It's just a thing! And another thing is that a sharper, abler... ma'am is eager to undo all the hard work:
U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and GOP candidate Carly Fiorina have already started sharply attacking each other and offering a preview of what could become one of the most compelling Senate races in the country this fall. You may have a title, but you don't have an entitlement.
"In her 28 years as a career politician, Barbara Boxer is a bitter partisan who has said much but done little," Fiorina said in speech full of barbs at Boxer as she accepted the GOP nomination Tuesday night here. "She gets an A in politics, but she gets an F in achievement."....
Boxer, meanwhile, is one of the more liberal members of the Senate and voted three years ago against a war funding bill that did not include a timeline for withdrawal from Iraq. She is one of the key backers of the climate change legislation in Congress and has voted for almost every part of President Obama's agenda in Washington...
In 2007, in criticizing the Bush administration's policy on Iraq, she highlighted the fact that then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice didn't have children, drawing ire from conservatives.
"Who pays the price?" Boxer asked Rice at a hearing while discussing families who might send their children to war. "I'm not going to pay a personal price. My kids are too old and my grandchild is too young. You're not going to pay a particular price, as I understand it, with immediate family. So who pays the price? The American military and their families."

Well, that's setting the limbo bar just about as low as it can possibly go, don't you think? Compared to Boxer, Vin Diesel would make "a sharper, abler ma'am." ;)
From BusinessWeek in 1999:
Carly Fiorina has a silver tongue and an iron will.
And an steel-reinforced bladder:
When the 44-year-old was considering the CEO post at Hewlett-Packard Co., she met board member Richard A. Hackborn for lunch at the Gaslight Club in Chicago's O'Hare airport. Hackborn, who had built HP's printer business into a gold mine in the 1980s, had decided to leave HP's board to devote his time to charity work. But over salads and ''what felt like 10 gallons'' of iced tea, Fiorina persuaded him not only to reconsider but also to step up as chairman.
Can she leverage her remarkable bladder capacity to the US Senate?
and your point is what?
That Boxer is an idiot. Pretty obvious to anyone who isn't a blithering fool.
I remember seeing that clip awhile ago. Sad thing is, the man to whom she was speaking has seen, managed, lead and achieved far more than this woman ever has or will.
I remember thinking at the time of that "Call me Senator" flap that Boxer didn't deserve the respect "Ma'am" denoted.
You're right, Althouse. This should be an interesting battle. I'm just hoping it is a delightfully interesting battle.
I really wish the General would have simply responded with 'Yes ma'am'.
What was she going to do? He doesn't answer to her.
So I click over to the linked article to see a Hewlitt-Packard ad on the sidebar.
I really, really wish Kaus would have won. Wow, that would not only be better politically and refreshingly necessary for the Democratic party, and California, (and the USA as a whole); But it would be positively surreal to have that much self-deprecating humility and humor in our political theater. (The Anti-Franken?) Ah, well... Am I wrong?
This is O/T, but I think the Althouse commentariat could have fun with the racist Hallmark card
Had he been referring to male Senators as "Senator" or "Sir"?
To my mind, nothing illustrates the total lameness and absurdity of the California GOP. Look at the candidates GOP primary voters selected to run against her three times over the last 18 years. Ridiculous.
Fiorina is a hot mess but it will be interesting to follow this race in November.
What do you mean she does not have entitlement? That is all the Democrat Party is about- entitlement. They are entitled to stay in office, they are entitled to say demeaning, dehumanizing, and insulting things, they are entitled to offer the whole world, including terrorists entitlements.
Of course she is entitled. What good is having a title if you cannot abuse entitlement?
"Look at the candidates GOP primary voters selected to run against her three times over the last 18 years. Ridiculous."
Yeah, right. Where are they now these fine, ambitious leaders for California? Ha.
Dems are using the tact that "Fiorina cut 15,000 jobs at HP".
Reps should counter that "The economic policies that Boxer supports have cost millions of jobs in California and the country".
EM, black holes does not equal black "ho's" now, does it!
What a parade of buffoons!
Thanks, that made my day.
Trey
Hopefully this clip will run on an endless loop until November.
Kaus is where the Dems should be in a nation like the United States. If they were, they would win nearly every race. I would go more conservative personally, but having the country run by people where he represents the left end would be a nation with few of our current problems. Such a nation would show the world the the unequaled benefits of a truly free nation as we used to do in past generations.
Had he been referring to male Senators as "Senator" or "Sir"?
I would guess Sir, since he is military.
Re: the Hallmark card. I hear Black Hole, not Black Whore, when the card is played.
Whoops! Lameness, indeed.
Please make that "To my mind, nothing illustrates the total lameness and absurdity of the California GOP *better than Boxer's 3 terms in the Senate*."
@E.M.: Just. Wow. ... Are they really that uneducated and conspiratorially driven that they really think Hallmark Corp. would randomly throw in blatant hate-speech in a greeting card? And NO ONE at NAACP, California Knows what a Black Hole is ??? Amazing. Terrifyingly Sad. Goodnight America. Thanks teacher unions... Thanks Race-Baiters. Last one out, turn off the lights.

