Obama's post-election escape to Mumbai: "Obama’s contingent is huge. There are two jumbo jets coming along with Air Force One, which will be flanked by security jets."

"There will be 30 to 40 secret service agents, who will arrive before him. The President’s convoy has 45 cars, including the Lincoln Continental in which the President travels."

Can someone do a quick calculation of the carbon footprint? And please — everyone join in — explain why behavior like this shouldn't make global warming skeptics out of us all. If the emergency were really what it's claimed to be when we little people are urged to drive tin-can cars, no moral leader would travel this way. As it is, I can't understand why Obama and his group are willing to look like such hypocrites.
To ensure fool-proof security, the President’s team has booked the entire the Taj Mahal Hotel, including 570 rooms, all banquets and restaurants. Since his security contingent and staff will comprise a huge number, 125 rooms at Taj President have also been booked, apart from 80 to 90 rooms each in Grand Hyatt and The Oberoi hotels. The NCPA, where the President is expected to meet representatives from the business community, has also been entirely booked.
"Fool-proof" — "fool" is a fabulous euphemism, considering that the Taj Mahal Hotel was the scene of a horrific terrorist attack 2 years ago.

Garage,

Your spin is not helpful to Barack Obama. Nobody is carping that Barack Obama should row to India.

We're concerned that if there's really a global warming emergency, then why does our leader travel with so large an entourage that it requires 20 aircraft and 4 hotels to house them all?

Is there, or is there not, a global warming emergency?

After all, it is not necessary for Barack Obama to even go to India. Is he President of India? No, he is not. Has he heard of teleconferences? Yes, he has.

And so, in the face of a global warming emergency, we would expect a moral leader to lead by example.

The example of Barack Obama is waste and gluttony on everbody else's dime.

Those are hardly moral characteristics, wouldn't you agree?

Well...that explains a lot.

Obama has always believed that he was exempt from doing what others had to do. He never had to publish while he was "editor" of the HLR. He never had to show his college transcripts as Bush had to do (to be fair, Kerry never had to show them until after the '04 election, when it was discovered that the "brilliant" (because he had a D suffixed to his name) Kerry actually got D's to Bush's C's (and too, Gore's grades were worse than Bush's too, but he too got a pass on that.)

So, he didn't have to publish, he didn't have to show transcripts. He didn't have to actually supply a birth certificate. He did not have to answer difficult (or even easy) questions when he campaigned for president. The '08 elections solidified for Obama the truth that in his charmed life, he needn't endure what the rest of the world must.

So why should he join in the pretense about the environment? Why should he and his wife deny themselves anything?

We raised him this way. He's the monster of the left's own making.

If you ever get the chance, watch the NatGeo documentary about Air Force One. And of course, all this is completely inconsistent with the belief that global warming is an urgent, catastrophic threat. Don't think the Indians won't notice.

1. Agree with those that say POTUS should be able to travel wherever he wants.
2. I think the "security detail" has grown, however, into ridiculous proportions...not just for Presidents, but various Presidential spouses and Princesses and Princelings. Including when they get out of office.
At the height of the "Terrorists are Everywhere!!" biz, Tony Blair was vacationing in Egypt with two planes - a small VIP jet for him, greeted by a Brit security team flown in on one RAC jet, supplemented by Egyptian security.

3. The timing may backfire. Obama's handlers want him to look Presidential and thrill the world with being able to "preacher-speak" words written for him by others off a TelePrompter. But it will happen right after a disastrous election where Obama will be perceived internationally as quite weakened. And for an American audience that saw Bill Clinton in full damage control when he was repudiated in 1994 explaining to audiences that he "got it" and was moving to the Center. Even Bush, though too stubborn to change anything (and ignoring all issues other than Iraq and his "heroes" there and of course fighting for free trade and tax cuts and supply side) - admitted in 2006 that he and the Republicans "got thumped" and needed to make big changes (which, still consumed with Iraq and the "heroes" and the "noble Iraqis" he neglected to follow through on.

