That's over two square miles, BTW. I plant things for a living, and what he did is truly mind boggling -- planting 4 acres per month, every month, for thirty years.

Wow..
If that had been "translocation", it would have cost a fortune.

As George Peppard said to Henry Fonda, "A man ought to make his scratch on the land".

Good for him. He can look at it and know people will benefit from it long after he's gone.

Looks like an awesome site for a parking lot for a tree museum.

One wonders if he had a permit and if the seeds were of the appropriate indigenous variety and if the growth attracted native birds or the bad sort from Pakistan. He may or may not have worked alone but did he pay and tax himself and did he pay ever higher property taxes as the value of the land increased? Did he wear eye protection? Did he intefere with a desert ecosystem?

There is a lot more to this story than meets the eye. Had he lived in these parts he might have gotten an acre or so planted by now. But probably not.

Cool!

Now that guy deserves a Nobel prize.

Private money in the hands of private individuals can build a forest. Public money in the hands of bureaucrats can move a shrubbery. To the tune of 300,000 plus.

Great story and results.

"Had he been in any other country, he would have been made a hero."

Had he done this in the United States, he may have found himself running afoul of some government agency, headed by a career-minded busybody.

It could have happened that way.

What? There was NO UNION involvement? How did it get done without exploiting labor?

Did OSHA and the EPA approve the planting as safe and environmentally correct with the necessary permits?

If he did this on his own on public land here in the USA he would be arrested.
