If you experience an uncontrollable itch in your scalp/neck area in the next few days, it's probably chiggers. Vinegar will kill them. It's why I rarely frolic on the grass anymore.
c'est la vie, though. Maybe it's too early for chiggers.
Never under estimate a good woman in love, and then you have to add in the Althouse trifecta of beautiful intellect, body, and spirit. Let's pray that Meade can keep up the pace.
Just remember, Professor: Don't dial the dog, and don't spade or neuter the iPhone.

'Course if it was some posters here (______insert names) you'd be relieved.

Michael H: Thanks for noticing. Here in USDA Zone 6b we apply a dry granular high nitrogen lawn fertilizer (20-10-10) in early March. A second, lighter application goes down 4 weeks later. The only other fertilization for the lawn is done in late October after core aerating.
We mow as close as possible without scalping before new growth begins in the spring. Overseed the entire lawn with a blend of annual and perennial ryegrasses right after the first mowing and then raise the height on the mower blades to 3" leaving clippings to decompose and enrich the soil. If you have dead or thin patches, just overseed with the ryegrass seed and rake in. I hope that helps.

Meade, thanks! I've already done the early March application, and the first mowing (short, as you recommended) should be done this week - I live 450 miles of Cincinnati - with blade set low.
Aside: Does anyone other than fertilizer companies do lawn care blogging?

Althouse, it's wonderful to see you looking so happy and relaxed. Now that you have had a chance to get to know a dog, I'm sure you are beginning to understand why your readers so strongly encouraged you to get one of your own!
I can't remember the doggie's name but I bet he knows you well enough now to give you your own enthusiastic greeting when you come for a visit. Isn't it great?
After three years without a dog my husband and I have two (older) adoptees. They are like small happy children in their lust for life and enjoyment of simple things like meals & walks. I'm sure that your new springtime love is helping you to have that same attitude.
Meade, you don't have to deal with St. Augustine like we do down here in Florida.
St. Augustine Grass, the Friend to Mr. Weed and Mr. Chinch Bug. Nothing really gets going until the Tropical season down here.
I got more brown patches than I know what to do with. Sadly, I think I'm past Weed N' Feed time, but I'm open to suggestions. Perhaps overseeding in the fall as you do up there?
It's nice grass once it grows in, though. Bahama is much nicer, however.