And your biggest achievement was running Lucent Tech and HP into the ground, laying off thousands, pushed through an idiotic 19 billion merger against the wishes of your stockholders, most notably Walter Hewitt himself, and walked with a 21million dollar severance. The day you were fired HP's stock rose 7 percent. Heckuva job Carly.
To all of those who think Boxer will undoubtedly win, I would suggest a quick wiki search on a guy named Scott Brown.
A few years back, I didn't know anything about B.Boxer. Then I heard her on the Diane Reams show (NPR) during the Alito hearings. She had just made a comment about how dangerously right-wing this nominee was. A caller then asked that if Alito was right-wing, where she considered herself. She said she considered herself to Be Barbara Boxer.
So...she creates the playing field and uses that playing field to decry a political opponent. Then, when pressed, decides that she's too good for her own construction and elevates herself above the rest of us.
She's an elitist hack with far, far too long in office. T'ro da Ma'am out.
Speaking of which, for someone who proports to be a bleeding heart about the American military and their families, she doesn't understand anything about it if she thinks "ma'am" was somehow disrespectful. Then there's the hamfisted way she handled that hearing with the chairman of the Black Chamber Of Commerce.
Truly...she needs to go.
I suppose that if it takes the Obama Presidency to drive out the corrupt and mendacious Legislators like Boxer, Reid, etc. who have sold our country down the river, then he might not be as disastrous and useless as he appears.
Keep up the good work, Wee-Wee.
I had the delightful honor of voting for Kaus yesterday even though I knew it was a fruitless effort. I had to register as a democrat to do it, but it was worth it. Boxer is an awful, awful woman. Dumb as a post, yet it would not surprise me if Californians put her back in office. Go Fiorina!
"I would guess Sir, since he is military."
Not necessarily. He was a staff officer of at least O-6 rank, if memory serves. Generals in the military are supposed to be referred to by subordinates as General, not sir or ma'am. Sir or ma'am will fly, but it's "supposed" to be General.
Either way, without watching the video, I'm willing to believe his responses were mixed with parts "Yes, sir" and "yes, Senator".
garage mahal, wide awake for his daily beatdown says: "A bunch of stuff about Fiorina's achievements in the private sector."
Wanna give us a quick rundown on the numbers Boxer has been putting up?
(Hint: they make Fiorina's look like pocket change in regards to both unemployment and bucks.)
I voted for DeVore. Fiorina acts miffed whenever someone challenges her positions or record. She's not much more likable than Boxer.
I see Garage has gotten the talking points memo.
Way to regurgitate, Garage.
Scott M, the question was referring to what the general was calling the male senators on the panel.
And I always call commissioned officers of all ranks sir or ma'am.

Hmmm...almost sounds like how the Obama administration is going.
I see Garage has gotten the talking points memo.
Fiorina isn't sufficiently "Bircher" for his tastes, is all. Not like his hero.

No she's an idiot. You're the blithering fool for not seeing it.
Trust me, Babs, you don't want people calling you by the title you worked hardest to earn.
Interesting thought exercise: postulate how HP would be today if Boxer were running it.
Well if California is any indication, insolvent.
We have Patty Murray potentially in trouble up in Washington state.
Fiorina's a bit like Murray's challenger, Dino Rossi. Fiscally conservative, lots of her/his own money, been clawing away for a while, not perhaps my first choice, but challenging the liberal orthodoxy nonetheless.
The liberal/democratic machine in Seattle has all the money and connections. I mean it's full of femi-nazis, gender theorists and Gaia loons for Christ's sake. They come here for fellow feeling.
"Interesting thought exercise: postulate how HP would be today if Boxer were running it."