4. India itself is far too important to ignore. It may piss the Pakis off, but until Pakistan fixes it's cancerous ways, it does not deserve to be treated with the consideration the US gives to valuable "non-problem" overseas nations. The trick will be how do we stay friends with India while we stop Indian designs on 25 million American service sector, healthcare, middle management, and R&D jobs. We can't give away that store like we foolishly did with China and our industrial job sector.

5. Yes, the Indians will laugh at Obama if he talks about excess carbon use by Indians and lectures India about getting more of the exciting Green Jobs that India has had for 4,000 years abd are trying to move away from to achieve prosperity.
And laugh at his wife if she counsels them about overeating, the evils of Indian fast food...or more likely, lectures Americans on how superior and less planet-impactful the Indian cuisine is.

You don't get to just make sh*t up, garage. Bush caught heat for being a big government spender all the time. If he got an excuse for it, it was that he let the Congress have whatever it wanted so he'd get support for the war, which was hardly an excuse.

Also, I know that I've said for *decades* that Presidents should have the fundamental decency not to travel. I look at this and I'm not thinking money or carbon footprint so much as just how much individual people are going to have their lives inconvenienced... How many of those rooms will be empty for security? Will the displaced cleaning ladies get paid? Will the displaced bus boys and waiters get paid? How many people traveling to Mumbai will have trouble finding a hotel room? How many will be made late for work because traffic is held up?

That's not because it's OBAMA. I thought as much for Bush and Clinton and Bush and everyone else.

Make the world just *stop* for you, and excuse it how?

Bush was also known to travel light from time to time, BTW, to Afghanistan and Iraq, arriving without notice and zipping out again. No four whole hotels set aside for him.

Security is important, but does he really need to go? To India? Why?

OTOH, the global warming hypocrisy is just to sweet to gloss over. Why aren't you global warmers insisting that he stay home?

Obama’s reliance on the teleprompter is unusual--not only because he is famous for his oratory, but because no other president has used one so consistently and at so many events, large and small.

Cue the idiot cards...

"So you were similarly outraged with Bush's entourage? Shouldn't he have set a better example for smaller government and excessive taxpayer spending?

But once again it's nice to see conservatives expect so much more out of Obama and democrats than they do their own party."

I thought the size of the entourage was inversely proportional to the unemployment rate. What was the unemployment rate under Bush, again ?

Bush's annual deficit was Obama's monthly deficit.

Stuff like that is what we expect.

I'm no Obama supporter, but shall (partially) rise to defend something here ...

Count up all the people involved in the (needless and escapist) trip and they certainly do not fill the primary hotel.

There is definitely no need for *parts* of the second, third, and fourth hotels ...

So why is it being done this way? Anti-sniper pre-emption ...

The Secret service is being *paranoid* (sanely given which hotel Obama is going to be in and the previous attack there) and

1: blocked any other guest from the entire main hotel
2: (reasonable speculation) taken *every* room in the nearby hotels on the side facing the primary hotel.

Item-2 was probably reported as "reserving the rooms for the secret-service", which rationally-but-wrongly for misreported as for *more* SecServ agents, but it is just securing the nearby lines-of-sniper-fire.

And I agree with the main premise of the post, that so long as Obama schedules *unnecessary* high-CO2-trips, he is not to be taken seriously when he askes us to decarbonize the entire worldwide economy in favor of wind, solar or corn-power or somesuch.

(However, if he asked us to decarbonize (stop using mideast jihadi oil) in favor of Thorium nuclear reactors or Bussard Fusion reactors, then I'm totally in favor)

OBAMA AVOIDS BIBLE VERSES !

Here are some Bible verses that Pres. Obama avoids:
Proverbs 19:10 (NIV): "It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury - how much worse for a slave to rule over princes!"
Also Proverbs 30:22 (NIV) which says that the earth cannot bear up under "a servant who becomes king."
And Ecclesiastes 5:2-3 (KJV) advises: "let thy words be few...a fool's voice is known by multitude of words."
Although Obama is not descended from slaves, he may feel that he's destined to become a black-slavery avenger.
Or maybe an enslaver of all free citizens!
