"Where are the liberal civil rights leaders in response to the openly racist comments and calls for violence against America's black Supreme Court Justice?"

"These same men -- all men, I believe, as per usual with the black civil rights groups -- got all in a multi-week, if not many month, tizzy with their allegation that what obviously was a 'say it don't spray it' situation at a Tea Party rally was a spit attack on a black Member of Congress, but they evidently do not care when persons at an event affiliated with one of the nation's most established liberal groups, Common Cause, publicly say they want Clarence Thomas physically attacked and put into slavery."

Says Amy Ridenour, via Instapundit, who uses the word "hypocrisy." It's something beyond hypocrisy, though, I think.

In the eyes of liberals in general and the civil rights movement in particular, someone can only be authentically black if they march in lockstep with what the liberals want. That being the case, in their eyes Clarance Thomas isn't really black so they don't see the comments as racist, and they really don't care about violence against conservatives, either.

He calls Thomas dumb but I think he does so from a position of ignorance himself.

I'll be interested to see what racist commenters here, carrying the water for the lynchers, have to say. Will they have any idea why Thomas has been a bad Justice? Somehow I doubt it.

FWIW: Thomas' autobiography "My Grandfather's Son" is a great book.

I had good thoughts about Thomas before, I have even better thoughts about him after reading the book.

I don't have much of a life, and I recently watched a season of Weeds. The series revolves around the life of a suburban housewife who becomes a marijuana dealer. She becomes involved with a Mexican gang. The series presented every known variant of the Mexican stereotype. For balance, the series also presented the Minutemen, the volunteer border patrol. The Minutemen were depicted ignorant racists who thought of Mexicans in stereotypical terms. As the series demonstrated, it is okay to be bigoted, if you do it in a hip, informed way, but there is no room in America for the kind of cheap, white trash bigotry that is prevalent among the Minutemen. The left's prejudices are a form of idealism; the right's are despicable and unworthy of anyone who aspires to be a member of the human race.

PS: Except to add that, with a white wife, Thomas is an OBVIOUS "Oreo" and thus beyond the pale (no pun intended) so it's open-season as far as the left--both black AND white--is concerned.

Various black elected officials have beome involved in some pretty ripe scandals. However, the one scandal that that liberals find that is beyond the bounds of all decency is the pass that Thomas may or may not have made at Anita Hill. Judge Thomas serves his office honorably. The over the top criticism directed at him, especially when looked at in comparison with the muted criticism of such flagrant scumbags as Kwame Kilpatrick is extremely unfair.

"In the eyes of liberals in general and the civil rights movement in particular, someone can only be authentically black if they march in lockstep with what the liberals want."

This and William's comment about liberal prejudices being about idealism made me realize something.

Liberalism now, unlike in the distant past, is really all about the means. The ends, the goal, really isn't even important. Indeed, the goal becomes this unreachable realty that no matter the progress always demands more and more of the same means.

The sad thing is that people who genuinely want to see the goal achieved get seduced by people whose whole life and livelihood is invested in the means. So, they think that the liberal means is the only way to the end, then invest themselves in the means so much they begin to not care about the end. It's a recurring cycle.

All while the poor stay poor and ignored, with corruption and counter productive policies making sure there's never a need to lose the justification for the means.

The goal of seeing a black man in the Supreme Court isn't important because the end, the goal, isn't important anymore.

Dr. King had a dream. Nowadays, liberals have plans, and screw the dream if it gets in the way of the plans.

virgil xenophon म्हणाले...

William, you've hit on a pet peve of mine. Why is it that those on the left think they are the only "terminally hip" people on the planet? I'm convinced it's all part of their superiority complex. To admit of the possibility that those on the right can be just as "hip" and "au courrant" as themselves would put the right on their same intellectual, cultural and moral plane--which would surely signify the end of the known world. Funny thing, tho. In college when I was an undergrad mostly conservative fraternity & sorority types were most of the truly "cool" and "hip" (as well as intelligent--the "All-fraternity" men's grade-point avg at most schools is ALMOST ALWAYS higher than the"All-Men's " avg--and the spread would be even greater if one backed out fraternity men from the "all men's" avg., as they are obviously included) guys & gals--members of that most disparaged (by the left) group.( you know the charge: shallow, mindless, beer-swilling "frat boys")