Interesting thought exercise: postulate how HP would be today if Boxer were running it.
She would be telling people over and over to call her CEO instead of Ma'am because she's earned it.
...sorry...had to...
CA needs to get away from the Democratic Party. Face it. Things are bad in CA. They need some new blood badly.
Hdhouse:
One example is the Community Reinvestment Act, a Dem innovation, that led to the housing bubble. California suffered greatly from that bubble.
Another is open borders. Illegal immigrants have overrun CA and over-taxed its healthcare and education systems.
As a result, productive, tax-paying Californians have left the state.
Would you like other examples?
Fiorino should show how Law and Policies enacted by the Senate -- that Boxer supported -- helped and even persuaded her as a company CEO to do things harmful USA Employment, but helpful to the HP bottom line.
Note that I don't know that such policies exist, but I assume they do.
HDH: "...but that would be a lie now wouldn't it AJ?"
Care to explain how it's a lie?
Or are you just going to spew bullshit and pull one of those standard lefty troll disappearing acts like you did on the second Helen Thomas thread below?
Fiorina should use some of her campign cash to buy Boxer's novel and send one to every household in California.

I suspect that it would depend on the circumstance.
- in the form where the General starts dialogue with: "Senator, our position on that topic is..."
- in response to a question, the response would certainly be, "Yes Sir", "No Sir"
On the other part of the SFC's point. Sergeants (and I was one once) using rank as a form of speech to an officer is a slight sign of disrespect. "Yes Sir" is a sign of respect. "Yes Captain" is not.
Generals on the other hand like to be called General :)
My apologies for misspelling Fiorina's last name.
Ms. Fiorina will have a better chance of winning if she gets rid of the McCain style consultants trying to run her campaign the way they did Sarah Palin.
Until her cancer treatment, she was upbeat and forthright in interviews. After it, she was as programmed as one of her PCs.

Hoosier, it's an open fact Boxer has been right up there with Patty Murray in the competition for dimmest bulb in the US Senate for years. HD would be agreeing with you if there were an R after her name.
is she a blithering fool because she is from California
Let's just say, it doesn't help.
Garage, for once, has a point. Fiorina's tenure as CEO of HP will be campaign fodder, and it can reasonably be argued that she failed, or not. Sen. Boxer, though, should probably tread lightly because her career is ridiculously thin by comparison, and competence will be a theme this Nov.
Sen. Boxer graduated from Brooklyn College and was a stock broker briefly before marrying and raising a family. Her political rise was impressive, but her legislative achievements are modest. She wins because she's liberal and female.
Fiorina has degrees from Stanford, the University of Maryland, and MIT. She had a spectacular executive career at AT and T before taking the top job at HP. She exudes competence, and she's an outsider.
It will be a very tough campaign. The DNC will pull out all the stops, and fairly or not, many will see it as a referendum on the President anad the economy.
Fiorina is still a political rookie, but assuming no major gaffes and continued incompetence and failure in Washington, she'll be Senator Fiorina this fall.
"On the other part of the SFC's point. Sergeants (and I was one once) using rank as a form of speech to an officer is a slight sign of disrespect. "Yes Sir" is a sign of respect. "Yes Captain" is not."
This.
The general was probably more than happy to use the respect-neutral title after that nonsense. Nothing registers a subordinate's dissatisfaction with an officer's performance faster than referring to him/her by their rank.
Most generals/flags I've interacted with appreciate the acknowledgement of title at the beginnings and ends of conversation, but prefer sir/ma'am because conversation just gets cumbersome with constant use of titles.
If it were me I'd have peppered my responses with enough "senator" just enough for her to understand how petty and childish her request was.
I can only hope that if Carly Fiorina ever accepts the traditional concession call from Boxer, she puts it on speaker-phone and tells Babs to call her "Senator".
Garage, for once, has a point.
Well you know the saying about a stopped clock.
Although in the case of hdhouse, it would be a digital clock with a dead battery.

NO AJ...just give us one that you can lay at her feet instead of Mr.Bush's feet.

