And when I say a nasty piece of work, I don't simply mean her opinions on Israel. She's been full-spectrum awful. I've known a few people who knew her 40 years ago, and she was slimy then too...
Also, let's just get the liberal bias thing out of the way. If there was a right-winger who'd spouted so much bile, hate, and ideological agenda-driven nonsense in the White House briefing room for half a century it would be . . . oh wait, no such person would have ever been allowed to become a Washington "institution" in the first place. ..
Suddenly, all of these people and groups are stunned to discover that Helen Thomas is . . . Helen Thomas. Feh.

garage mahal. His own petard. Some assembly required.
Good Grief, is this Althouse, or Little Green Footballs? The stench of hatred and smugness is overpowering. Guess, some people just don't like Pat Buchanan.
Can't really seem the similarity between a hard core leftist kook like Thomas and Pat. And except for the 2 percent of the time he talks about Israel - I like 'em. He's been fighting for conservatism for 40 years.
Should be "see" not "seem" - soryy.
I can't shut the fuck up already because I'm still trying to figure out what an "efficient demographic" is.
Sadly, Professor House probably won't be back to administer his class for me because I have another question about the numbers. Mainly how Faux Noise seems to have double the viewers MessNBC in the 24-52 category and triple the numbers in the 34-64 category, and how those numbers fare against his uncited 65+ numbers.
I eagerly await his expertise on the matter.
(I know this has fuckall to do with the point of the thread, but HDH is so goddamn smart I wanna get me some learnin')
Nice catch, AC245. :)

Shit, is the Professor into banning people? No wonder it got quiet and Alpha never came back from cutting the grass.
"Nice catch, AC245. :)"
Winning a 200+ count thread is no small accomplishment.
"Shit, is the Professor into banning people? No wonder it got quiet and Alpha never came back from cutting the grass."
Ah, you never asked what kind of grass that Alpha went cutting! He got so fucking zonked out on high-grade weed that he's currently passed out, lipstick smeared all over his face, wearing torn fishnet stockings, suspenders and a pink speedo, slumped on the floor in the back of a bus full of Mexican avocado-pickers and part-time mariachi musicians, heading toward Fallbrook, California.
First of all if the wall has reduced bombing victims to nil why the need for the blockade?
Let me type slowly. The wall stopped suicide bombers. It doesn't stop rockets and mortars.
How does the blockade help American interests in any way?
It doesn't it, helps Israeli interests.
I don't know any credible analysts that think the blockade was effective, or deterred Hamas in any way. On the contrary. That's the stupid counterproductive shit I was talking about.
Deterred them from what? Hamas declares its intent is the destruction of Israel even after Israel pulled out of Gaza and proceeded to rain down rockets and mortars on Israel. Hence the blockade. If trying to prevent Hamas from obtaining weapons is stupid and unproductive in your eyes well, that says a lot too.
Second the blockading an entire country is illegal under international law.
It is? Really? Was JFKs blockade of Cuba illegal?
For it it to be legal Israel must be at war. With who? Gaza?
Hamas runs Gaza. They ran Fatah out when Israel left and now run the show there. Blame them for acting like murderous assholes.
if their claim is they are at war with Gaza then Gaza has every right to fire rockets into Israel.
Oh Jesus Christ on a pogo stick. Seriously garage do you even fucking keep informed with the shit over there or did you just pick up a newspaper yesterday and formed this well thought out opinion? The blockade was in force because of the fucking rocket attacks! Jesus Christ even Joe Biden knows that much.
Sorry, but those are facts.
Maybe on planet Zongo. Tell ya what skippy, how about you try educating yourself on the topic and then get to the rest of the adult conversation.
I hold Israel to a little higher standard than fucking Hamas,
Really? Could have fooled me since I haven't heard a single condemnation from you of them on a single thread.
Heh...
I've been planning to weigh in and say that I, too, had garage pegged as a Jew-hating bilge rat, a long time ago. But you guys proved it beyond all reasonable doubt!
These Jew-haters, they're so fucking full of themselves and they lack insight into the poison afflicting their reasoning. They're malignant intellectual cancers, but they think they're being insightful and progressive.
@garage:
First of all if the wall has reduced bombing victims to nil why the need for the blockade?
Because, shit-for-brains, walls don't stop missiles. Blockades do. Ask JFK. A Democrat came up with the idea specifically to stop missile importation that way.
Second the blockading an entire country is illegal under international law.
No, it's not, shit-for-brains.
For it it to be legal Israel must be at war. With who? Gaza? if their claim is they are at war with Gaza then Gaza has every right to fire rockets into Israel.
Jew-hating fucktard. Hamas itself considers itself at war with Israel. If it wasn't, they would release Galid Shalit.
How does the blockade help American interests in any way?
It doesn't need to. It only has to help Israelis. It does. End of story.
I hold Israel to a little higher standard than fucking Hamas, aren't they supposed to be the shining beacon in the ME for the world to follow?
In the Middle East? They certainly are. And their first obligation is to protect their citizens from being killed and maimed by Hamas and their fellow terrorists.
You can't be a shining beacon if you let someone else snuff out your light.
Jew-hating paranoia snuffed out your light a long time ago, though. Jew-hater.
Hamas runs Gaza.

