I'm getting the Oxford link.

On Brat's I love them, but not in American hotdog buns.

Brats ought to be in Brotchen

Hey, it's the Sentry BratFest this weekend.

That's a wonderful place. Music on the terrace tonight!

Sorry about screwing up a link again! Try it now.

Cola in instead of beer?

Where's the tradition?

Who's bringing the accordion?
Brats go great with "The Beer Barrel Polka" in the background.

I hope that this is not another insult aimed at 1.4 billion Moslems by drawing part of Mohammed as a Brat. That would also be a pork offense and an alcohol offense . Free Speech for salty pork maybe the first freedom we lose when the Mosques go up everywhere.

The Drill SGT বলেছেন...

Nurnberger Brats are the way to go.

BTW: I don't see much mustard use. Brats need good mustard.

Triangle Man বলেছেন...

Tough choice this time of year. Do I get my daily brat at the terrace, or at Brat Fest?

Original Mike বলেছেন...

"Brats need good mustard."

You got that right.

And I don't see any kraut, either.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

"Cola in instead of beer? Where's the tradition?"

Sorry to screw up my internet reputation, but I never drink in the daytime. If it was 5 pm, I'd have loved a nice beer. Except there was a mile and a half walk home, so I'd probably still have had a soft drink.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

There's some mustard.

I skip the sauerkraut. I don't like sour things. I find it hard even to eat fruit, I'm so averse to sourness.

Sarah from VA বলেছেন...

I'm in the throes of morning sickness, and so I haven't had much of an appetite. But that looks so good that I might just scrap my plans of a hearty dinner of rice and applesauce tonight and go hunting for brats, instead.

Music tonight:

"6:30 pm to
11:55 pm
"Festival de Musica"(Latin/Afro-Caribbean music weekend) Handphibians with Grupo Balanca and WADOMA
"Festival de Musica"(Latin/Afro-Caribbean music weekend) The Handphibians are a vibrant group of Madison-based musicians dedicated to playing and promoting Brasilian-style percussion. Grupo Balanca is a Madison-based ensemble that plays Brazilian Pagode. Pagode is a style of samba that developed in the 1980s in southern Brazil. In addition to pagode, the ensemble plays samba Enredo and Samba de Roda. The instrumentation of Grupo Balanca is cavaquinho, guitar, and an assortment of small hand held percussion instruments, including reco-reco, pandeiro, tan-tan, repinique de mao, and tambourim. WADOMA blends African, American and other global art forms to create a one-of-a-kind spectacle of movement and sound, educating and inspiring people through the universal experience of music and dance.

The only time I eat sauerkraut is at the Brat Fest. And I've never liked the Union Brats. Klements or Johnsonville for this non-native.

It's sad that the Madison Marathon no longer ends at the Brat Fest. What better way to recuperate from a nice long run than a hot juicy brat?

AlphaLiberal বলেছেন...

For the non-initiated. Generations have built and shaped the Terrace, sharing the love of the lake and the place and the view(s).

chickelit বলেছেন...

Althouse: I'm so averse to sourness.

And yet you can be acerbic at times. :)

Original Mike বলেছেন...

Actually, I haven't been to a BratFest since it moved. Too inconvenient. Seems like they're still breaking records, though.

We're cooking brats Saturday night. First of the season.

AlphaLiberal বলেছেন...

This collection is better. More people.

Good way to start Memorial Day Weekend on the Memorial Union Terrace.

I will toast those who have served and sacrificed tonight. And for those overseas now, hoping they can come home soon.

And then I'll toast peace.

And take the bus.

Drill: nurnberger brats with lowensenf--you are right; they are the best--kept the HQ of the 2d ACR going.

For the rest of the posters, might want to make sure Garage isnt providing road kill for the shindig.

Dude, out here and with the help of Johnsonville Bratwurst from COSTCO, it's like perpetual Summerfest.

No Photoshop for you this summer, young lady. Six weeks of link school.

Sorry to screw up my internet reputation, but I never drink in the daytime.

The sun must be past the yardarm!

I don't like sour things. I find it hard even to eat fruit, I'm so averse to sourness.

You should hang out with The Blonde some summer. She loves sweet and she loves fruit.

Original Mike বলেছেন...

"The sun must be past the yardarm!"

It's well past 11 am here.

Corky Boyd বলেছেন...

Eat brats now.

Soon they will be outlawed by the food nazis.

Really, nothing is better than a charred brat. But my system can't take more than one a month. Wish my cholesterol level were lower.

Triangle Man বলেছেন...

make sure Garage isnt providing road kill for the shindig.

There is no road kill in Madison. The little critters are safe because the impact is absorbed by all the bumper stickers.

Big Mike বলেছেন...

I was at a conference hosted at Monona Terrace about 8 years ago. Wish I had known then that I could get good brats there.

Original Mike বলেছেন...

Damn! I can't stop thinking about a brat.

Triangle Man বলেছেন...

