It all started with "Everlasting Love" yesterday, which he's found endless versions of...
Dialogue:
"You should go into Pandora and make an "Everlasting Love" channel...""Midnight Confession," "Temptation Eyes," "Hitchin' a Ride," "Come and Get It," "Ferry 'Cross the Mersey," "I Know I'll Never Find Another You"...
"Okay."
Help!

No Doris Day?
Before you get to the hippy stuff ... You had Frank Sinatra. So you could, if you wanted to, fight back.
Tell Meade there's been music created since 1972.
Ouch.
Hey, for an antidote, play some George Harrison.
However, most of those songs are good pop songs.
Come and Get It, however, is annoying drivel.
I still have my dad's 45 of Build Me Up Buttercup.
Meade should put Give Me Just a Little More Time into his rotation, too.
Help! The album, the song, or a plea for mercy?
Have you considered a tranquilizer dart?
Oh god space hippies. You all want to change the galaxy but all you do is smoke G'neshfghn and smell bad.
Oh man, some Grass Roots . . . Meade has good taste.
Goofy pop music! Meade and I, Hoosiers that we are, are soul brothers.
At least he's not playing "Seasons in the Sun."
Yet.
Hey Ann, You and Meade need to look into Spotify. It has a huge choice of music, much larger than Pandora. less commercials and its Free.
We all recently switched in our household and love it.
Could be worse: he could be playing Leonard Nimoy's "Bilbo Baggins" song
Fear not. This is not a sign of Dementia.
Lots of people like old music and old movies.
We cling to our beloved music and movie stars because they were better.
Fear not. This is not a sign of Dementia.
I don't know. Pat Summit really likes Carl Carlton.
And you didn't know this about him? What happened to due diligence?
"ADDED: Confluence: The UW Marching Band is practicing. We've got the windows open. It's 68° and sunny and the sound, from 1 mile away, becomes part of the Meadehouse musicscape."
On, A Carousel Wisconsin
BTW, "Build me up Buttercup" is one of the greatest achievements of Western Civilization, right there with "Reach Out I'll Be There", "Brown Eyed Girl", and "Bus Stop"
About two weeks ago, Pandora started playing Obama commercials every 4th song or so. It was hell. I think they did it so I would sign up for their premium service. Almost worked.
Shouldn't Meade be out on the back forty doing whatever manly men do on the back forty?
Perhaps the Meadster would enjoy this one, by Bruno Mars:

Yer welcome!
OT: No charges against Prosser. http://www.jsonline.com/news/statepolitics/128389748.html
If people play songs that reflect their mood then isn't it a good think that most of the ones he plays are love songs?
"Midnight Confession" is the only song on that list that I can tolerate. I actually like it, a lot. The others, not so much. You have my sympathies, Ann.
Sounds like Meade & Althouse are practicing up in case they ever find themselves trapsing along, slowly descending thru the various circles of Hell once described by a certain author..
Can't quite figure out yet which level they're inoculating themselves against, tho...but sounds like a thoroughly brutal, almost unendurable experience..
There are a bunch of versions of "Hod rod Lincoln"
He should give that a go.
omg Seasons in the Sun.
How about:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qabsvs0Y-LI
Meade: You go, girl.
I eagerly await SixtyGrit's analysis of these musical choices.
How bout some Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds?

Soon it will be so noisy that you won't be able to hear anything.
*winks*
Hey Meade:
Here is an acid flashback for you, three hit songs sung by Tony Burrows (roughly 1970)Edison Lighthouse, White Plains and The Brotherhood of Man:
Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes
My Baby Loves Love
United We Stand
Enjoy, or not!!!!
Here's my favorite song from 1968:
Girl Watcher--The O'Kaysions
I may have posted this before, but threads like this one cry out for my contribution. For years I have compiled a playlist of what I consider the worst songs ever. This is an entirely subjective endeavor, yet I have found that most people agree with the appropriateness of including many of the selections. Of course, this is not a list of the actual worst songs, since those would be mostly forgettable. This is my list of the most diabolically, perfectly, cleverly terrible songs ever recorded. These are bad songs that haunt your dreams, that lurch at you at unexpected moments in unexpected places like undead zombies, and proceed to gnaw at your brain for hours and hours.
Some of these songs ended up on the list because of dime-store philosophical pretensions in the lyrics, some because of embarrassing, stomach-churning sexual innuendo, some because of hateful production choices, some because of dreadful vocal performances, some because of ham-fisted, two-bit political earnestness, and some for sheer, operatically-ambitious terribleness.
To paraphrase Douglas Adams, these songs "...attain a degree of ugliness that can only be the result of a special effort".

Great choices, Pall.
Palladian:
I have some minor quibbles, but yes, most of those stink.
All along Meade's watchtower, life harmonizes and sings love songs.