as a humorous aside, I have on more than one occasion (as a civilian, though in a military setting) addressed a female officer with "Yes Sir". I apologized afterward, but both of us recognized that I was responding instinctively with respect....
Honestly, Garage, I'm really interested in knowing. Why do you think this woman should remain a senator?
The best thing about Boxer is that every time her mouth opens unscripted, she confirms her position the least intelligent senator. I should "least intelligent" is gender neutral position.
Dumber than a "boxer of rocks" maybe?
BTW....the recipients of Sarah Palin's(the left's favorite pinata) endorsements - kicked butt yesterday. A little Obama lingo there.
Fiorina is still a political rookie
The implication that being a rookie is some kind of drawback requires you to ignore the current approval ratings of the Congressional veterans.
Like Madison Man, I would like a clean sweep of everyone and a fresh start (you know, some real hope and change). Yes there will be some collateral damage of good pols but in the words of hdhouse's and garage's favorite philosopher, you sometimes have to break a few eggs.
Honestly, Garage, I'm really interested in knowing. Why do you think this woman should remain a senator?
Oh for Allah's sake, what kind of question is that to garage? SHE'S A DEMOCRAT!! That's almost like asking him what his favorite color is.
In contrast to Boxer's comments, I remember Dianne Feinstein's very nice remarks introducing Condoleeza Rice at her Senate nomination hearing.
I disagree with Feinstein on a lot of issues, but respect her. In fact, I think I even voted for her once or twice.
Barbara Boxer, on the other hand, really does need to go away.
@Hoosier Daddy
I actually had typed out "other than the fact that she's a Democrat" but took it out to remove the snark factor. I'm honestly interested in hearing why, for instance, Boxer, an entrenched incumbent, would be better than say, Kraus?
Hoosier,
No doubt, the anti incumbent sentiment is real and powerful, so being a rookie and an outsider might have some political advantages. And I'm sure that Ms. Fiorina has some pretty sharp corporate political skills that should translate pretty well, but it takes more than that to get elected to a national office--ask Mitt Romney. The DNC will set every trap possible. If Fiorina steps in one, we'll see how successfully she extricates herself. That's all I'm saying.
If Fiorina steps in one, we'll see how successfully she extricates herself. That's all I'm saying.
Ah understood. In the same vein my view is that the electorate is somewhat schizophrenic. I think they want rookie politicians but then get turned off when they act like rookies.
Democrats should always be re-elected because they go after the rich pigs.
Hdhouse:
What is the drop dead expiration date for using "Blame Bush"? or perhaps Althouse could conduct a poll and ask her readers what the expiration date should be for Dems blaming Bush?
What is the drop dead expiration date for using "Blame Bush"?
Never. The legacy of his evil and incompetence will last to eternity.
Honestly, Garage, I'm really interested in knowing. Why do you think this woman should remain a senator?
Not up to me to decide. And I actually respected Kaus for getting out there and trying, even if I think he is a bit clownish. I was merely riffing off Fiorinas gobsmacking gall to call out someone else's achievements. I know some executives at HP, and there wasn't any at HP sorry to see her go.
garage still can't get over the fact that his hero Pat Buchanan (the only conservative he loves, by his own admission) isn't on the ballot.
Interesting thought exercise: postulate how HP would be today if Boxer were running it.
We learned from Fiorina's own lips that neither John McCain nor Sarah Palin were capable of running HP. (Although they were fine to take on the simpler task of President of the US.) So what chance would Boxer have?

Honestly up until she stepped in the political scene I never heard of Carley Fiorina and then I assumed with a name like that she was some indy singer from Lilith Fair or Lalapalooza.
Carly was born Carleton Sneed, daughter of a (wait for it) Law Professor. (Dad later became an Appellate Judge on the 9th Circuit.)
Carly dropped out of UCLA Law School to become a secretary in a real estate office. She dumped her first husband, and later married a bigshot at ATT who took her under his wing.

There is no rule that you get to be called by your official titles in the United States, you power mad cow. You get called "Senator" as a courtesy, nothing more. And courtesy is not something you demand.
On another note, when I first read that garage had been selling HP products "for 15 years" I thought that meant he had been working in the computer department of Best Buy for fifteen years. I mean, he's not exactly a poster child for good salesmanship when it comes to anything he says here.
I just want to call her former Senator Boxer.
I hope she can afford to live in California when she returns home. They're broke, as I understand it. Something about chronic Democrat Party overspending. But they plan to double down and spend spend spend and tax some more; and Boxer isn't exactly poor (net worth $1-5M), so she better hide some dough in a mattress or somethin'.
But it's all Greek to me.
I think Barbara "Call Me Senator" Boxer has a nice ring to it. That's how Fiorina should refer to her during the campaign.
Too bad Barney's Market Club in Chicago closed years ago. All the patrons were greeted with a hearty "Yes, sir, Senator!"

You clearly don't grasp the fact that the legislature is responsible for legislation that governs things like...oh, let's say the financial industry and the mortgage industry. So what I'm waiting for from ignorant fuckstains like yourself, is to cite for me the reams of legislation the legislature was proposing since the Democrats took control of it in 2006 to unfuck what they're all saying was fucked by Republicans.
Thennnnnn, I'd like to see your explanation of how it's the President who spends money when congress controls the budget. And the Democrats have controlled it since 2006.
Tell us just how it was Bush's fault. Have at it tiger! Go crazy!
Actually, Fiorina turned about to be right about the Compac merger. She was run out of her job for it. But in the end, she was right that HP needed to make better computers and merging with Compac was the way to do it. All of the "experts" at the time urged her to get HP out of the PC business and just make printers and cameras. She ignored them. And now HP makes a good computer again and she I think has been vindicated.
She is an interesting woman. It would be nice to have an intelligent conversation about her time at HP. Instead, we have house liberals HD HOuse and Garage doing their usual screaming monkey throwing shit act.