And most college-educated corporate and professional people I know (outside of Hollywood types for whom mixed-race marriages are a social plus) who are in mixed-race marriages (in a civil society where it STILL can be a detriment to one's social standing and corporate advancement) are CONSERVATIVES--almost EXCLUSIVELY so. And consider Congress: Over the past 20yrs I can think of approx 10 mixed-race couples--ALL Republicans. I can't think of A SINGLE Democrat in Congress--EVER--who was married to a member of the opposite race. Democrats/the left (I'm talking mainly college-educated here) love minorities as "groups" to be courted for votes--not so much as individuals to marry and produce mixed-race children. So much for "liberalism"......

Maybe I am getting a little too conspiracy theory-oriented here, but since we were repeatedly told (by Ann, among others) during Tea Party rallies that the incidents of racism were liberal plants - here's what I would really like to know. Who is this person? And if their name can be found, what campaign contributions have they made in the last 10 years?

If in the 21st century, someone is racist - and not only racist, but they are being racist on CAMERA! - then they are clearly a few standard deviations away from the median of sanity or intelligence. And, as such, any group would be ashamed of considering them a part of it.

You guys like to demonize liberals, just as I am sure many liberals like to demonize tea partiers. And yet, as you point out, most tea partiers would shoo away the overt racists among them. Most liberals would also shoo away the overt racists among them. It is what decent people do.

If you learn to accept the basic decency of people on the opposite side of you, politically speaking, then debates like this will become passe because it will be obvious to all that racists and loons aren't welcome.

At that point, maybe everyone can start having an adult discussion instead of the "he started it, she started it/ but you do it too" juvenile debates that often occur.

Yeah, they should not have said that.

But here is the right wing dishonesty: you people are actually comparing random interviews of anonymous people egged on by the videographer to statements as bad and worse from LEADERS, and ELECTED LEADERS of the Republican Party?

I mean, it's really deeply idiotic to contend that intemperate remarks by some rank and file people on a street at a rally are the same thing as years of calls broadcast over the mass media for beatings, shootings, poisoning and various other calls for violence from prominent conservatives like Glenn Beck, Erick Erickson, Sean Hannity, Michelle Bachmann, etc, etc?

Or that it's a reflection on Common Cause. Do you even believe yourselves?

Oh, BTW, I'll bet those existing on a Fox News diet alone don't know that in the last month we saw two new cases of right wing political violence, fortunately nipped in the bud:

In Spokane, Washington, a bomb with remote detonator was found at the site of the MLK march by government workers. The march was rerouted and tragedy averted.

In Dearborn, MI, a 63-year old man was stopped on his way to blow up the Islamic Center of America. This act of attempted domestic terrorism against Muslims was, fortunately, foiled.

That paragon of moral virtue and "social justice", Al Sharpton, owes $3.7 million to the taxman - local, state and IRS. I guess if he can extort from "The [White] Man" in exchange for their compliance and silence, everything's peachy.

As far as I know, Thomas has not owed the IRS that much.

Because a rally theme was the Supreme Court's Citizens United campaign finance decision, Hartsock asked people about Justice Thomas.

Among the more outrageous and radical comments captured on video by Hartsock:

A man said Thomas should be impeached and "put... back in the fields." The same man also said Justice Samuel Alito "should go back to Sicily" and Fox News president Roger Ailes "should be strung up... kill the bastard!"

A woman suggested that punishment for Thomas should be to "cut off his toes one-by-one and feed them to him."

Another woman, speaking about Thomas, said, "I'm all about peace... but I would say torture" him.

Yet another woman threatened Thomas and his family, saying: "String him up... and his wife, too. Let's get rid of Ginny [Thomas]."

A man said the way to deal with Thomas is to "hang him."

A woman identifying herself as "Momma Donna" called herself Fox News host Glenn Beck's "worst nightmare" and issued a challenge to duel Beck, warning "I pack Glock" -- a handgun.