With my husband it is "Born to be Wild", "Saturday in the Park", "Sweet Caroline" and (of all things) "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley (not Patsy Cline- she would be infinitely better)
Should have never subscribed to I-Tunes.
Drives me bonkers. Oy, middle aged men and their bad music. I could write a book.
Vicki from Pasadena
Thanks deborah :)
Rob, quibbles are encouraged! I actually like some of those songs and think they're solid, but they're still diabolical.
Great songs can be diabolical as well. I have had a good song stuck in my head for days, and I have been driving people crazy singing it...
Eeeee-yaa-deeee-ut weeee-nd! Blowin' like a circlaround my skuuuuuu-ul! .... from the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capi-tuuuuuulll! ... Eeeee-yaa-deeee-ut weeee-nd!! ..
If he hadda pick an era, why pick 1970, when the music was so ghastly?
Anywhere from the late 50s to the middle 60s is better.
Of course, it could be worse.
He might want to hear Shatner's cover of "Mr Tambourine Man".
Tell Meade i said to add "It's the Sam Old Song" to that mix. If you prefer something hipper, the late Delroy Wilson has a great reggae cover.
Should say "same", not "sam". Although that is an interesting idea.
Palladian/
Wouldn't disagree with a SINGLE ONE
except for "Midnight at the Oasis." Yes, on one level I understand, but at certain times, settings, moods, it somehow can strike just the right pitch. Tho YMMV, lol.
OTOH, being 67 I can remember enough songs from the 50s growing up that it would take 6 days to log them all in. Try "This Old House" sung by Gisele Mackenzie, par example, just for starters..
I used to have to sit thru TV's "Hit Parade" with my parents weekly... I STILL shudder at the thought..
What is your life insurance situation? Prenuptial agreement? If you go insane does he stand to profit from it?
Well, I fess up to liking MacArthur Park.
Palladian:
Yeah, most of those are awful.
The only one I would scratch would be "Brandy" by the Looking Glass. It has a weird charm about it.
Oh, all right, I confess to Muskrat Love. As a teen, I thought it was idiotic, but over the last few years, I've come to appreciate its lyrical charm :)
Midnight at the Oasis
If you have doubts of the diabolical badness of Midnight at the Oasis, you should see the Catherine Ohara and Fred Willard version from Waiting for Guffman.
"Well, I fess up to liking MacArthur Park."
That was the song that spawned my list. Once, as a Christmas present for friends, I made a 4-CD set containing 71 different artists singing "MacArthur Park". Six hours of everybody from Howard Keel to Liza Minnelli to Waylon Jennings to The Ray Conniff Singers singing that inscrutable, interminable song, with CD sleeves that I designed and printed in letterpress.
"Oh, all right, I confess to Muskrat Love. As a teen, I thought it was idiotic, but over the last few years, I've come to appreciate its lyrical charm :)"
It's a song about RODENTS HAVING SEX! Come on! Not to mention the fart-like interlude played on an E-Mu modular synthesizer!
;)
If you really need a reason to hate "Muskrat Love" other than the song, watch this and despair!
Come on, Pall, they managed to rhyme missus and kisses!
BTW, you forgot one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ohr4P8E_io&feature=related
Just give him what he wants and he will sleep for the rest of the afternoon.
Palladin, you're totally missing the 'progressive' quality of Neil Diamond. For example:
"I am," I said
To no one there
An no one heard at all
Not even the chair"
'Chair' = "chairman" in old timey sexist language.
It's a fine line between quality pop music and bubblegum. (I almost typed 'poop music', which makes the same kind of point, I think.)
Which is why it's important to be able to appreciate both kinds of music. There's quite a lot of 'bad' music that's wonderful, and an awful lot of 'good' music that's extremely boring.
Your mileage may vary, but a point in every direction is the same as no point at all.
Toni Tenille has always given me a Carol Channing vibe, and it's particularly strong in the youtube palladian linked to.
And I would add to your list, Palladian: Wildflower as performed by Skylark and Thunder Island by Jay Ferguson.
MM, I had looked at this one right before Palladian posted his...I see what you mean about Channing, but I didn't realize she had such a lovely voice:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBYV_7a0FQs
I remember listening to the Captain and Tenille at the Smoke House in Burbank in the early 70's, '73 to be exact. I was a tourguide at Universal Studios that summer and we all would go over to see them on Saturday night. This was before all the fuss and all the acclaim. We all loved them and thought they would make it big. Same for Bette Midler, who performed at the Universal Ampitheater that summer. The tourguides would sit in the bushes (it was open air then) and listen to her in awe. She was amazing. She once came in the break room in a tourguide uniform (orange polyester) and shot the breeze with all of the tourguides. At the time there were about 50 of us and we all became fans. 38 years later, still love her and "The Captain".
Sue me.
Vicki from Pasadena
MM, agree about Wildflower, and would add Dancing Queen.