garage [teary-eyed, on YouTube]: "LEAVE JOSEPH GOEBBELS ALONE -- !!!"
Yeah, Fiorina didn't do the best job at HP, but HP wasn't really ready for someone like her. Plenty were just pissed because Fiorina wasn't an HPer, but was brought in from another company. Her Compaq merger was pilloried at the time, but I think more people now realize that it was the right move. It certainly vaulted HP into the market share spot it desperately needed.
Compared to Boxer, who is an outright buffoon, Fiorina is freakin' Einstein.
And why do we always have to go back to the Third Reich, there are plenty of full blown racists here, right now. Go ahead, talk about them. Mainstream conservatives have nothing in common with fascists and white supremacists. Moreover, those guys truly are the fringe and barely register as a real threat. What actual violence have they done in the past 30 years? Heck, most of these orgs probably have more FBI informants than actual members. So no, we're not particularly worried about them.
The neo-nazi are on the rise since the election of Obama, per Garage. We note that the homeless expand and are visible upon the election of a Republican and that racists are on the rise with the election of an African-American. Is there not one thing that cannot be known in advance about position of a liberal on any freaking topic at all?
Ok garage, here is my final word on the matter. I know you're a die hard liberal Democrat, I would never dispute that. Its well know. Its just that when you deigned to make a favorable reference and expressed admiration for a Republican and it wasn't Blanche Lincoln or Olympia Snow or some other GOP squishy but....Pat Buchanan!! I have to admit I was taken aback.

LMAO. Michael, ever heard of James Taranto and his "Homelessness Rediscovery Watch"?
Original Mike: I think when I began to observe the pattern of spontaneous homelessness I also began to understand that while the MSM may be liberal they are also pretty stupid. And take the rest of us to be as well.

Yeah, I would say one of those two. I remember enjoying Buchanan's commentary on the Dem primaries, beyond that, I suppose I guess I deserved some of the ass-kicking. Some. But fuck me.
We note again that the liberal end of the spectrum, those open minded defenders of the weak, despise a woman who has made an enormous success of herself. You note that she was once a lowly secretary, a concept to be sneered at, that people inside HP despised her (what a surprise, the underlings don't like the boss and think they are smarter than the boss, that her deal with Compaq was a farce. Liberals hate smart business women. Absolutely hate them.

