ADDED: I should have called this the Levitating Muffin Café. (Lem: "Is it me, or does the muffin appear to float?" It's not just you!) This cafe, in case you are wondering, is in Leadville, Colorado. That's 10,000 feet above sea level, and I know high altitude affects baking, but who knew the stuff would come out this light.

I Had never been to Boston until I met my wife, who is from there. Cool city but I wouldn't want to live there. Everybody sounds like Mayor Quimby.

Sit down and hang out? The part of me that hangs out, after a few dozen chocolate chip items, is not what gets sat on. But it does obscure view of the belt buckle...
The best pancakes I've ever eaten were @ a small restaurant near Rocky Mountain National Park. They just had the most fluffy texture and I always wondered if it was the altitude.

I think the floating look is because there are no depth cues on the muffin. This is partly caused by a lack of hilights and shadows. If the muffin was partially lit from the side there would be a greater 3d appearence because of hilights and shadows.
(For example, the way you draw a sphere is to draw a circle and shade it from a bright spot, a glint, somewhere inside the circle and darkening outwards. Without the shading you don't have a sense of depth you just have a circle)
Also, a shadow of the muffin on the plate would show you exactly where the muffin is in contact.
Compact digital cameras have a very wide depth of field because the apertures are very small for a given f number. If you had a narrower focal plane with the muffin in focus and the foreground and background out of focus you would have some cues on the depth of the muffin, but that would be a very different picture.
I use a dslr and a compact - one reason is it gives me more choices for depth of field ... on a limited buget.
