The women of the forties did amazing things with their hair and that was before hairspray, I think. I love that pinup picture of Betty Grable with her updo, wearing a bathing suit and showing off her gams.
Edutcher, the hairstyle is from the 40's , the copyright on the book may be from the fifties, doesn't mean those styles were from the fifties. In the fifties, the shorter cuts were in vogue, boy cuts, duck tails, bubble cuts. But of course you are the expert in all matters, women's hair styles, red leather, whips.....
I am sorry but as a man, even though those styles may be attractive, I would prefer my women friends spending less time grooming and more time with me (loving & companionship).
I know several women (no direct relations) who can spend hours "getting ready"
They wore hairstyles like that on the Original Star Trek, too. I always wondered how the women had their hair and nails done so elaborately when they were on that spaceship. I don't ever recall seeing a hairdresser on the crew.
The beehive. I haven't seen a real beehive hairdo in a log time, although a friend who is into the 50's styles will occasionally sport a low and demure beehive.

Darn iPad.
Wow. Makes me glad I don't have hair.
Can Chip Ahoy put Althouse's face on that drawing?
That's great! It's like a handle right on top there. Now just add a cup holder, and I'm in smitten.

Bobby pins.
Ah, yes, the late 50s.
They were....
unique.

From a book copyright, 1958

Why do you need hair when you have broccoli.
As it turns out, I'm not looking for a new hairstyle, but thanks for asking.
(Or should that be knot?)
I think The T-bow will replace this style any day now.
They paint their faces
They torture their hair
They walk around on stilts,
Then talk of liberation:
They're crazier than quilts.

1958 edition. Which indicates there were earlier editions. Now how hard was that to figure out?

I prefer the Bow-ie.
If I grow my mustache long enough I bet I can pull it off. (The look, not my mustache!)
Hey Jason, you're going all fu manchu on us. Don't know what I think of that. I'll have to mull it over and get back to you...or not.

I'm trying for Jose Marti, but will probably end up looking like one of those Anonymous masks.

fleetusa, sometimes people do spend lots of time getting ready, but the results can be glorious, so let's take the good with the bad.

Betty Draper wore a hair style a lot like that when she went with Don to Italy.
The arch, not quite a bow. Same idea.
Don't try this in Kent.
Sometimes you just "plop" a bow on top of the present.
This isn't one of those times.
The woman is, of course, the present.
And it's going to take quite some time to unravel this one.
Forties, fifties foreplay!
My daughter and I were looking at hairstyles on the internet recently and saw the bow on Paris Hilton:

Paris Hilton and bows?
Many beaus, perhaps, but more likely because the bow of her boat is totally outweighed by her stinking "aft".
Did that sound too stern?
Ha ha
Well that's just the kind of ship's captain I am.
A stylist did this for a little girl for her school photo - the school banned her from the class picture.

Aw, poor thing. She's adorable.
Penny, you're perilously close to making a good post.
The Cowardly Lion had that style.
