Remembering last Tuesday.

Oh, what pain there was when Scott Walker won his recall election. Here's a picture that's been floating around the internet of the reaction at the Tom Barrett headquarters:

Reminds me of this...

Well, yeah, but the Nazis' marching into Paris is substantially more worthy of tears and shocked expressions than a mediocre candidate's losing an election that never should have been held in the first place.

I guess the first pic shows yet another manifestation of overhype and hysteria from the left. We should be used to it by now.

Paulio म्हणाले...

Now you have just sunk to making fun of people you disagree with. So classy. But you fit right in with your republican friends.

I never noticed before that the woman was clapping in that famous photo.

I don't see anybody applauding in the Barrett HQ photo.

LOL. Nobody on the TOTAL RECALL side ever did that!

Why the long faces? The people at Barrett HQ (like the French) should be used to losing.

Don't go home disappointed, folks -- just go home.

Q: Why are French roads lined with trees?
A: So the Germans can march to Paris in the shade.

Palladian म्हणाले...

I'm interested in the drinks visible in the photograph. The woman in blue, to the left of the mummified body of Theresa Heinz Kerry wearing the starry scarf, is either half way through a Pilsner or a glass of domestic Chablis. The guy with the nascent jowls wearing the windbreaker and the red SCO shirt seems to be holding either a glass of Nestle Quik or a generous dose of Milk of Magnesia. And Nurse Ratched on the right is either having a teetotal evening with a glass of water or is finding her way towards the bottom of a glass of chilled vodka, neat.

Francisco D म्हणाले...

I will bet that very few, if any of those people know anyone who voted for Scott Walker (or admitted to it). They are shocked!

Lem Vibe Bandit म्हणाले...

Thanks Palladian.. that was a good laugh.

Quaestor म्हणाले...

This photo is really a still from a 16mm film clip which is usually seen today in the context of the German military parade down the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. However the actual context is matter of some debate. Nevertheless the image has become emblematic of defeat at the hands of tyranny.

Lately we have seen a lot of another weeping man, though this chap is weeping over the defeat of entrenched arbitrary power.

Professor Goatee is eschewing a beverage altogether opting, instead, to chew the skin off his fingertips.

Meanwhile, Buffalo Bill, whose ogling crazy-eye can be seen behind the mummy of Theresa Heinz Kerry, just came to the gathering because he heard that there would be a lot of fat women there and he's working on another "suit".

And the corned-beef colored bald guy to the right of Quik-of-Magnesia might just be coming over to him to discuss their mutual jowl progress.

I get more fascinated with WWII the more I see, read and learn of it. It seems so impossible: the degradation, the destruction, the scale, the extent, and the amazingly short time it took to go through all that, worldwide - 5 short years.

It seems so unlikely for modern people that it must have happened a thousand years ago. Just a single human lifetime ago. People lived it that are still with us - barely.

अनामित म्हणाले...

It certainly looks like a Red Sox cap, though the B seems to be in gold rather than white. Maybe it's a UW hat with the B standing for Bucky Badger.

Personally I've always found logo hats to be silly. I own one, it sports a Triumph logo, and I wear it only to vintage car shows. I can hardy take seriously the statement of anyone wearing a sports or organizational logo on their person. The fact that Cryin' Mikey wears a Boston-themed in Madison only decreases my scant respect for that walking tearduct.

Uh, yeah, if by "the occupying army" you mean won a democratic, free election, and then won a recall election against legislators and then won another recall against a democratically, freely elected Governor.

Because they are so similar, the winners of democratic, free elections, and an "occupying army."

So, taken national, what you're really saying is Obama and Democrats an occupying army of the nation.

Nice logic you have there. I appreciate its utility.

अनामित म्हणाले...

I was attempting levity. The Republicans won in a fair election, we need to move on.

Forward?

ही टिप्पणी लेखकाना हलविली आहे.
Tim म्हणाले...

The only similarity between the two pictures is that both show losers. But that's where the comparison ends.

The first, deservedly so and, if they were honest with themselves, entirely by choice. They picked a fight they weren't smart enough to recognize they could never win. Few people will remember these losers - those in the picture will probably deny even being there in five or ten years time.

