall-e or r2d2 or Curiosity, or Schwarzenegger or the head-exploding bad guy 1, where would you start?

The solutions would wreck anything more than a few frames, like a rover poking it's head into the frame and then out. That would be kind of funny. Robot fingers appear at the edges cautiously as if testing a window and then the head pokes into view. Eyes blink. Disappears.

Beyond that, the backgrounds have too much detail to save as a stack of GIF transparencies. A lot of shared information but too much detail for GIF to handle effectively. So detail must be forfeited for a longer GIF to run, and that would wreck the picture one way or another, so I'd start by generating versions with less detail and picking one for the background which is repeated in every frame. It would diminish the picture and that's a shame.

@St. Louis Jim

I've not been to Yellowstone, but you need to go west at least once in your life. It's worth it.(go further than Denver. Those pantywaists stopped just when it got interesting)

And while the view live is spectacular, didn't we just have a dissertation about how big sweeping vistas didn't translate well to photographic media?

I mean, there wasn't even a cat acting like a dick in the picture.

That's what you and Meade need a cat. Dogs are like "Hey! It's great that you're back. I missed you! Where'd you go? Can I go next time..." yadda yadda yadda with their non-stop neediness for approval.

Cat's are like "Oh! Is this your best vase? OOPS! Not antmore it's not. Now FEED MEEE!" (Villains are always more interesting.)

I was just out there myself -- rode in over that highway and backpacked from just east of Cooke City to Alpine. Got to see the Perseids from 7800' on a flawlessly clear night. ¡Espectacular!

The little animal thinks a 1 point lead for Choom in MO is something to crow about.

If that's the extent of the damage, the Romster will be back on top when the new jobless figures come out, considering the poll was done before the Romster asked Akin to drop out.

I like the reports claiming the Red Sox are about to ship out most of their megabucks non-producing players.

Its about time.

I hasten to ask before word verification returns..

If word verification returns... I'm moving to Huffington.

Aridog म्हणाले...

Nice photo from the top of the Bear Tooth Highway ... but how did you miss the actual Bear Tooth in all that wide angle view? :-0

Lem Vibe Bandit म्हणाले...

Out of curiosity I went there.. to Huffington.. and I barely made it back.. yack.

I couldn't breathe, It felt claustrophobic.. whats it with the banner headlines everywhere?.. copying Drudge?.. only it wasant.. Drudge is like a clean sheet of paper in comparison.

I rather have word verification than to go to that place.

Tank म्हणाले...

Been on few roads like that. Always have to talk Mrs. Tank down at the end.

Great pics. The sky does go on forever in the West. Your camera does a pretty good job of capturing the 3D of it too. Mine ... not so much, but I never had a really good camera (or skill). Damn I love it out there. We went horseback riding for week at a ranch in Wyoming years ago - best vacation ever.

Issob Morocco म्हणाले...

The picture could only be topped if Chip Ahoy could have Ann and Meade rolling down hill from left to right!

Nice shot.

Curious George म्हणाले...

We made frequent trips out west for vacation when I was a kid. I remember taking a mountain pass (I think in Colorado) as a "shortcut" that turned out to be one lane at points, no guardrails. When encountering another vehicle, which we did, someone had to back up until there was room to pass. It was decided we would be the "back-up car". My dad got all out of the car and backed up, with our pop-up trailer. I remember my mom actually crying she was so frightened. Of course we kids were not helping by playfully walking to the edge of the huge falloff crying "we're going to fallllll". Poor mom.

Funny, now 45 years later I'm sorta afraid of heights.

"asked Akin to drop out."

Too funny. btw, Limbaugh said if he demanded TA to drop out, Akin would already be gone. Also amusing. Indeed, when mittens asks, Akin laughs!

Also hilarious and sad at the same time how old fart edutcher lives vicariously thru this blog. And would otherwise have nothin' to do and nowhere to go!

Happy trails to everyone except cellar dweller shut-in edutcher ...

Great! If you can do it, my husband can do it too, he is afraid of heights but lately doing very well -- climbed to the top of Eiffel tower recently without much hesitation. In fact, inspired by your pics in the last few days, I contemplated if we could hop on a plane and see it for ourselves during labor day weekend. It is too expensive and will have to wait for July next year.

The drop-offs on the Beartooth Highway and on the highway across Rocky Mountain National Park are the most terrifying things in the world. Or at least the most terrifying experience I've ever been through. On top of which I was tailgated by some A-hole who was pissed that I'd slowed to a sane 25 - 30 MPH on the turns. This went on for MILES until there was a turn-off. I shook my fist at him as he passed by and the look on his face was one of total surprise, "What, doesn't everyone fly across the Rockies at 60 MPH?!"

pm317 म्हणाले...

How about that! My alma mater UVA declines Obama campaign's request.

Akin defies the whole party. At his presser yesterday, when he asked his supporters to stand, there were only six of them.

The guy is seriously delusional.

Funny how the little animal is afraid to stay when he says something stupid.

Methinks he doth project too much.

shiloh म्हणाले...

Let the record show edutcher did not disagree w/the facts in my post.

The truth shall set you free! :D

edutcher म्हणाले...

As for rebuttal, I'm waiting for the many rebuttals he owes me.

With respect to his pathetic projections of my existence, my exploits with The Blonde, so often chronicled here, speak for themselves.

That the little animal's life is spent trying to find sufficient FUD to cover the fact the Romster is beating his Messiah's ass and waiting for someone to point out the fallacies and falsehoods of his own pathetic attempts at wit is testimony to his own pitiful existence.