The day you were fired HP's stock rose 7 percent. Heckuva job Carly.
Really? I truly wasn't aware of that.
I am going to vote for Carly for sure now!
My favorite part though, garage, is how you are trying to sound like you actually cares about stockholders.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
Nice try, though - thanks for the laugh!
Sorry, garage, my mistake.
Barbara Boxer: Decades of EPIC FAIL
In the immortal words of Instapundit: "Heh." ;)
Ms. Fiorina is not correct. Senator Boxer has the achievement of making Alan Cranston look good.
She has succeeded, time to move on.
I love Boxer here. She'll easily beat Carly 'demon sheep' Fiorina.
... and yet still more fail-flavored fruit drink for all you pouty-faced Dems out there to moodily sip at, today: Great news for Democrats: Senate candidate [Alvin Greene] facing obscenity-offense felony.
We enjoy how you are a fanboy of Pat Buchanan. And we also enjoy that you somehow think it is a "smear" to quote your own words back to you.
" I remember enjoying Buchanan's commentary on the Dem primaries,"
Nothing wrong with that. The guy may have good political insights. Personlly, I don't know, because I don't listen to him. I firmly believe that MSNBC really does give him air time to give conservatives a bad name.
Ok guys lets cool it with garage. He's really ok and down deep inside there is good in him. Hey Darth Vader turned out good in the end and that's garage in a nutshell. He was corrupted by the Dark Side of the Force is all. Sooner or later he'll realize that Obama really is Emperor Palpatine and Washington DC truly is that wretched hive of scum and villany. He will metaphorically throw the Emperor down the shaft in the Death Star and turn to the Good side of the Force.
Then again I could be completely wrong and garage actually is the Dark Side of the Force.
Nah..that has to be hdhouse.
I remember enjoying Buchanan's commentary on the Dem primaries
You didn't mention Buchanan's commentary on the Dem primaries. What you did mention was:
I thought Buchanan's joke about Washington D.C. being 'Israeli occupied territory' years ago friggin hilarious, with some truth behind it.
(Even Clinton abandoned his "I did not have anti-semitic relations with that man, Mr. Buchanan"-style protests once the blue dress was found, because he knew they just compounded his original offense with reminders of his basic dishonesty.)
I'm not being hard on garage. My comment was that there's nothing wrong with his statement: " I remember enjoying Buchanan's commentary on the Dem primaries," I just don't like his (or anyone else's) attempts to associate me (not personally, but as a group) with Buchanan because we are both "conservatives". That's crap.
I remember enjoying Buchanan's commentary on the Dem primaries
"I thought Buchanan's joke about Washington D.C. being 'Israeli occupied territory' years ago friggin hilarious, with some truth behind it."
Garage says he "enjoyed" Buchanan's mad barkings, re: "Israeli-occupied territory."
In this instance, at least: I am fully prepared to take him at his word.
That's not a problem... is it?
I just don't like his (or anyone else's) attempts to associate me (not personally, but as a group) with Buchanan because we are both "conservatives". That's crap.
To further Original Mike's point, way back on the original thread where garage posted his love letter to Buchanan, no fewer than three "conservatives" explicitly rejected Buchanan:
Methadras:
"It's always about the jews with you guys isn't it? "
vbspurs:
"Curiously, I find him disgusting, and stopped watching Fox News during his recent little sojourn.
As much as I deride Neo-Conservatives for their facile ideas of nation-building and cross-cultural expectations, I have nothing but contempt for the isolationist, anti-semitic Paleo-Conservatives like him."
Dogwood:
"Pat went off the deep end a long time ago. I used to be a fan about 20 years ago or so, but the above behavior/beliefs drove me away.
I haven't listened, watched or read Pat in years. "
Their observations obviously didn't make much impression on garage, though, because he still popped up in this thread demanding that conservatives denounce Buchanan as the right's equivalent of Helen Thomas.
About half a dozen "conservatives" had no problem kicking Buchanan to the curb (DBQ, Trooper York, A.W., kent, Scott M, me ). But even after all of those, garage still wailed:
"So there is a racist conservative poser on tv every night and not one call from conservatives for him to be fired? Good one!"
Eventually, garage's PDS kicked in and he tried to blame Buchanan on Sarah Palin, which led me to do a quick check of the archives on "Palin Buchanan garage", which of course turned up garage's earlier declaration that Pat Buchanan was the only sane Republican of the past 8 years.
So far as I've seen, the only person on Althouse who has expressed admiration for Buchanan - and explicitly for his ZOG conspiracy theories - is garage mahal.
And garage mahal is also the one continually trying to push the propaganda line that it's conservatives who hold Buchanan's views.
His dishonesty deserves pushback.
Eventually, garage's PDS kicked in and he tried to blame Buchanan on Sarah Palin
... and, further enlarging upon AC's point, here: it was at this juncture that garage then attempted to dishonestly smear Palin by implying, leadenly, that she was a John Birch supporter. Googling up the flimsy allegation in question, I promptly found the contemporaneous debunking of said hokum... on the left-wing site Politico, no less:
"The current, and then-, president of the group, John McManus, confirmed that the cover fit the description of a 1995 issue of the magazine.
[snip]
"McManus said Palin wouldn't have had to have any connection to the society, or the journal, to have wound up with that issue on her desk.
"'Any attempt to link her to the John Birch Society would be ridiculous,' he said of speculation on the liberal blogs that first noticed the magazine.
[snip]
"'We sent thousands of copies of that newsletter out to all kinds of people trying to forestall the constitutional convention,' McManus recalled. 'The plan at that time was for us to send copies of that newsletter to county commissioners, mayors, state legislators, local officials.'"
A second Google -- this time for "Pat Buchanan" + "John Birch" -- promptly provided concrete evidence that, unlike Palin, garage's "enjoyably" semitaphobic guy, Buchanan, WAS a proud supporter of the John Birch Society (!).
As AC so succinctly put it: "His dishonesty deserves pushback."
And then some.
wow, that's impressive AC245, that sleuthing must have taken you hours.
bravo.

