Did I hear correctly? It sounded like the bird buzzed, rather than hummed.
Modesty -- and fear of humans -- be damned. There's only so much time to wring the last little bits of summer out of the flowers and get the heck out of Dodge, so to speak.
I believe the buzzing is caused when the wings hit something else -- in this case, a leaf.
Hummingbirds provided quite a bit of entertainment at the outdoor wedding we attended last Saturday in Minneapolis. To those who need a hummingbird fix, I recommend the Longfellow Gardens.

I hang a hummingbird feeder beside my deck every spring, and watch them all summer long. The feeder's still there, but it's October now and a pretty sure bet the hummingbirds have migrated, so I'll bring it in this week and store it away for next year. They're one of my great pleasures.
