Duckweed so thick you could write your name in it with pee. But only if nobody was looking.

is this a good place to live? whats behind the gate?

Jason (the commenter) म्हणाले...

El Pollo Real : But only if nobody was looking.

Or only a few people.

Jason (the commenter) म्हणाले...

Blaine: whats behind the gate?

My guess: the sun or a very bright light. Hence the shadows.

Perhaps this is from Althouse's neighborhood and she lives near an airport landing strip. Or maybe her neighbors have powerful flood lights. Either way, she really needs to clean her pool.

Thoughtful.

Today's AP Wire:

The U.S. Department of Defense said Wednesday that 36-year-old Staff Sgt. Matthew West was among five soldiers who died when insurgents attacked their unit with explosives in the Arghandab River Valley Monday. All five were based at Fort Carson, Colo. West was assigned to the 71st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group.

The Department of Defense lists West’s hometown as Conover in Vilas County [Wisconsin].

West’s sister, Kristine Willis, told the Traverse City Record-Eagle that her brother was a 1992 graduate of Gaylord High School in Michigan. She said West is survived by his wife and three children.

That's water you can walk on.

And drink with a fork!

David ...That is horrible news.Another IED blast wiped out another convoy through another valley. The stunned families will need to somehow keep their sanity and go on.

I dumped a 6 month old bucket of very dead minnows at the exact spot a few years back. Last year's ice fishing meets spring cleaning. I don't think that's why you walk across it now though.

Very evocative. The shadows grow, the light fades.

Late summer, indeed.

Althouse either took a ton of photos at this site once, or she comes back often. i think it's the latter, and pretty nondescript place to visit. Maybe it's the Buddhist temple?

Looks like a SWAMPMONSTER might be lurking in the shadows of that mucky pond. It's a very green mucky pond so it must be a liberal SWAMPMONSTER. Good thing you have Meade there to protect you, Professor.

Jason (the commenter) म्हणाले...

This is a political message from Althouse to the Democrats:

"Remember this? You were supposed to drain it!"

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

It's a bridge in Olbrich Gardens, where I take many of my flower pictures.

And it's an extremely nice place. Free, too.

If they put a little fountain there in the pond that would help clear the water.. or maybe just go straight to chemicals.

Clears it right up.

Althouse subtle attack against the MSM.. The blogs are the flowers and the MSM is the murky pond ;)

I love your photos, not only because I share your love of natural beauty, but also because I try to understand the perspective of the photographer.

This one gives the impression Althouse is standing in the middle of the "pond".

Great pic.

The shadows grow, the light fades.

Well, can't improve on that. But I can steal.

Shadows light crisscross,
Gut stirring melancholia --
Going, going, gone.

An imponderable.

Fred4Pres म्हणाले...

Lee said at the time that he experienced an ‘‘awakening” when he watched former Vice President Al Gore’s environmental documentary ‘‘An Inconvenient Truth.”

An inconvenient truth indeed.

jungatheart म्हणाले...

Yes, the pond growth is sturctural, but is it intentional? Is it yucky or lovely?

jungatheart म्हणाले...

It's a superb photograph.

Meade म्हणाले...

The duckweed at Olbrich is structural and intentional. Google "duckweed" to learn more about its high protein content, how it provides cover for aquatic life, and how it's being used in wastewater treatment facilities.

jungatheart म्हणाले...

Thx, Meade, will do.
