"Mr. Christie's aides say the governor hasn't budged from his months-long insistence that he won't enter the presidential fray..."

"... despite what one described as a 'relentless' stream of calls over the last week from prominent Republicans urging him to run."

ADDED: Nate Silver on Christie's politics:
The ideology of governors can sometimes be hard to measure because they do not take roll call votes, as members of Congress do. But a method devised by Adam Bonica, a political scientist at Stanford, would infer that Mr. Christie was quite moderate based on the political orientation of his campaign contributors....

Here's another, less abstract way to think about the question. What positions has Mr. Christie taken that could potentially give him problems with the conservative base — as Mr. Romney’s stance on health care and Mr. Perry’s on immigration have?

There are actually quite a few of these....

Because Christie would have little chance of winning. Perry is losing steam because he is too liberal for the base, so what makes you think a candidate who is even more to the left would be more attractive to conservatives?

I would enjoy seeing him in debates, but he is better staying in New Jersey.

Damn. I was looking forward to 14 months of fat jokes by garage.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

Why aren't they counting the relentless calls to stay in New Jersey, is my question.

He gets too many things wrong.

Not that he wouldn't be better than Obama.

We Republicans need to understand that "no" from Christie means Hell NO!!!

अनामित म्हणाले...

I don't blame him. He couldn't possibly be elected.

Scott M म्हणाले...

We'll see. He's supposed to speak in the StL area tomorrow.

Fred4Pres म्हणाले...

What I want to know is who are these "prominent Republicans" urging Christie to run.

And why are Ann Coulter and Laura Ingrham into chubby chasing Christie?

Hoosier Daddy म्हणाले...

SNL is probably salivating over the prospect if unlimited Jersey Shore parodies if he won.

John Goodman would have four years of steady work if Christie gets elected.

Yeah, what Fred said.

I'm with Mark Levin--what the hell is wrong with those two wimmin?

edutcher म्हणाले...

Christie has brains enough to know that 2 years as Governor of Jersey isn't enough to be POTUS.

Actually, I think it's because he's looked uncertain in the debates and hasn't defended his positions adequately (his position on immigration being the prime example) - the latter being a problem causing much frustration in said base after Bush, pere et fils.

Cain/Rubio 2012. Pass the popcorn and watch the minority blocs implode.

Hoosier Daddy म्हणाले...

Christies appeal is his fiscal conservatism which is driving voters. Were going down the economic shit tubes and the electorate knows it. The fringe base on both sides will scream about AGW, gays in the military, abortion etc, but the grownups in the room are concerned about the out if control spiral of debt and joblessness.

Rubio would probably draw a good amount of Hispanic support they aren't as monolithic in their voting. Cain will get the usual 5-7% of the black vote.

If Christie decides to jump in, he would make a huge splash!

Opus One Media म्हणाले...

good lord the guy's so fat no wonder he can't budge. cut him some slack.

You're right garage. He would indeed.

Hopefully Michelle will have left a nice bountiful garden so he can start eating healthier. At least I hope she will. I can't imagine she's had much time to tend it what with all those vacations.

Yo governor's so fat his cereal bowl comes with a lifeguard

Yo governor's so fat, on Halloween he says "Trick or Meatloaf!"

Yo governor's so fat, I had to take a train and two busses just to get to his GOOD side.

Yo governor's so fat, when he wore a yellow jacket downtown, everyone yelled, "Hey, Taxi."

Yo governor's so fat he had to get baptized at sea world.

Your governor is so fat, he climbed in the Grand Canyon and got stuck.

Yo governor's so fat the only time he sees 90210 is on the scale.

Yo governor's so fat, he's the reason they invented double doors.

Yo governor's so fat when he wore high heels he struck oil.

Yo governor's so fat he plugged the hole in the ozone layer.

Yo governor's so fat he ate the milky way.

What's funnier is Christie seems to be that type of Republican that liberals think we conservatives should embrace, he's moderate, believes in gun control, soft on illegal immigration, AGW follower but they still hate the man.

Social conservatives need to get over themselves. We've lost every social issues fight for the last 30 years. Stop letting the perfrect be the enemy of the good!