I nominate Ponponpon for the international version of the list.
And how could anyone compile a list of bad music and not include a song by "Sonny and Cher"?
Mary, Knock Three Times was the first or second 45 I ever bought...the other was Mr. Bojangles (and that does not belong on Pall's list!) Neither does Knock Three Times, for that matter :)
Right, rc, starting with Bang, Bang.
Gotcha, Mary, but I guess we'd have to include Tie a Yellow Ribbon?
(In Palladian's list.)
Depends on where you're tying it? So true:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wWz_7qdrPs
I prefer Slacker to Pandora. Pandora has far too many obscure artists to suit me.
@Palladian:
Great list of turn-off songs! Let me add "Don't Worry Be Happy" by Bobbie McFerrin.
It's a song about RODENTS HAVING SEX! Come on! Not to mention the fart-like interlude played on an E-Mu modular synthesizer!
Hey, they performed it at the White House for the Queen of England on her Bicentennial visit!
I got halfway through Pall's list and thought, he's got to include "Midnight at the Oasis."
"Young Girl" is almost radioactive nowadays, like the Nword on Rockwell's painting.
aww he was only playing love songs to tear at your heart strings. dont be so hard on him ;)
Dear Ann,
As someone who shared a bedroom with Meade for the first 16 years of his life, I can tell you that there are times when he just deserves to be pounded. As his big brother, it was my duty to inflict corporal punishment when it was needed.
Not that I'm recommending that you take that approach the musical abuse he is inflicting on you, but no jury would convict you!
Remember, school will be starting soon.
Best wishes,
Your ever-helpful brother-in-law
Michael Martin Murphy's "Wildfire" deserves attention on the awful song list.
Pall-
Only quibble is "Total Eclipse of the Heart". Otherwise, yeah, good list.
Jeez. What a collection. I somewhat liked most of those songs at some point when I was young, but now....yuck. Listening to all of them in succession should drive you crazy. It's a sign of your sanity that it does. I'm concerned about Meade, that he could be so cruel, or clueless.
Here's a song to drive Meade crazy with.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbOqkwDTq0I&feature=player_embedded
Please, do me the favor of adding "Fancy" by Reba MacIntyre, in the hopes that putting it on your list will make it stop playing in my mind. It's a symbolic attempt...but, worth a try.
When my wife was planning our wedding I jokingly said that I would slip the musicians "Musket Love" right before the wedding march. She asked me to sign my will now because she wanted my furniture. She said " Trust me, I will be a widow after the honeymoon!" I did it anyway. At the reception her Mom said thank God you're married, don't let a good man go to waste. Everyone thought it was hilarious including my Mom, the most staid women in the world. Mom then added that as the years go by don't forget you're never to old to be rabbits.
It was muskrats but I suppose breeding like rabbits will do...
Where's "Take a Letter, Maria"? (Note question mark outside quotes.) For some reason my older sisters (I have many of them) would always sing this in a fake German accent. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9Y0x1jLkLg
@Palladian Thanks! Great list... but... and everyone will have a but... I like "The Logical Song."
Just watched that "Muskrat Love" YouTube and Tennille reminds me of Michelle Obama!
"As someone who shared a bedroom with Meade for the first 16 years of his life, I can tell you that there are times when he just deserves to be pounded. As his big brother, it was my duty to inflict corporal punishment when it was needed."
So you've slept with my husband more than I have!
The truth is, Meade never annoys me. He's annoying but he has never annoyed me. I'm annoying too. I'm Ann-oying. It's quite liberating to have your mate basically authorizing you to go ahead and be yourself (ie, annoying). It works perfectly. As for any pounding... I don't talk about that here.
I tuned to an Eric Clapton channel on Pandora once and it took about a dozen songs before it played one without Eric Clapton in it. He's been in so many bands, and they all share the same characteristics.
Never happened with any other artist I tried.
As for Meade's list, it sounds like a serious contender for the worst pop music in history, even though I liked some of them.
jgm, I really like 'Take a Letter, Maria,' even after all these years. Maybe your sisters used a German accent because of Maria in 'The Sound of Music.'
Everything I need to know about how to prepare for the 8th grade boy/girl mixer by practicing slow dancing with my pillow at night in the dark I learned from the Elder.
I think the Badger band is on your wavelength. Did you hear what they are practicing?
UW marching band through the open windows, that sounds awesome.
'Take a Letter, Maria,'
In a German accent? Sure they weren't channeling Schwarzenegger?
Pall-
Only quibble is "Total Eclipse of the Heart". Otherwise, yeah, good list.
I'm sure we've all seen this.
HA, HA, HA!!!
You both are hilarious. Now, Shlaurence, go show your wife what you learned about dancing.
Ann, don't let him anywhere near your pillow.
"Temptation Eyes" is a great song! So is "I Know I'll Never Find Another You".
See? I'm diverse!
