Taking the "you"...

... out of YouTube.

The War on Clutter has many battlefields.

Can't be surprised. The infrastructure needed to host and deliver all that content needs to be paid for. So of course YouTube will herd people in the direction that makes them more money. We've moved away from the idiosyncratic, really variable, really amateurish, yet really personal websites (anyone remember what the web was like back in the days when Mosaic was common, and the web was just another alternative to Gopher, Archie, BBS's, etc.?) to more polished, more centralized, more *managed* sites, with more of them being controled by the very same content providers mentioned in the linked story. Little wonder that spaces within the web would also move towards professional content providers.

Few people probably like that migration, but I don't see anyone denying that such moves were inevitable.

Chips, And those battlefields have killed many good soldiers and veterans of foreign wars. RIP: Trooper York, AllenS, RogerJ, Allie, Fred4pres, and many others. Dying in war is horrible, but when it's "friendly" fire, it's even more tragic.

Too much of You, just enough of Me.

Losing the single-celled intelligence was no loss, but you might want to tell them J has been deleted on occasion, which, IIRC, is what started this.

It was Googled, made more in line with Google video and Google goals, which is basically to make money. And hosting viral videos from unknowns is an inconsistent and unpredictable way of making money.

Which is totally fine and good.

The great thing about the web is that now that Youtube is Google, there is now space for someone to make a newtube, to fill in the space that GooTube leaves open.

ed, what actually "started this" was commenters who could not seem to not bite at J's bait.

The changes to a more commercial YouTube will have the same effect as the E Bay changes from a free form amateur auction format.

E Bay used to be like a giant on-line garage sale or junk shop jumble sale. The fun and danger of bidding against other people for odd treasures and collectible items has now morphed into a retail store environment. No more real bidding. Regimented sales consisting of more like a Dollar Store or big box retail environment with new mass produced types of merchandise.

The result? A new format Etsy.com where you can only sell old or vintage items or hand crafted items. The junky commercial stuff is not allowed.

YouTube refugees will create a new format to appeal to the demand and the free market will continue to do what it does.

YouTube's loss....our gain.

Not at all. What started it was the uneven handling of commenters by allowing the vile spewing of the "J" types to continue and the bitch slapping of other commenters who have generally been reasonable and who have produced insightful posts. ( I notice that "J" seems to have had a personality transplant lately)

I agree with edcutcher in the banning of the stupidity and juvenile postings of the entity known as Allie. The conversations descended into a sophomoric girls locker room atmosphere. Moronic diversions from the topics. Not why I began posting on Althouse or anything that I want to read. To each his own.

However, and this IS on topic, when the format changes and becomes unlikeable to the users...they will move on and either, like ETSY create their own format or find one more to their liking. All web sites, blogs or venues like E Bay or Youtube can not and should not be the same.

Que sera sera

DBQ, I don't know if you have kids, but picture them crossing their arms and saying, "You're not the boss of me."

And then picture Barney Fife putting his single bullet in his gun and shooting himself in the foot.

I've always found analogies helpful for me to understand issues.

DBQ, I don't know if you have kids, but picture them crossing their arms and saying, "You're not the boss of me."

OK Analogy.

I look at blogs as being a selection of restaurants. Frequenting the restaurant depends on my mood and the menu.

Some are like Chuck E Cheese, others like a country diner with great biscuits and gravy, and others like Delmonicos. When you go to one restaurant, like say...Delmonicos you don't want or expect a bunch of snot nosed kids running around the place screaming and bumping into your chair. The food and the atmosphere of the restaurant should be what you have known in the past and what you expect to experience. The management of the restaurant is responsible for keeping the tone, atmosphere and menu of the establishment consistant and palatable.

When I'm in the mood for pizza or begin to think that Delmonicos has gotten just too hoity toity....I can always go to Chuck E Cheese.

We don't want to eat the same thing every day or all day, do we?

Also....my child doesn't get a choice of what restaurant (home) to live in and YES!! "I am the boss of you, until you turn 18, get a job and move out."

ndspinelli বলেছেন...

DBQ, I agree w/ your restaurant analogy to a degree. But, whether it's a Chuck E Cheese or Delmonico's you expect to be treated w/ respect. The food and atmosphere is not the same, but the service should be. The food should be served timely, and hot.

Unless you ordered gazpacho....

I am deleting things like that that are in this post.

I believe this will open the door for another entrepreneur to provide a site more in line with the old Youtube, what without the content-driven model they are migrating to.

It doesn't necessarily matter about HOW it looks, if it sucks and doesn't interest people, they won't go. I still think TV should stay on TV and not be integrated into the web.

Dust Bunny Queen বলেছেন...

Exactly.

People don't generally like big incremental changes. Once you become comfortable with a style of blog, website or something like YouTube and it has more than just superficial changes, people will either accept or rebell and migrate elsewhere

Netflix is a prime example. HP tried to make a major sea change earlier this year, when it was going to abandon the PC market place, but backed off when their stock started to tank.

If there is enough desire for the product or website service, like YouTube or E Bay, the niche will eventually be filled......barring some sort of draconian interference from the government.