Not at all. Before the elections it was possible to pretend the average Palestinian was simply a pawn in the game between extremists and Israel.
The truth is the average Palestinian is an extremist, and it's now pretty obvious.

Blow me, Sybil, you inept and disingenuous douche.
Helen may be a "nasty piece of work", but right now she deserves some positive consideration for two reasons.
1. Her age
2. She diverted some heat from the Mari Marmara discussion.
The latter makes her a strange, but welcome, bedfellow.

Oh, man, click-cost talk on Althouse! YAY!
Here's an interview where Garage explains his views on Pat Buchanan.
Very enlightening: Take it away, Garage
Must have floated right by me and went right to Sarah Palin then eh? I never voted for Buchanan, supported him, and held fundraisers for him.
Neither did Sarah Palin.
"McCain spokesman Michael Goldfarb, who declined last night to comment on Palin's relationship with Pat Buchanan, today denies it to ABC:
'Gov. Palin has never worked for any effort to elect Pat Buchanan — that assertion is completely false. As Mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin did attend an event with Mr. Buchanan in her hometown, where reports described her wearing a Buchanan for President button. She wore the button as a courtesy to Mr. Buchanan, and in an effort to make him feel welcome during his visit, but immediately sent a letter to the editor of her local paper clarifying that the button should not have been interpreted as an endorsement of any kind.'
The statement leaves a bit of space between working for Buchanan and supporting him in 1996, but there's no evidence that she did back him then.
I also spoke to Bay Buchanan, Pat's sister, this morning. She also said her only knowledge of Palin's contact with Buchanan was at the event in the '90s, which she described as a fundraiser for Alaska Republican Jerry Ward. Ward couldn't immediately be reached."
Flinging dishonest crap like this at Sarah Palin (or anyone else) is not going to make your love letter to Pat Buchanan, nor any of your other anti-semitic remarks, magically disappear.
garage mahal brings the thin gruel.
garage, I didn't think you could get any deeper into your pathetic anti-semitic wallowing, but you've amazed me with your tenacity.
I can just see you and Cedarford in the Bürgerbräukeller back in '23, duking it out with the opposition, with the sweet, burning smell of the oven stacks in your futures, wafting over Poland and Germany like the Devil's barbecue...
You're either with them or your against them. Doesn't get much simpler than that.
Something that even the Bushies publicly admit - pushing forward those elections was a big mistake.
Well now that we're at the Blame Bush stage of the conversation I suppose garage is running out of ammo.
Well if that is indeed the case garage then it would seem that the Palestianians in Gaza are a bunch of extremists who simply want to finish the Final Solution. Guess pretty much anything Israel does other than mass suicide is going really be counterproductive with them is it now?
You're either with them or your against them. Doesn't get much simpler than that.
No, dear Uncle. You can still support Israel and think, for instance, that Netanayu is an ass. He's arrogant; and he seems to be in politics for himself more than for his country.
You can also support Israel and think that killing the people on the Turkey Ship was a mistake... The issue should be what is good for the country's people, not whether the country's actions follow some theoretical neo-conservative blueprint or not. It is better for the Israelis and their supporters abroad if Israel's government doesn't play directly into the hand of its detractors.
Flinging dishonest crap like this at Sarah Palin (or anyone else) is not going to make your love letter to Pat Buchanan, nor any of your other anti-semitic remarks, magically disappear.
Listen dickhead, I could give a flying fuck what you think, therefore nothing you say to me (ignorant and stupid as they are) could possibly register with me. Some commenters here yes. You? Never. And really, Michael Goldfarb as a source for truth?
No, dear Uncle. You can still support Israel and think, for instance, that Netanayu is an ass
Jew Hater!
Must have floated right by me and went right to Sarah Palin then eh? I never voted for Buchanan, supported him, and held fundraisers for him.
Why not? You consider him to be almost the only sane Republican, and you personally like him -- why wouldn't you want him to be the Republican nominee? You obviously care a lot about politics. Shouldn't you use some of that energy to support sane and likable candidates from both parties? :)
You can also support Israel and think that killing the people on the Turkey Ship was a mistake
Well if the alternative was that the Israeli commandos be beat to death then it wasn't a mistake.
The mistake was a bullshit attempt at crossing a naval blockade for the sole purpose of trying to provoke an incident.
You know, the Israelis should have sub-contracted the blockade to the SEIU and called it a picket line. Then all the liberals would rally to thier side.
Garage,
What AC245 said didn't fuck you, though. It was what you said that did. Especially the part where you were all like, "Buchanan blew the ZOG dog whistle, and I came a runnin', yes I did!"
No, dear Uncle. You can still support Israel and think, for instance, that Netanayu is an ass. He's arrogant; and he seems to be in politics for himself more than for his country.
Well, Dead Julius; what makes you think I was referring to Israel.?
I was referencing the Nazis, who garage seems to have a hardon for as far as Jews are concerned. Come to think of it, so do you.
The equation is very simple, Julius. For or against? No conditions. It doesn't work that way. Conditions are like bureaucrats; there are way to many of them and they only get in the way.
(BTW, Invoking Netanyahu is stupid and disingenuous; look at the outpouring of support for him across the political spectrum in Israel over this.)
Once again: For or against? Do you stand with those who would repeat the Holocaust or against them?
@H.D.-
Well if the alternative was that the Israeli commandos be beat to death then it wasn't a mistake.
The mistake was a bullshit attempt at crossing a naval blockade for the sole purpose of trying to provoke an incident.
The "alternative"? What kind of idiotic leadership brings you to the situation where the alternatives are to kill 9 people, causing much of the world to view you in the worst possible light, or to be "beat to death"?
Crappy leadership does!

