"Newt Gingrich... cloaked himself in churlishness and accessorized with self-pity."

My favorite phrase from Robin Givhan's fashion report on the Iowa Caucuses.

I like the literary device that characterizes emotion and facial expression as clothing. I wish I could think of a lot of examples, but what springs to mind is "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile."

There's also "Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella." Somehow, I'm only thinking of old "smile" songs. Both of those examples put the singer in a position of advising somebody else to smile. Thanks a lot. It's not really too empathetic. You want a big, old phony smile on a man who's hurting? Hurting. Where is the song that acknowledges — maybe even celebrates — the display of churlishness and self-pity by presenting it as a fabulous cloak?

And can you picture such a cloak?

IN THE COMMENTS: MikeR quotes Psalms 109:18: "He wore cursing as his garment; it entered into his body like water, into his bones like oil."

AND: Here's the King James version:
As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment,
so let it come into his bowels like water,
and like oil into his bones.
Let it be unto him as the garment which covereth him,
and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually.

"Can't Live (If Living Is Without You)" comes to mind.

@Bob Of course, there are many songs that celebrate negative feelings, but I'm looking for lyrics that use the literary device: emotions are clothing.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

It doesn't need to be song lyrics.

I just thought of: "wearing your heart on your sleeve."

Not quite clothing, but ...

...Wipe off that gloomy mask of tragedy
It's not your style
You'll look so good that you'll be glad
You decided to smile.

She's a bad fashion writer who picks on conservatives, and you're the Peggy Noonan of blogging. When are you going to get that?

YOU VOTED FOR OBAMA.

Your credibility for judging candidates, and what occurs in politics, is shot.

The sooner you start writing like it, the sooner I'll stop reminding you of it:

YOU VOTED FOR OBAMA,...

Well, the Barenaked Ladies said "This name is the hairshirt I wear, and this hairshirt is woven from your brown hair."

I like that song, but it doesn't meet your challenge. A hairshirt is not a cloak of self-pity, and it's too itchy for every-day wear.

How about "Walking In My Shoes" by Depeche Mode?

Tim,

One of Gingrich's problems is, like Clinton, like Obama, it is always about him.

And one of the problems of the current electorate - and Ann is a classic example of this - is not knowing what qualities to judge a candidate on.

Who running has achieved more, politically, than Newt Gingrich for the American people?

I rest my case,...losers.

Churlish Newt and Socratic Rick could work a good cop/bad cop effort.

But their challenge is the Robin Hood clothing being worn by Obama and his merry re-distribution men.

But have no fear the GOP intends to run a moderate Mormon in a white shirt and tie and riding a bicycle.

She posts some pictures of Romney and his family. They look healthy, happy, and prosperous. Perhaps his sons could mate up with the Huntsmann daughters and breed a race of Mormon supermodels. The Gingrich children seem to be conspicuously absent from his campaign which may be a marker. The President is a father figure and part of a Presidential candidate's job is to look fatherly.....Still you can make too much out of it. Reagan was problematic as a parent, and Obama has that whole Cosby thing going for him.

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it's breaking
When there are clouds, in the sky, you'll get by
If you smile, through your fear and sorrow
Smile, and there'll be tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through
If you'll....
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear, may be ever so near,
That's the time, you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile,
If you'll just....
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear, may be ever so near,

Ok, that's fine, as far as it goes. Explain for us, please, how Gingrich is no longer the Speaker of House, especially in light of the absence of term limits, and how the issues that caused him to leave the Speakers' office do not matter?

I seem to be what I'm not, you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're still around

Oh-oh yes, I'm the Great Pretender

Oh-oh, yes I'm the great pretender
Pretending that I'm doing well
My need is such I pretend too much
I'm lonely but no one can tell
Oh-oh, yes I'm the great pretender
Adrift in a world of my own
I've played the game but to my real shame
You've left me to grieve all alone
Too real is this feeling of make-believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal
Yes, I'm the great pretender
Just laughin' and gay like a clown
I seem to be what I'm not, you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're still around
Too real is this feeling of make-believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal
Yes, I'm the great pretender
Just laughin' and gay like a clown

Lovin', touchin', squeezin' each other

You're tearing me apart
Every, every day
You're tearing me apart
Oh, what can I say
You're tearing me apart

It won't be long yeah, 'til you're alone
And your lover, oh he hasn't come home
'Cause he's lovin', oh he's touchin'
He's squeezin' another

He's tearing you apart
Oh every, every day
He's tearing you apart
Oh, girl what can you say
When he's lovin', touchin' another

Now it's your turn girl to cry

Give me a break. It is one thing to say, "These are the skills I had to draw on when I was Speaker..." and quite another to say, "I am a transformational figure."

If you were asked to interview the candidates being screened for a senior-level management position where you work, would you recommend that your employer hire a candidate who exhibited signs of egomania in the interview? If not, why would you consider giving an egomaniac the keys to the White House?

Get over yourself, Cracky. Wrap your little mind around the notion of the Lesser of Two Evils.

That is what is was with Obama and McCain.
Obama was the inexperienced one who might work out, though the odds were he would poke the pootch.

McCain though was the dismal choice. Guaranteed to fail on the economy, get us in new major Neocon Wars of Adventure, give us another 10 years in Iraq and Afghanistan. Close GITMO, Amnesty illegals, and with his usual bipartisan treachery - get so close to Nancy Pelosi and her agenda - that we would have a veto-proof Senate and Dems in total control of the House.

I wanted the Rep choice to be either Romney or Fred Thompson, the Dems give us Hillary. That didn't happen. So the choice was the Obama gamble or the war-thirsty dimbulb.

Oh, and Tim, a few more things:

Newt resigned the Speakership - he wasn't kicked out - and he did so one day after being re-elected to serve his state.

There were 85 ethics violations against Newt at the time of his resignation - but only one stuck.

And you still didn't answer MY question:

When we elect presidents to get things done - and this is a time when we desperately need one - who running has a better record of accomplishments when it comes to delivering for the American people?

As I keep reminding you guys, on thread after thread, this is not a Miss Congeniality contest or American Idol - it's an election for President of the United States.

McCain warned us the economy was going to fail specifically because of Fannie & Freddie - and we should change course - all the way back in 2006. And he got 19 Senators to sign a letter stating so, which the Democrats decided not bury.
