The results are encouraging. Five years ago, 23% of children scored at or above "basic" on state tests; now 48% do. Before Katrina, 62% attended failing schools; less than a fifth do today. The gap between city kids and the rest of the state is narrowing....
By 2013, New Orleans plans to have the country's first "all charter" school system.
८ ऑक्टोबर, २०११
"In other cities, charter schools exist in spite of the system. Here they are the system."
Says John White, the superintendent of New Orleans public schools.

Any comment from the teacher's union?
I'm sure its racist in some way, seeing as how the Unions are not for charter schools.
Not really. Why can't charter school teachers or employees unionize if they want to? But unlike government schools they can't use the political process to to "bargain" (bully, dominate, control, utterly crush) with their employers.
Call Obama, time to shut these schools down. Too much success.
Surely this is mostly the result of demographic changes since hurricane - i.e., the least capable cohort moved out and hasn't come back because they can't afford to and they're on welfare somewhere else.
Time for a hurricane to hit the rest of that festering system.
Microsoft Windows has taught us all the cleansing power of the reboot.
Competition and accountability works!
Paul Vallas, the superintendent, who started this school reform in N.O., is about the only good, honest govt thing to ever come out of Chicago.
But, what about the Republican districts?
As for success, let's see how many get into the US Army - we know some will make it into Haavahd.
(no joke; the Army has become so selective that, if an applicant comes from a school known to produce sub-standard graduates, (s)he can only be accepted if (s)he does extremely well on the qualification tests)
maguro raises an interesting point. Can we compare demographics of NO before and after?
The union run public education system in the US is like the old Soviet Union. The end is coming faster and sooner than they know.
Kind of speaks in favor of this whole Global Warming thingy, doesn't it?
The teachers ought to be able to unionize. The teachers in New York's Catholic school system are unionized.
As for success, let's see how many get into the US Army - we know some will make it into Haavahd.
As for success, you got into neither, right?
Good for New Orleans for doing this. The education system needs some shaking up.
Most of the takers stayed in Houston.
And the unions are doing everything they can to stop it. Fortunately, that's turning out to be a whole lot of "not very much."
this is mostly the result of demographic changes
Of course, it is. Most of the bad students are gone with the wind.