Available side orders at the brat stand: bag of chips, corn on the cob.

Penny বলেছেন...

"Damn! I can't stop thinking about a brat."

Me either! But here's my problem...I never once tasted a brat. *not Midwesterner* Can someone please tell me how their taste differs from a hotdog?

The Drill SGT বলেছেন...

Can someone please tell me how their taste differs from a hotdog?

hotdogs are somewhat similiar to bockwurst. both are bland meat tubes.

Braturst are tasty things of beauty. All Brats are sausages. All sausages are not Brats. I'm not a huge fan of American brats.

You've had various types of sausages? that's your best frame of reference. IMHO Nurnberger Brats are the best, followed by Thuringer Brats and Wurzburger's.

Here's the wiki on Nurns:

Nürnberger Rostbratwurst A small, thin bratwurst from the city of Nürnberg. It is no longer than 7-9 cm and weighs no more than 25 g. It is traditionally grilled over a beechwood fire and served in sets of 6 or 12 with horseradish and sauerkraut or potato salad. Perhaps the most popular sausage in Germany, Nürnberger Bratwürste / Nürnberger Rostbratwürste is also protected under EU law with PGI status.[5] Traditionally roasted and served three abreast on a bun with mustard, this pork-based wurst is recognized in markets and restaurants across Germany. Fresh marjoram and ground caraway seed are attributed to being among the important ingredients in this distinctive sausage.

Thüringer Rostbratwurst The Thüringer Rostbratwurst is a spicy sausage from Thüringen. It is the oldest known Bratwurst in Germany and dates back to 1404. It is long (15-20 cm) and thin in shape. Traditionally, it is grilled over a charcoal fire and eaten with mustard [6] and bread.
Würzburger Bratwurst The Würzburger Bratwurst, also known as the Winzerbratwurst, comes from the city of Würzburg. Its size is similar to the Thüringer Rostbratwurst, but its ingredients include white Franken-Wine.

Penny বলেছেন...

Thanks Drill SGT. Thuringer is at least a brand name I have seen around here. Going to go in search of the famous brats.

Somewhere I have a recipe from eons ago on just how to cook brats. If memory serves me, they needed to be boiled in beer with onions first, and then grilled?

Man, my tongue is hanging out now! haha

Caroline বলেছেন...

God that looks delicious.

Need to go have dinner now...

AllenS বলেছেন...

OK, let's get something straight about sauer kraut and brats.

There is a place called Louies Finer Meats in Cumberland, WI. They make a brat called the Packer Brat (Cheddar & Kraut), absolutely delicious. That is just one of many delicious brats that they make. Try the Russian brat. Mmmmm, Mmmmm.

garage,

Didn't you once say you were from Ladysmith?

garage mahal বলেছেন...

Rhinelander. Home of the Hodag!

garage mahal বলেছেন...

And don't forget about Bratfest at the Alliant Center, for you icky east siders. Buck a brat.

AllenS বলেছেন...

Ok, Highway #8. Did Ladysmith and Rhinelander play each other in high school sports?

AllenS বলেছেন...

I'll bet you ate a lot of road kill when you lived up there, huh? Brats? Who needs brats?

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Big Mike said... "I was at a conference hosted at Monona Terrace about 8 years ago. Wish I had known then that I could get good brats there."

That's not Monona Terrace (which is on Lake Mononna, not on campus). It's the Memorial Union Terrace, which is on Lake Medota (on campus).

Big Mike বলেছেন...

Thanks for the clarification, Professor.

If it was 5 pm, I'd have loved a nice beer.

That just cries out for this song.

kjbe বলেছেন...

MM, I think the marathon started ending at the Brat Fest in ' 06 (and would add that it's not something I'd want after a marathon - as I recall, I craved a very large Coke and fries).

Gotta go with yellow mustard and sauerkraut. Love that sauerkraut!

chickelit বলেছেন...

LOL-tonight you spell like I do. You sure you didn't have a beer? :)

Yet it's interesting that even your misspelling is actually just a misplacement.

Sorry, I took the kids to BratFest. No, Rhinelander and Ladysmith didn't play each other. Rhinelander is part of the Wisconsin Valley Conference.

AST বলেছেন...

@The Drill SGT

Right on! American bread, especially buns, is for wusses who cut the crust off. I spent time as a missionary in Coburg, Bavaria and we had their brats with brötchen every day, except Sunday. Each city pretty much has its own style of brats. Coburg's were like foot long hot dogs but with coarsely ground meat and fat in them, cooked on outdoor grills.

Oh, for an authentic German eatery! I found one in Omaha, but I've never been to Madison. You must have some Germans there, don't you?

AST বলেছেন...

I forgot why I really came here.

Is this a subliminal sex reference, Ann?

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Looks like I was doing a correction, mis-aimed an "n" and ended up -- n-ed up -- with 2 typos.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

"Is this a subliminal sex reference, Ann?"

Yeah, plug the hole with that wiener.
