"Thirteen Notable Traditions Found On UNESCO's List Of Intangible Cultural Heritage, In Order."

"7. The hopping procession of Echternach.../4. Kırkpınar oil wrestling festival/3. The scissors dance/2. Whistled language of the island of La Gomera..."

Via Adam at ALOTT5MA, who says "in truth the whole list is pretty neat" and:
The United States doesn't participate in the process of adding "intangible heritage practices and expressions" to the list, but it's not hard to think about what we might suggest — the blues and square dancing, perhaps?
Oh, let's not re-embed ourselves in American things so quickly. Check out that whole list and click through to some videos. I'm experiencing temporary immersion in the Pansori Epic Chant... just a happy consequence of a random click.

Here in america we've adapted the turkish oil wrestling cultural event and made it more progressive by including women, who now dominate the event.

Woodstock is great for this kind of shit.

The old hippies are always looking for some kind of weird, exotic art form.

On a typical Friday night, you might be able to catch the Eastern Botswana Asshole Flute Ensemble. Of course, the opening act would be some Joan Baez imitator singing about the suffering of illegal Mexican immigrants.

I love the blues, but if you go to a blues concert in the Hudson Valley, it's going to be a lefty sponsored event. You might get to hear a blues legend, like Pinetop Perkins, but you'll have to suffer through an opening act of some godforsaken feminist choral group bitching about gay marriage.

Absolutely classic. I get the jones every once and a while to pull up that video and watch it, usually when the A.D.D. is kicking in. When my oldest was 10 years old, I showed him that clip and laughed about it for days.

What about sorority queefing contests?

Square dancing isn't exclusively or originally American. Maybe break dancing qualifies. And the Rockettes.

Hip hop, of the 90's variety that is sadly now dead, is uniquely American, as is the most pit.

Flamenco? You're kidding me. Flamenco? What's so impressive about Flamenco? Ever see 500 people square dancing? A 1,000 people line dancing?

Ever want to slap the living hell out of them?

Now that's a cultural heritage!

The Mediterranean Diet? Isn't that based on what grows there? So. If I lived in an area that grew nothing but potatoes and based my diet on that this would be some sort of cultural heritage? Where are the Incas in all this?

All I have to say is that I'm severely disappointed I never went and invented the Peruvian Ass-Flute like I threatened to so many years ago.

The word "daffy" seems custom-made for this sort of occasion.