The second picture mocks the first one; it is of true suffering and the triumph of evil of historic important, albeit the victims were not entirely innocent in their nation's defeat on the battlefields of northern France (it is a little known fact that on the day of France's surrender to Nazi Germany, it had more men under arms, more tanks, more artillery, more planes than did the conquering Nazis. France's defeat was as much about failure of will as it was being outmaneuvered in the defense of Paris).

I'm all in favor of mocking the losers of the recall; such selfish childishness should never be rewarded; the things they "fought" for are of slight consequence compared to the French losing their nation to the Nazis. Proponents of Wisconsin's recall deserve as much respect as they showed the results of the 2010 General Elections: none.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Furious,
Nether side has EVER been innocent, it's politics and it's dirty and people are getting sick of it.

furious_a म्हणाले...

@Allie: during the WI recall(s)? Really? I remember Bush=Hitler signs back when...see, I can play your game all night long.

So we must decide who are the occupiers and who are the resistance.

Occupiers = Civil Service lifers and Union Bosses defending the bankrupt status quo.
Resistance = Young governor with new ideas challenging the bankrupt status quo.

Actually, Liberators might be more appropriate for the latter, given what Gov. Walker has done for taxpayers.

I was attempting clarity. Actually, Republicans won in four fair elections, three of which were sore-loserman recalls by those who couldn't -- how you say -- "move on...forward!"

अनामित म्हणाले...

Well Baggy, I may really end up being tarred and feathered by my fellow Democrats, but I'm not voting for Obama. So yes forward.

furious_a म्हणाले...

...and people are getting sick of it.

Agreed -- Tom Barrett and his re-re-re-recall running mates just found out how much.

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

Allie, did you do something with your hair, makeup, something? You suddenly seem hotter, younger, smarter, wiser.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Why Bagoh, I'm blushing.

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

Wait till you pull that lever for an Repub. It will be like your first kiss. You'll be scared, afraid that it's forbidden, taboo. Then a feeling of liberation, of passing out of the nest into the real world as the air rushes back into your body. You will walk out 1 inch taller, and people will stare like they are seeing a movie star.

Of course I drink on election night, so maybe it won't be quite like that for you.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Gawd Bagoh, now you got me perspiring a bit, watch out you're going to get us deleted.

The Democrats first need to apologize for:
Chimpy McBusHitler I

Bush-Hitler
The Assassination of George Bush
Seals should kill Bush rather than Bin Ladin

Afterwards we can discuss the terms of their contrition regarding similar comparisons of Hitler to Scott Walker.

Until then I'll joyfully abuse any Democrat/Lefty who gives me the opportunity, especially when he's down, when I'll concentrate the blows on his kidneys. Ever since that walking shit-pile called Albert Gore, Jr. took the election to Federal court to try and steal it away from the clear winner I've known that the Age of Bipartisanship is over, and that the Democratic Party represents an enemy within. They need to stand barefoot in the snow like Henry IV before I'll relent.

Heh, bagoh20.

Just today, commenting elsewhere, I noted how pathetic, pitifully inept Obama seems lately. And I wondered if the reason many disappointed Obama voters still claim to "like" him is that they pity him-- and are staying in the relationship out of pity. So what's keeping many voters (especially women) from definitively dropping Obama, breaking up with him already and going with Romney is the equivalent of a pity fuck. They don't want to hurt Obama's feelings.

But when the only thing that's keeping a person in a relationship is pity (as opposed to sympathy), that relationship is in serious trouble. Because there's a fine line between pity and contempt. And contempt is a relationship killer. In love as in politics.

@yashu
That is a very profound insight. I do believe that people are no longer awed by Obama and are even feeling a bit embarrassed and sorry for him. In the way that you feel uncomfortable watching someone take a pratfall. You really want to laugh, but feel sorry for their awkwardness. If they keep running into the manhole, pretty soon you realize that they are not worthy of pity and are just stupid.

Petunia has nailed it. Over hype and hysteria. The crying guy...."OMG democracy is DEAD because we had an election and I lost!!! Life as we know it is over!!!" I believe the hysteria of the Occupy movement and the protesters in Wisconsin, turned off people who might otherwise have considered their points.

I didn't listen to NPR last Tuesday night but I did listen on the night of the 2000 presidential election and also the night of 9/11.

For the election - universal outrage that Florida might go for Bush and that polling places were cesspools of vote suppression and incompetence (no mention that they were mostly run by democrats).

For the terrorist attacks - shock, & grief mixed in with attempts to explain why the world hates us - outrage completely absent.