I said sane for a Republican. I think what I was talking about at that time was the media's insane piling on Hillary and her supporters for being racists, something conservatives today are constantly whining about. I liked Buchanan's commentary on that.
@Uncle Mojo-
Do I have a hard-on for Jews? Hehe... you betcha! I would like nothing more right now than to find a lovely Jewish girlfriend... preferably with a lively spirit, an interest in the world, a nice smile, and a big nose!
I'm logging onto JDate right now.
I liked Buchanan's commentary on that.
That gruel is getting thinner, garage.
For or against, punk?
Do you stand with Iranians and their bitches, Hamas? Or do you stand with the state of Israel?
Simple question for an intelligent person, really.
I would like nothing more right now than to find a lovely Jewish girlfriend... preferably with a lively spirit, an interest in the world, a nice smile, and a big nose!
I'm already there, Julius. For the last 19 years. I'm privileged to be her husband.

Well, garage, I realize Goldfarb is probably one of, you know, those people, but not everyone makes the same automatic assumptions you do that Jews are untrustworthy, lying bastards.
If you have a reliable source that supports your innuendo and contradicts what he said, present it.
For or against, punk?
I'm for Israel
Are you for, or against the United States and it's President before any other country? Yes or no.
Garage Mahal wrote:
Never said we shouldn't support Israel. The American government politely asked Israel to freeze building any more settlements. What did Israel do? tell us to fuck off. In turn they told you to fuck off, and for that they get your full 100% support no matter what they decide to do. I want Israel to get their shit together and play ball with our interests and stop doing the stupid and counterproductive things they have been doing.
We asked that they stop building settlements in Jerusalem THEIR CAPITAL city. Perhaps people are siding with Israel on this because Obama should not have asked that of Israel nor should Israel have had to capitulate on that, nor was that something agreed to in its negotiations. It temporarily halted building in the West Bank, but perhaps the request from Palestinians and Barack were unreasonable.
And what are our intersests vis a vis Israel? Are they what is espoused by dame Helen, and many/most libs who want Israel out of Palestine. This would be a good time for you to clarify your own position which sounds an awful lot like the Palestinian Position.
I think what I was talking about at that time was the media's insane piling on Hillary and her supporters for being racists, something conservatives today are constantly whining about.
I think what you said was:

