In the grayness of late winter, my eyes ache for redbuds. When I catch that first hint of magenta, it means that spring is actually possible again. My daughter would count them when we were driving down the road. It gave her something to do. They are in their full glory in Ohio.

I watched Hee Haw videos on YouTube. My sister-in-law gave me a book, Ancient Egypt Myth & History. It's arcane as all hell. I'm reading it out loud in Hee Haw voices. That takes a lot longer but it's 10x as funny.

My other brother and his wife and I went to Buckhorn Exchange, an historic restaurant in Denver. We had Buffalo, elk, alligator, yak, ostrich, and quail. It's totally loaded with taxidermy. Displays of old guns too. There must be at least 100 dead animals in there, possibly much more. Animals of every type, like a zoo. Lots of birds and rodents. Extremely macabre. There's this thing suspended from the ceiling that looks like a long gray balloon. My brother asked the guy running the place what that thing is. He answered, "it's the penis of a blue whale."

There are also tons of photographs of historic notables that visited, mostly famous entertainers but including photographs of several past presidents hanging interspersed with the heads and bodies of dead animals. Just say'n.

OK resident horticulturist. (Um .. I mean Meade, of course ;-) )

Help us. Is that really "red bud?"

I've heard it referred to as Judas tree/bush. I always thought of it as wild plum (because of the color?)

It's often found on the sides of the interstates in NC, TN and Kentucky.

Can you enlighten us?

Chip.

"... the penis of a blue whale."

Is that something we needed to know? Or you needed to tell us?

And how's your dogs card?

Meade म्हणाले...

@JAL: Those are probably Redbuds you're seeing along the highways - Cercis canadensis. Judas Tree is of the same Cercis genus but different species.

Don't forget -- quiz on Tuesday.

JAL म्हणाले...

Thank you sir.

I will be ready Tuesday. I think.

JAL, the dogs card is ready to make full size but on hold for thisweek because my family collected from around the country and I might not see them again for awhile. I did show them the card while they were here and not a one of them got it. They understood what the card was doing but they didn't get the joke. This concerns me. I must make sure to send the real card to somebody with joke-cognition. I noticed that about my family. All their jokes are surface level. If any trace of thought is required, it goes past them.

For example: we were asked to assemble for a group photo. A family friend was handed somebody's miniature digital. She fussed overly long with the thing puzzling over the live-view. She finally took a shot then asked, "does this thing roll forward automatically?" I burst out laughing and fell out of line. Honestly, that was the funniest thing I heard all week. I couldn't stop laughing. That she was thinking in film roll terms killed me. But everybody was looking at me like I was some kind of idiot. They just didn't see the humor in that.

Back in my pedestrian days, a sight like that told me my days of slip-slidin' away on the ice and snow were over for the next 8 months or so. The only thing that me even gladder to see were the first croci pushing their way above ground about a month earlier.

Spring defeats all the attempts man has ever made to outgrow his own lyric impulse.

Chip, an acquaintance was at a conference at a historically black university. The group was being welcomed by the president or some other officer of the university, and the woman I'm speaking of was in the first row. The official told them some other events they could get in on, including the "Black Arts Festival." She started laughing. It got the official's attention enough to stop his talk and give her a stern look. She said, "I'm sorry, but did you mean a black ARTS festival or a BLACK ARTS festival?"

Some people just have a more sensitive funny bone than others.

Here's some color for you! one of the overdue books, checked out to G. Washington fro NY's oldest library is Vattel's "Law of Nations". Of course FOX, pledged to bury the Obama eligibility issue, fails to report the significance of this. Obama apologists always say that Natural Born Citizen didn't come from Law of Nations (it was only the foremost Treatise on Natural Law and was written only 30 years before the Constitution). But here is direct evidence that the definition of Natural Born Citizen does indeed come from "LON"---"Born in a country of parents who are it's citizens". Besides, law of nations- the natural law of international relations is embedded in our Constitution as our common law in Article 1 Section 8 Clause 10.