I haven't changed my screen name in 5 yrs.
Do you have 5 yrs worth of archives of blogs you've commented on that I can google through. Fair is fair, no?
Buchanan is a Republican.
And yet you like and admire him anyway. How bipartisan of you, garage mahal. :)
And why do we always have to go back to the Third Reich, there are plenty of full blown racists here, right now.
You, for example. In your own words, you like one of the most openly racist Republicans and consider him one of the only sane party members. Your hatred for the Israelis is, however, purely coincidental and not related to your support of the most famous Holocaust denier on MSNBC. And that's the story you're sticking with, I guess.
Do you have 5 yrs worth of archives of blogs you've commented on that I can google through. Fair is fair, no?
"You only caught me because I didn't do a good enough job covering my tracks" really doesn't work as a defense, dude.
Well, I never said I hated Israelis for one thing, never said I even hated Israel. Never said I hated Jews. But, don't let me stop you.
Do you have 5 yrs worth of archives of blogs you've commented on that I can google through.
Knock yourself out. (I imagine I'm far from the only "kent" commenting, online... but I am, so far as I know, the only "kent" on any board where I do or have posted.)
Here's a nice box lunch, to tide you over along the way. Wear clean underwear. Write if you get work. [::waves enthusiastically::]
Oh please, Garage. You express admiration for Pat Buchanan, but the only thing you seem to like about him is that he's a foaming anti-semite.
So tell us what you think. Should Israel be allowed to exist? If an enemy force launches rockets at them, can they retaliate in kind? If a foreign nation vows to destroy Israel and then builds up the capability to do it, does Israel have the right to destroy that capability and/or that nation?
garage, now you're just flailing.
You could say "Geez, I guess I was a jerk trying to paint everyone with a broad brush using the paint dripping off my own face."
But that's OK. We don't have to have you express yourself any more clearly than you did when you said you admired Buchanan.
Why is it smearing to quote your own words back to you?
As I said before, garage, meet petard.

I really wish the General would have simply responded with 'Yes ma'am'.
What was she going to do? He doesn't answer to her.
The military can't afford to make an enemy out of Congress, from whence money flows. If he'd said that she would have demanded his head. And got it, too.
AC245, don't worry about Garage Tubby McFat. He's a useless, putrid pile of leftard rabbit shit that is nothing more than an internet epileptic that flails us mercilessly with his moronic, idiot rantings. He hasn't formed a cohesive thought since 1980 and now we have to endure this buffoons blatherings as an affront on our collective visual cortex.
Hey Garage, when you spent more time thinking up idiocy to throw at us like a pissed off chimp at a zoo who is getting stared down by the humans, you really prove that you are a bitter clinger to your pitiful and bankrupt ideology. Frankly, you are one of it's most embarrassing adherents, you pathetic oaf.
It's a given that Boxer is an idiot, elected by idiots.
The "ma'am" incident is the sound of cultures clashing.
In the military there are two ways to address an officer senior to oneself.
One way is to address them by their rank: 'Yes General Althouse, we did pull all the grass out of the sidewalk cracks'.
The other way is to address them as "sir" or "ma'am":
'Yes Ma'am, we did pull all the grass out of the sidewalk cracks'.
Normally one mixes both forms of address when speaking to a senior.
'Yes General Althouse, we did pull all the grass out of the sidewalk cracks...no Ma'am, nobody wore white socks'.
If, on the other hand, one does not have any personal respect for the senior then one might address them only by their rank, totally avoiding "sir" or "ma'am".
'Yes General Boxer we did pull all the grass out of the sidewalk cracks...no General Boxer, nobody wore white socks'.
To the military ear the strict use of the title only when addressing the senior is disrespectful.
But not as disrespectful as Boxer's rude behavior.

At least Cedarford is honest in his anti-Semitic views, but you are the worst kind of anti-Semite. You harbor a secret love for it and then lie about it. Between you an AlphaLiberal, you make quite a liars brigade here on Althouse. That's right, you're a liar and I'm calling you out on that.
Well, I never said I hated Israelis for one thing, never said I even hated Israel. Never said I hated Jews.
Interestingly, neither did Pat Buchanan. He never said he hated non-whites, either. Yet you recognized him as a racist anti-semite (not that it prevented you from admiring him).

nterestingly, neither did Pat Buchanan. He never said he hated non-whites, either.
All I will say, is you do have a point. My comment about Buchanan is pretty indefensible in retrospect. But, really, I'm cool with the commenters here that matter to me, I'm cool with Trooper, and he asked me to stop, so I'm going to. I seem to remember a few pretty hellacious comments from you revenant, and if this is the new game at Althouse - to solely dig up old comments to throw back into people's face, so be it. You guys are constantly screaming you deserve the benefit of the doubt about not being called racists when you may happen to criticize groups of people, like black, mexicans, women, and so on, on what you genuinely believe to have nothing to do with race, ethnicity, or religious orientation. It's refreshing to know we're all on the same exact page now right?
And it should be interesting as explore and learn just who are all these new fresh Tea Party/Libertarian candidates, and some of their views they hold. Won't it. Rand Paul comes to mind right away.
So close on admitting culpability.
All I know is the one who is loudest to flame is the one who has explicitly said he admires Pat Buchanan.

Poor Garage, you can't answer the questions that would separate you from Pat Buchanan's prejudices because to do so would be at odds with your ingrained Leftism.
Simple questions, really, but I'll make them simpler.