Along with the participants of the Common Cause conference, Hartsock said the rally was composed of people affiliated with Greenpeace, Code Pink, Progressive Democrats of America, organized labor groups and others.

Not to say there wasn't editing involved to make it seem worse, but the core was still quite damaging. Indeed, the whole Planned Parenthood issue recently shows that Breitbart was showing something that apparently wasn't limited to Acorn.

This isn't to say liberals are evil and conservatives are good. Just that liberals do come off seeming especially evil because when they are evil, they're often evil in the contexts of poverty and suffering, so they take advantage of those who can least afford it.

Show me ONE post where I have condoned the things said by the racist moron in the video.

In fact, pretty much every post I have made has questioned the "established narrative" in much the same way as you question the established narrative when Tea Partiers are accused of racism.

Is your claim that NOT ONE tea partier is racist? I am sure it isn't, because that would be absurd and a very difficult thing to prove. Similarly, there are racist liberals as well.

What does that mean? there are racists in all walks of society. It is unfortunate that tea partiers have to bear the burden of racism more - whether it is because of media generated narratives or because or "liberal plants" or because of the 1-2% of genuinely racist individuals. I believe that you are having a hard time reconciling differing opinions of different people, all of whom you'd like to lump together, for purposes of simplication and demonization - but that, despite that, you are inherently decent.

I don't believe you are responsible for anything that anyone else has done. In my eyes, you are responsible only for YOUR actions.

Ankur म्हणाले...

And you say, "No, my claim is that is that the left wing is riddled with racism of their own, demonstrated by the bile they direct towards black men and women who..."

Believe it or not, I agree. Racism and sexism aren't the preserve of any one group. Has there been any statistical analysis that demonstrates if a single group is more racist/sexist? I don't know how one would ever go about designing a controlled study like that.

I have a hard time believing traditional narratives about it, personally, because my experiences in this country have been so unexpected and surprising. I could go and and on with personal examples that were surprising, revealing, and MUCH more complex than any generalization could account for.

So, since I disbelieve traditional narratives regarding racism AND I don't have access to specific data among different groups, I don't have a basis for judgment.

...Ankur, FLS and Alpha...are beyond hypocrisy and beneath contempt.

You Sir are beyond hypocrisy,
You Sir are beneath contempt,
And with that said I must leave you
For your words Sir make me all verklempt.

@Ankur, nice try, but I know a non sequitor when I see one.

After a string of comments posted in the morning trying to push the meme that maybe they people on the videotape were plants or somehow fake -- an effort that went nowhere, which is about what it deserved -- you posted the following:

"If you learn to accept the basic decency of people on the opposite side of you, politically speaking, then debates like this will become passe because it will be obvious to all that racists and loons aren't welcome."

If you want me to believe that you're sincere, then how about you stop trying to be the shield the likes of garage, FLS, and Alpha, hide behind, and actively take a stand against them? And while you're at it, perhaps you could "acknowledge the basic decency" of conservative commentators? Then maybe we'd have a starting point for mutual comprehension. But until then, you're nothing but a tool.

And a dull tool at that.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

@ricpic, was that directed at me???

My seconds will call upon yours in the morning.

Ankur म्हणाले...

My entire last post was about acknowledging YOUR decency.

And I stand by that, despite your attempts to shake me off that conviction.

ricpic म्हणाले...

Big Mike,

It was just an attempt at silliness (he said, cowering in the corner). ;^)

Trooper York म्हणाले...

Ankur isn't such a bad guy.

I just wish his cousin Sanjay would fix my fucking computer and stop trying to tell me his name is Keith Austin when I call.

I mean what does he think all Americans are stupid or what?

ricpic म्हणाले...

Ankur's okay but my eyes tear and my nose runs from that curry he serves me. Enough with the heat already!

Big Mike म्हणाले...

My entire last post was about acknowledging YOUR decency.

By suggesting that you were surprised to find that "racism and sexism aren't the preserve of any one group?" That you "don't know how one would ever go about designing a controlled study" to determine whether liberals are more racist and sexist than conservatives? That you "have a hard time believing traditional narratives" about racism because your experiences in this country "have been so unexpected and surprising?"

