... has died, at the age of 89. I love her in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," and I'm choosing, for this tribute, the courtroom scene — in which she's impersonating Marilyn Monroe (for some elaborate reason). Her testimony includes physical evidence:

that's hawt.
Was that, erm, cowbell at 0:44?
More...erm...cowbell.
A very large girl.
I liked her for that very reason. Jane was no delicate flower.
Jane Russell was 'hot' before 'hot' was a description. Beautiful lady!
Just watched the video and did a Google image search. Wow, that's one hot biscuit.
Can we get 98 posts of Meade taking video of hot chicks dancing in courtrooms?
Instead of butt-ugly Democrat protesters?
Page views, dahling ... it's all about the page views.
Howard could pick 'em. So when was the cutoff date when "sex symbol" actresses were required to have serious singing and dancing chops? About 1965?

A few days ago, I tuned in to Encore Westerns, and there was this little black figure in the far distance walking towards the camera on a western highway, and I said, "What!? That is Jane Russell! What is she doing in a movie like this?"
It says something, I think, that I immediately recognized her just from the walk, though I have not seen a Jane Russell movie in ages, and this shot was so distant and indistinct that no features were visible.
Ah, that's lousy news. And she was so good in that movie.
Love the When love goes wrong scene in the Cafe too.
Vaaaa vaa vaa voom!
That's too bad.
I just watched the movie a week ago.
She was wonderful.
Geez, these Meade videos of Althouse are getting raunchy! The things lawprofs do to distract suit wearing protesters....
I liked her better in "Is there anyone here for Love?"
Notice how she pretends to find the obviously Gay Dancers "sexy".
Now that's acting.
I just watched this with my son. I commented to him that nowadays, an actress with her figure would be told to lose 30 pounds or wouldn't get any work. Quite a contrast with the stick thin actresses of today who look like underdeveloped girls rather than women. Jane Russell was a WOMAN!
Anne Hathaway alluded to those shimmies at the Oscars last night. Hips are beautiful.
Those of us who appreciate Full-Figured Gals are truly saddened.
She was great in "Son of Paleface" opposite Bob Hope and Roy Rogers.
PS A big Agree with Julie C
It isn't about fat or thin. You need the curves in the right places - which Jane did.
Big time.
Sad that she outlived her co-star in "Gentlemen prefer Blondes" by Almost 49 years.

You remember those Playtex cross your heart bra commercials too eh?

I'm hoping that Trooper does full-coverage on this one.
Err, make that "partial uncoverage"
Jane Russell was a WOMAN!
Well, there was Jane Russell, and then there was Jayne Mansfield.
Nowadays we have Christina Hendricks!
Great Jane Russell Movie is "His Kind Of Woman" with Robert Mitchum and Vincent Price. She exudes the feminine lure.
RIP.
Jane was a very savvy and wise woman. She and Bob Waterfield were high school sweethearts. Both were prima donnas (Bob was an NFL quarterback) , in a way, and eventually their marriage failed.
In England, a woman ran to her as she was boarding an airplane to leave and handed her a baby. The woman was the baby's mother and she asked Jane to take him to American for a better life.
Jane then spent the next 20 years organizing an adoption agency that worked internationally. She did fund raising and got it going.
She finally met a man who said the things that middle aged women want to hear. I attended their wedding, where I met Rudy Vallee, an interesting experience. Less than a year later, he died in her arms after a heart attack.
She took care of her family, including a bunch of brothers, and invested in real estate. she was a savvy investor and did well by everyone who knew her. She didn't have a lot of education but she could add and subtract and made the most of it. A lot of people will miss her.
And she was married for 24 years to an all star LA Rams quarterback Bob Waterfield and later started a foundation to provide assistance to adopted children. She had adopted three children, and was a recovering alcoholic.
She had 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Here's a quote:
“These days [2003] I’m a teetotal, mean-spirited, right-wing, narrow-minded, conservative Christian bigot, but not a racist,” she told an Australian newspaper, The Daily Mail, in 2003. Bigotry, she added, “just means you don’t have an open mind.”
You might have noticed my avatar.
Folks always ask, "Is that a Jack Russell?"
"No....it's a Jane Russell!!"
Most people chuckle, others are completely confused.
Sorry Michael. I was writing when you were and should have refreshed.
De-monstrative!
She had that hour glass figure with an intelligent smile that made her quite a challenge for men to try to catch her. The closest thing to her lately is Scarlett Johansson.
I read her obituary. She was responsible for freeing up the rules of overseas adoptions and allowing 40,000 children to be adopted....I don't know how distinguished her Hollywood career was, but if she had won twenty Oscars it would be secondary to her work in the adoption field.
She was a great woman and as earthy as they come but she knew bullshit when she saw it. My wedding reception was at her and Waterfield's home in Thousand Oaks. I and my wife were broke college students.
She told my wife not to let me get away 18 years later so I guess I have an extra attachment. She was a bit like Randolph Scott. He was a scratch handicap golfer and lived on the fairway of LA Country Club. The club had a policy of never accepting actors for membership. Scott offered to have a number of sworn affidavits that he was not an actor. They accepted him for membership.
Three obits on your blog today. What's the connection - eras ending?
Quite a contrast with the stick thin actresses of today...
Skinny can accept. Simpering, insipid not.
Love her long legs.