An truthfully I thought Buchanan's joke about Washington D.C. being "Israeli occupied territory" years ago friggin hilarious, with some truth behind it. But, I'm in the minority of liberals who like Buchanan."
Because, garage, if you're standing with Hamas, then you stand with the heirs to the Nazis, spread through every muslim dictatorship in the Middle East. There can be no denying that.
I'm old enough to have heard from the lips of an honest to god Nazi that Hitler was right, but too timid in regards to the Jews.
I'm old enough to have stood in the midst of tens of thousands of Spanish Falangistas with their right hands outstretched in the fascist salute, chanting, "Franco! Franco! Franco!" The faces glowed with fascist fanaticism.
I've seen these things and continue to see them, however cloaked in semantics, in the left, as personified by people like yourself.
Garage, I am for the United States before any other country.
As you well know, however, the United States is not personified by an individual, such as the president, but as an ideal.
Your question, while clever, is stupid and un-American in its intent.
Try again, tool.
So, garage...do you ever use the term "Sugartits" when addressing police officers?
I said sane for a Republican.
You said "he is about the only sane Republican", not "sane for a Republican". You also said that he was a racist poseur and that you like him.
I think what I was talking about at that time was the media's insane piling on Hillary and her supporters for being racists
Why speculate? Here is the discussion in question, which has nothing to do with Hillary Clinton:
Palin's church can't be any weirder than Obama's, and if she is a Pat Buchanan Republican I feel safer. He is about the only sane Republican I've heard these past 8 years.
It is easy to forget these days, but back in the day you were quite the Obama-hater. Your best bet at this point is to slink away from the thread, delete your old posts, and develop amnesia about this entire discussion. :)

Thanks, garage, thought so.
Just remember that the whole purpose of the blockade is to prevent Hamas from getting rockets shipped in. No more blockade = More rockets for Hamas.
Which would be a bad thing.

If you're bothered by people calling you a Nazi, you might want to stop talking about how much you like famous Nazi sympathizers.

"Am I the only person who feels that way?"
I don't think so. Then again, she didn't say anything that Arab nations have been saying for decades, and I can't find the quote off hand but she was pretty close to saying exactly what Achmedenijad said (something to the effect of why couldn't the Jews have been re-located in Europe).
Helen Thomas is of Lebanese descent. We should keep in mind that the kind of shit-drippery that spouted of her mouth is common sentiment in the ignorant, backward cauldron of temper tantrums that is the modern Middle East.
One other thing to consider about the Jews is that post-WW2 they were viewed as victims and vulnerable after what the Nazis did. The problem for them came when they actually started standing up for themselves. I think for many on the left, when you stop being a victim you lose your 'street cred' with them.
I have a theory that the Jews serve, at least in the minds of some people, as a sort of permanent, collectivized Christ-figure.
They can either act as the scapegoat for the world's political and moral failures, meekly absorbing the slings that come from that, or they can be scorned. Speaking up for and defending themselves is not an option.
Their virtue (if their enemies even see it that way) is to be found in being the salvation for the world's sins - but only when it involves their own suffering.

Let me help you out with that. Hamas receives weapons from ports and over land. The land and sea access was blocked by both Israel and Egypt. The Hamas sympathizers decided to try and break the blockade rather then submit the cargo to inspection. That's what I call poor leadership. Unless of course your goal was to provoke a fight. Well they got one.