I'm supposed to take all that as "acknowledging my fundamental decency?" All I see is that you are maybe starting to grow up. But you still don't criticize the hard core fecal-matter throwers on the thread, saving your criticism for me and Lincolntf.

You should regard me as a decent man who has passed his fed-up point. As far as I'm concerned, the onus is not on me to prove that Tea Partiers are not racist -- the onus is on you to prove that you're not simply slinging mud (and doing a poor job of it BTW).

Ankur म्हणाले...

My mistake. I meant the post before that one.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

@ricpic, I've been reading a lot of Georgette Heyer novels lately. Duels with swords and pistols are common in her books (c.f., "Friday's Child" or "The Devil's Cub.").

Besides, these days I present as large a target standing sideways as facing front.

:-(

Trooper York म्हणाले...

You shouldn't complain ricpic. You hebes are always serving all that salty shit.

I mean did you ever have to go to your friends shabbos dinner and have to choke down Grandma Gerties Gerfitile Fish and congealed potato latkas.

What am I talking about. Of course you have. Nevermind.

Trooper York म्हणाले...

The problem with Indian food is not so much the taste. Other food like Mexican and Thai can be really hot with lots of spices and curry.

It is the smell man. It could gag a maggot. Just sayn'

Trooper York म्हणाले...

The only thing that stinks worse than Indian food is that the Green Bay Packers are World Champions.

Did I tell you lately that the Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl?

I mean they still have to freeze their balls off in Wisconsin but that must count for something.

Don'tcha think?

Ankur म्हणाले...

And as for mud-slinging - I was doing exactly what you guys do when racists show up in Tea Party rallies. You don't like it when I assemble conspiracy theories to explain away racism in a liberal rally - and yet, have no trouble using that escape route when racism is pointed out in Tea Party rallies.

This, despite my every effort to bring out the ridiculous in the situation, by commenting on the guy's moustache, and hair, and glazed eyes and twitches.

It is very simple: If YOU are not racist, then it is NOT about you. All YOU or other tea partiers can do is shoo away the racists, make them unwelcome. And you are doing that already. That is all that you need to do. That is all that I need to do. The rest shall be taken care of by the marketplace of ideas.

Don't make ME shoulder the burden of your grievances of unfair media, or whatever else. Its not my job to set the world right for you, just as it is not my job to prove MY decency you by badmouthing people you disapprove of.

Trooper York म्हणाले...

That's right. Listen to Ankur. Don't shoulder him with all the blame like you are doing to all Green Bay fans when you have been dealing withOriginal Mike and Garage Mahal.

It just ain't right I tells ya!

Big Mike म्हणाले...

@Ankur, I missed that one.

Yes, America is a strange place for people who believe the New York Times.

I'm fed up with "feminists" who push the phrase "freedom to choose," but dump all over women who choose a path that the alleged pro-choice feminists don't want them to follow.

I'm fed up with people who scream "racism" but would cheerfully participate in a lynch mob as long as it was Clarence Thomas or one of the Steele twins dangling from a rope.

In fact, I'm fed up with people who scream "racism" but hold low expectations of black engineers and technical talent, because one shouldn't expect too much from men and women whose great-great-grandparents were slaves.

(I also have no patience with technical managers who won't give a female engineer a fair chance to prove herself, but that's for another thread.)

I used to have a colleague who proclaimed himself a "radical environmentalist." He didn't understand why I was accusing him of arson and attempted murder of mill workers. Then I caught him tossing aluminum cans into his trash can instead of walking less than a hundred feet to the recycling bin. Environmentalism meant to him that conservatives were supposed to recycle -- environmentalists just had to say the right things and post the right bumper stickers on their Volvos.

If your narrative is not fake, then you've come to the United States when people are standing up and saying that we're mad as Hell, and we won't take it anymore. Welcome.

Speaking of Hebe food, here's a great quote:

The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for 30 years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found.

But I have to admit....I love brisket. And bagels with cream cheese and lox. And egg creams. And potato knishes. And pastrami on rye with mustard. And corn beef. And of course matzo ball soup.

So have that on the menu when I come to visit dude.
