"As we round the corner into Sunday night's low-hype, low-suspense Academy Awards..."

"... is there anything you're hoping to see on Sunday? Any viable surprises that would delight you? Any level of expectation for Billy Crystal's hosting?"

I don't think I have ever been less interested in the Academy Awards than I am this year.

Are you excited about the Oscars?

The only reason The Artist will win is because it's a film about making films. Take the same basic plot and make it about any other occupation and it would be seen as a gimmick. Ten year from now nobody will remember who won the best picture of 2012, but people will still be talking about Margin Call and The Driver.

Just let me know how it turned out.

I'm anxious to see Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen.

The men had better watch out for the Iron Lady. She has had 17 Oscar nominations but has only one win in 1983.

I look forward to a Streep show.

edutcher বলেছেন...

Last Oscars I watched was when The Duke got his award for "True Grit" (should have gotten one for "Red River", but...).

PS tg, they'll give it some Euro.

traditionalguy বলেছেন...

Thanks Edutcher...I hereby nominate you for a Lifetime Commenter Achievement award.

We can call it the Altie.

But keep your acceptance speech pithy.

Streep has won twice. In 1979 for Kramer vs. Kramer and then 1982 for Sophie's Choice.

Actually, I question whether her constant nomination at this point is rather in bad taste. Unless she's actually going to win. It only highlights the affirmative-action-type thinking of the Academy that awards people just because. Why not spread the wealth? After all, why does anyone need more than 2 Oscars in their house or to their name?

Thankfully, she's too full of grace not to show up and look lovely while somebody else gets the award...yet again.

Who's the person with the most nominations but has yet to win? I would like to know.

lessee....a bunch of overpaid, spoiled, entitled, pretentious jackasses get to spend a few hours fellating each other over how awesome they are.

they are the 1% of the 1%. but since they vote democrat they have a protest waiver.

Actually, I lied. But you'd have to pay me at least $50 per hour.

drink every time any person mic'd makes a strawman to mock a conservative position.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

I would watch it if you paid me. In fact, I'd live-blog it for $1,000.

Feel free to hit the PayPal button. No promises, unless you get it up to $1,000.

It's like 5 egg salad sandwiches, if you know what I mean.

If you haven't seen "The Artist" you should as it is a quality movie all around.

It is not really silent as there is plenty of good music, easy to lip read, good action and fun. The real stuff for films. No computer graphics either.

Oscar who?

Chip Ahoy বলেছেন...

There is a little movie you all must see. It is not up for any awards but that is okay because it doesn't want any.

It is called Lingüiça Instantânea! Porco Fresco!

It is a touching and heartwarming tale about a food demonstration table set up at a grocery store. Piglet goes into machine. Sausage comes out. Shoppers barf. Hilarity ensues. The little film is a triumph of human spirit while it brushes against and dances with important social issues of our day without being overbearing or preachy.

You can view the little film now for free if you like.

G Joubert বলেছেন...

I would watch if someone paid me, and I'd take something less than $50 an hour. It's negotiable.

First, I want to thank all the little people who made this possible...

PS You think I'm kidding, tg?

Remember Juliette Binoche?

victoria বলেছেন...

Obviously, William T, you haven't seen "The Artist" or you wouldn't be making those comments. Lovely, lovely film. Margin call was gripping and a superb first film but "the Driver" was boring, uber-violent and totally misused lovely Ryan Gosling.

Get some taste, William. Go out and see more movies.

When the list of 9 (9? really?) "Best Picture" nominees came out, and I realized I hadn't seen a single one of them, I lost all interest in the Oscars.

I can top that. Not only had I not seen any of those movies, I hadn't even heard of several of them. I lost interest in Hollywood productions a long time ago. As for the Oscars, it's only the biggest of the celebrity "aren't we awesome!" awards ceremony programs that I live without bothering to watch. Oscars, emmies, grammies, People's Choice, whatever. Don't want to waste my time watching any of them and couldn't possibly care less.

Yesterday, my wife and I did something we have not done in a long, long time. We actually went to see the movie "Act of Valor" starring genuine Navy SEALS. Now that's entertainment!

Lem the artificially intelligent বলেছেন...

I've only seen The Tree of Life (2011).

নামহীন বলেছেন...

I'm going to echo Fleet and Vicky, 'The Artist' is a joyful, unabashed, sloppy wet kiss to the art of movie-making. It's silent and black and white but is more eloquent and has more color than than anything else on the list. I can't imagine how this movie was pitched. It's worth the price to just listen to the score.

If I want to see a silent movie, I can watch a silent movie. I have Chaplin and Buster Keaton movies in my DVD collection. Why do I want to watch some French people acting up? It looks annoying.

Synova বলেছেন...

I'd watch it for less than $50, if by "watch it" you mean "sit in the room while the television is on."

David Blaska বলেছেন...

I'd watch it for Billy Crystal alone. Love the guy. Actually saw 7 of the 9 nominees for best movie. Can't understand why Descendants wasn't seen by more. Funny, sad, and George Clooney. Looking for the Sasha Baron Cohen sighting. And the dog in The Artist. For that matter, I really like Jean Dujardin.

I agree, next to Tim Allen and Bill Maher, he's the funniest guy in Hollywood.

I'll watch the opening just for Billy Crystal. Beyond that I have no interest in actors celebrating how wonderful they are.

If I want to see a silent movie, I can watch a silent movie.

Something I've wondered for a while -- if they can colorize black-and-white movies and dub foreign language movies, why doesn't someone put a voice track on some of those old silent films?

smitty1e বলেছেন...

Looking at the poll results, I can't understand why Americans aren't interested in a bunch of Godless, Commie swine on parade.
What happened to the old days, when Americans cheerfully enjoyed having their betters spit in their faces?

Craig বলেছেন...

Sky Cable showed Ghost Writer last night in Asia followed by Black Swan. Directed by Roman Polanski, Ghost Writer has Pierce Brosnan in a supporting role as a thinly veiled Tony Blair figure whose memoirs wreak havoc in the media world's black ops underpinnings. The film got nominations in seven major categories at last year's European Film Awards. And nary a mention at last year's Oscars when The King's Speech ran away with everything. Some say it's the best thriller since North By Northwest, head and shoulders above Matt Damon's Bourne flicks.

Joe Schmoe বলেছেন...

I saw Puss n Boots on DVD this weekend. That was pretty good. Up for any awards?

I thought Dujardin was horribly overexposed here after just getting an invitation to the Oscars.

First thing I heard this morning on both Inter and Info was about how the Americans got something right for a change. Asked the Frenchie to please turn off the radio.

Am trying for an all Francophone media moratorium right now.

The last Oscars I watched was when 3-6 Mafia won best song for It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp...I though the performance was meant as humor and was quite surprised to see them win.

First I was going to say I wouldn't watch the Oscars if you paid me, then I thought, yeah I would, if you paid me enough.
So I changed it to completely uninterested.