Do you believe that the final solution for peace in the Mid-East will be the eradication of Israel?

yea I did, all throughout the Dem primary for one thing, I trolled though those old threads in 2008. I was pretty perturbed about being called a racist just because I was for Hillary. recently I went to a tea Party here in Madison, and said on this blog I didn't see any racism at the rally whatsoever. I compared it to a fishing tournament atmosphere. I could have lied, right?
- you're always the first person to sling phony accusations of racism and bigotry,
I defy you to find examples in 5 yrs of posting here of charges of racism that I hurled to any Althouse commenters. It just isn't there. I've already conceded the point here on Buchanan. Would you be so honest?
You'd like to be, sure, but I'm afraid the only person you're on the exact same page with is Cedarford. :)
To clarify, there are all sorts of racism, just so we're clear that all forms are abhorrent. Agreed?
Garage, you've conceded that you regret SAYING what you said, but do you still believe it?
I'm not being a prick for no reason, I want to know what someone who considers their self a mainstream Lib thinks about Israel.
Do they have a right to exist?
Are they secretly manipulating international finances?
Do they have the right to destroy the nations seeking to destroy their nation?
Lincoln,
Considering garage's comment about the U.S. congress being Israeli-occupied territory, I'd also like to see him expand on that.
I haven't changed my screen name in 5 yrs.
Are you the same commenter as the "Garage Mahal" in this thread from about 3.5 years ago (the earliest comment by that name that Google turned up)?
If so, I notice your very first comment here was removed by Althouse because you were spamming talking points from another blog. I also notice that that account you used then is not the same one that you're currently posting with.
If that's not you, then the earliest post by you on your current account here at Althouse looks to be from late September, 2007 - closer to 2.5 years ago than 5.

Here's my comment history at Althouse: search all you like. Since I've never made any comments admiring an anti-semite and his anti-semitic point of view, I think you'll be disappointed.
Also, I'd be willing to bet that you could search the comments of any of the other "conservatives" here and you still wouldn't find any who shower praise on anti-semites for their anti-semitic jokes and conspiracy theories.
You'll let us know how those searches turn out, right?

AC245,
I'll admit to not digging through your research too thoroughly, but I didn't see any direct accusations of racism by GM toward any Althouse commenters which, in all fairness, is what he was saying.
Obviously he does it indirectly all the time, as evidenced by the quotes you dug up, but he appears to be technically correct about direct accusations.
So there is a racist conservative poser on tv every night and not one call from conservatives for him to be fired?
James Taranto, The Best of the Web Today, June 8, 2010:
Among her many honors, Helen Thomas, who “retired” yesterday as a columnist for Hearst Newspapers, in 2000 received the Helen Thomas Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Society of Professional Journalists. […]
We've been calling Thomas “American journalism's crazy old aunt in the attic” for years, and the events of the past few days should have laid to rest any question of which description is more accurate, ours or the SPJ's. […]
The really appalling thing about [Kevin] Smith's [SPJ national president] interview with [David] Weigel [of the Washington Post] is this line: “On the other hand, if you were Jewish and given this award, would you go up and accept it?” How about if you were a decent human being? (There are at least a few among the ranks of professional journalists — trust us.) The notion that only Jews would take exception to Thomas's call for ethnic cleansing — or to the SPJ's crediting her with “dogged pursuit of the truth” — is obtuse, to say the least.
Nine journalists other than Helen Thomas have accepted the Helen Thomas Award, perhaps because they were unfamiliar with her work. Now, though, no one has such an excuse — which means that if the SPJ decides to keep the award going, it may have trouble finding someone willing to collect it. But we can help:
The obvious choice for this year's honor is Patrick Buchanan, a syndicated columnist and commentator for MSNBC and “The McLaughlin Group,” who has a long history of practicing journalism in the spirit of Helen Thomas. And he's definitely not Jewish!
(endquote)
I didn't see any direct accusations of racism by GM toward any Althouse commenters which, in all fairness, is what he was saying.
Gmay, in all fairness, I quoted exactly "what he was saying":
I defy you to find examples in 5 yrs of posting here of charges of racism that I hurled to any Althouse commenters. It just isn't there.
In additional to his constant scattershot innuendo and accusations, the last item I listed in my previous comment is pretty direct:
"your racist asshole teabagger bretheren that call people n*ggers and spit on them on their way to a vote. Real darlings, you all."
Barring the thin reed of a defense that only a direct declaration calling out a specific person by name (e.g. "I am calling you, GMay, a racist!") counts, I don't see how you dismiss "you all and your racist brethren call people n*ggers" as not being an accusation of racism against other commenters in that thread.
Fair enough AC. I should have paid closer attention. My apologies.
