I'm in the NYT.

And they give me the last word about Tiger Woods and race.

I should rather see you published in a more reputable organ, mum.

National Enquirer, for example.

"Wondering if it is racist to idealize a black man like Tiger..."

Frankly, I was surprised to hear you say that in the Bloggingheads, but maybe because I am weary of the label, and had a bit of a reaction just to the WORD.

Does a link to BloggingHeads really count as being 'in' the New York Times? How does your video appear in the dead tree version?

A dead fish wrapped up in that paper is technically 'in' the NYT.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

@Helen It's not a link. It's embedded on a page within the NYT website.

David বলেছেন...

The real nugget here is that Althouse got to walk 18 holes inside the ropes with Tiger Woods (and that Kresge fellow too.) Confirming her status as a Goddess of the Modern Era.

The Professor was spot on. The white approach has been that blacks are either semi-human animals or Saints who alone deserve to be totally trusted. That is sick racist in a gutter on either side of the road nonsense. The real road has assholes and good men in both races. The end of racism requires no more black goodness assumptions as much as it needs no more of the older black badness assumptions.

Charlie Sifford, Lee Elder. What, they weren't black? Or they didn't play golf?

I have payed particularly close attention to Mr. Woods for two reasons: I'm an avid golfer and he and I attended the same high school - Western in Anaheim, California (me, class of '60). He hasn't said much over the years. Any public image that he has has been shaped by others.

Must celebrities be saints? Particularly if they haven't ever made claim to sainthood? I don't know how I'd behave if I were his age, nearly as good looking and fabulously wealth. Damn, never got the chance.

careen বলেছেন...

In this particular case, I don't care because I never admired Woods or thought much about him, but you're kidding yourself if you think this isn't what celebrities get paid for. They get paid for this kind of attention and scrutiny and projection, not their game or their movies or their songs. So no, he doesn't have to be a saint, but the definitely will be subjected to public ridicule, the same way he was publicly deified. Fame is a weird bargain. His handlers were aware of this faustian bargain, btw, and ran a tight ship until now.

He's not good looking, btw. That's the false glamour of fame all over him. It's not even the money.

NYT ...hmmmmmmm

It's curious that of all the excerpts they could've chosen, the NYT chose Ann's and Hanna's race segment. Oy, so predictable.

Hanna Rosin, left, of Double X and Ann Althouse of the University of Wisconsin Law School debate Tiger Woods and race.

Why does Hanna Rosin get kudos for Double X whilst Ann doesn't for her blog?

Cheers,
Victoria

wv: prong. Ann's Tiffany 4-prong is visible in the diavlog when she gets excited.

Victoria: It's because, apart from her companionate marriage, that's all Ms. Rosin has and even it is getting rolled back into Slate; whereas Althouse has an abundance of riches and the New York Times simply selected the most well-known.

And I thought it was the six-prong. She was trying on both rings and I think the 6 prong cost a couple thousand dollars more so naturally she went with that one.

Paco Wové বলেছেন...

Hey, AJD! Althouse got published in the New York Times. Isn't that neat?

Maybe you can arrange to have someone toss a copy into your piss-reeking gutter!

The video format doesn't enhance your stature, Ann. It just emphasizes the blowhard nature of the discussion.

The print format seems sort of within the scope of the actual importance of this issue... which is about zero or perhaps less.

Actually showing your faces and appearing to take this issue seriously makes the entire presentation laughable.

It's the Oprah show. Granted, Oprah makes a fortune peddling gossip.

Something especially dimwitted about some dame holding a phone up to her face during the video.

Interesting, vis a vis your bloggingheads segment:

AP: Tiger Woods Is Racist - He Only Cheats With White Women

I was just going to mention that too, Witts End. Why is it that everything connected to black and whites have to do with race (for some people). Sure I noticed that Elin is white, and ALL of the women Tiger is messing around with are also white, and society identifies Tiger as black.

But why do people always have to point out the race factor? Why not this angle -- Tiger likes cocktail waitresses. Maybe it's a class thing.

(It's not, but I'm saying that it's as relevant an angle as the race one)