Would Romney parrot the Dems and attack Christie from the left, as he has with Perry? Would Romney pee his pants over Christie's union stance, as he has with Perry on Social Security?

Pragmatist म्हणाले...

If some republican would tell his reactionary, fascist base to go to hell and started talking like an intelligent, responsible adult then maybe some of us who are independent and looking my think about voting republican again. But so long as they pander to the intellecual dwarves of the far right and talk seriously to people like Michelle Hell, the Crazy Eyed Witch of the North, they are SOL. Lock the tards up, find some balls and appeal to the adults. The idiots have no other place to go.

Paul म्हणाले...

AGW is no "fringe" issue. It is a means to government control and rationing of energy, and the ramifications for the economy and personal liberty are enormous.

Belief in AGW has to be a disqualifier for a Republican presidential candidate. Period.

अनामित म्हणाले...

I think Paul Ryan is much more ready for prime time than Christie. He needs to accomplish some things in NJ and then move up to the national scene.

Maybe VP? But what good would he be then? GOP governors like him and Walker and Daniels need to show America what real economic recovery is.

Almost, but not quite, Pragmatist. Next time, you ought to consider throwing in "Christianist, "creationist" and "fetus-worshiper" to make your excuse for voting for the SCOAMF again palatable.

Fr Martin Fox म्हणाले...

The idea that the GOP would sail to victory if only it would drop any pretense of being pro-life and against so-called "gay marriage" is pretty ridiculous.

For one, there's precious little that the GOP has actually accomplished for its prolife voters; which translates into reason for pro-legal-abortion voters to still vote GOP and not worry too much, which is what has happened.

Two, there is a large number of folks whose only reason to vote GOP is that it seems at least plausibly prolife. If the GOP actually did what folks say would be obviously "smart," they would give all those folks no reason to vote GOP any more.

All this ignores the fact that the GOP won the 2010 election cycle pretty convincingly without following this advice, and has won presidential elections without doing so. And it would be laughable for someone to claim the 2008 election would have been McCain's if only he had been pro-legal abortion.

Finally, folks who say this know nothing about politics. Elections are won with what might be called unknowing coalitions. I.e., lots of folks who don't agree with each other, end up agreeing on a candidate who wins. A Republican wins when he not only appeals to the party loyalists, but also is credibly appealing to other single-issue folks who are needed to get a majority. Same in reverse for the Dems.

That's why, for example, President Obama has to do things to keep his single-issue folks happy, and the same with Dems in Congress.

Carol_Herman म्हणाले...

It's not "who is coming!"

It's what's already there!

Big problems in republican-land. They haven't come up with an appealing candidate.

You can't run on just hating obama!

Christie?

2 years worth of experience as a governor. HELLO! Look what people have done to Sarah Palin because she only has 2 years as a governor!

Then there are votes he's taken.

And, a selection to the State Court of New Jersey that would get him worked over real good!

What does an obama win mean? It means he'll select more Supreme Court judges.

The candidates who are appealing to the base, meanwhile, have missed their chances at being honest enough to grow some appeal.

No more than putting the feisty independent and unready female from Alaska on the ticket caused an implosion of dumb, festy, independent, and female voting blocks to break for Republicans.

Rule of politics 1: Blacks will vote for a black over any white candidate save when the black is a "Republican Tom" in the eyes of black Democrat plantation overseers.

Rule of politics 2: Hispanic is an artificial race invented by two Jewish lawyers at EEO in 1965. (The also invented the Pacific Islander category that excluded most Pacific Island nations, and magically ruled there were no Native Americans south of the Mexican Border).
Rubio is white and Cuban-American. THere is no race solidarity in hispanics because hispanics themselves classify themselves as something other than hispanic except when seeing racial preferences they can enjoy. Mestizo Mexican, white Mexican, Dominican with a little African blood. Black Panamanian ancestry.

Jim Lindgren म्हणाले...

I think a Christie/Rubio ticket is the only one that is more than 50% likely to beat Obama.

If Romney gets the nomination, the best VP would be Rubio. If Perry gets the nomination, the best VP would be Christie, followed by Rubio.