Garage Mahal wrote:

I think what you mean is you find fault in Israel and none in it's enemies. This is standard lefty rhetoric and exactly how they or many of them view the US. Because, they say, they hold the US to a higher standard, they are more vocal in their opposition when it does wrong. This often means though, that the only group they ever criticize is the US (or Israel). Thus their support is actually not support at all, but a one sided and highly biased critique. Because the US, or Israel is not perfect, it therefore is less. This also explains this type of article:
http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/palestinians-uighurs-and-the-curiously-selective-media/
130 uighur muslims killed by riot police in China. Because it is not Israel or the Jews killing them, it doesn't rate a story, nor anything more than the faintest denunciation. The reaction is more like "Oh, that's terrible, but now back to how crappy Israel is towards the Palestinians". And I think you hold Israel to such a high standard they can never do right in your book (unless they capitulate 100% to Hamas) and you hold Hamas to such a low standard they can do whatever they want with nary a comment from you.
First of all if the wall has reduced bombing victims to nil why the need for the blockade? How does the blockade help American interests in any way?
THe wall is for travelling on land, the blockade is by sea. THe wall prevents things like car bombs, but it doesn't stop Hamas from shelling Israel from afar. And it is a response to Hamas aggression. Why not tell Hamas to simply stop shelling Israel and I bet Israel would eventually lift the blockade. Also, expalin why Egypt is on board with a blockade? Coudl it be that they recognize a threat in Hamas? As to whether it's in our interest, what does that matter? Its in Israel's interest. It is a RESPONSE to naked aggression from Hamas. Remember, Israel gave Gaza back in an effort for peace with no preconditions, and Hamas is using it as a staging area for more attacks, because contrary to the suggestions of lefty apologists, they are not out for peace. Every time ISrael has given land to the Palestinians for peace they have used said land to commit further aggression. So then, Israel needs to RESPOND to said aggression in some way

Except we just heard how effective the blockades were at denying Gazans basic items. And if Israel can get on board ships and prevent weapons from reaching terrorists hands, then of course it's effective. Will it stop Hamas? Probably not, but then again, when Israel didn't have a blockade Hamas was shelling them. Perhaps that points to the doggedness with which Hamas will pursue their eradication of the Jews strategy, and point to the fact that they are not out for peace. When one side is, no matter what, out for blood then you simply have to respond since by you not responding you do not in fact stop attacks from occuring. A wall and a blockade are both defensive getstures on Israels part, and neither would be necessary nor implemented were it not for Hamas's endless aggression. So, rather than holding Israel to the highest possible standard and Hamas to no standard, why not instead hold Hamas to at least a minimum standard of, if you want to wage war with Israel expect them to respond, and if you don't like the response then stop doing the things that cause Israel to respond in ways you don't like. You, and all the Hamas apologists only enable further violence because of your one sided value system.
Second the blockading an entire country is illegal under international law. For it it to be legal Israel must be at war. With who? Gaza? if their claim is they are at war with Gaza then Gaza has every right to fire rockets into Israel. Sorry, but those are facts.
Which came first the chicken or the egg, or the shelling or the blockade. If Gaza has every right to fire rockets at Israel then Israel, viewing that they are at war has every right to setup a blockade against Hamas. Sorry, THOSE are the facts. Your view of international law is similarly one sided. You hold Israel to such a high standard that you apparently feel that they should be shelled indiscriminately and not respond. And you hold Hamas to such a low standard that you feel that they can commit acts of war, but because they are Hamas, they can neither be criticized for them, nor can their enemies respond. I don't want to hear about your international law if you only hold one side to it.
HDH said: "No. It does not. The reach into that age group is at the fringes of a bell curve if you plot it. They are not a rightful percentage of the population...they are an abberant. ... meaning screwloose.
You can "kick ass" with that segment all you want but they are minority...think of a dog show...think 80% watch the show and think 20% watch the pitbulls attack a judge....that gives you an idea of how well the fringe 2554 who watch Faux Noise are part of the collective audience."
Until you cite something that backs up your weird ass claims, you're talking out of your ass.
I'll wait.
HDHouse,
Like GMay said, when you can produce some evidence of this bell curve, I'll believe that it's more than a fantasy.
I don't know why so many people are bothering to bash Helen Thomas when, if her photo is any indication, she died an excruciating death eight to ten years ago.
We are not "bashing" Helen Thomas as much as we are bashing her poisonous ideology.
She's a Jew-hater, and that type of vitriol and ignorance deserves every bit of scorn and disavowal and disapproval.
"I'm sick of seeing your posts on Althouse. It is like having shits in the refrigerator."
Sounds like the little mantis shimp has some interesting (if grotesque) dining habits.

Actually, for the past 150 posts or so we've mostly been bashing garage mahal.
Sounds like the little mantis shimp has some interesting (if grotesque) dining habits.
