The vegetable will respond to you.
ADDED: They get close to but never articulate the central problem: The commercial — aired on the Superbowl — would prompt innocent children to do comical things with vegetables that would, to adults, have sexual meaning.
Here's the actual PETA commercial, by the way. Did they ever really mean it to air? With this controversy, obviously, they get the publicity and they don't have to pay. Maybe I should have ignored them, but Whoopi commanded my attention.

From now on I will really feel uncomfortable around Vegans. Who knows how many perverts I have stood right next to at the produce section at Publix? And at restaurants who will ever know whether or not the steamed veggies are sloppy seconds (Creamed spinach?). At least it's good to know that Vegans will not have offspring, will they??? Thanks for the wake up story Professor.

I'm visiting the produce aisle of my local supermarket to get one of those "green jobs" from a head of lettuce.
3.7 seconds is my maximum tolerance setting for Whoopi Goldberg.
After that, I need to spray bleach in my face to remove the awful burning sensation. And it's far too early for a cabernet.
The PETA people use a pumpkin in their commercial. What are the mechanics of sex with a pumpkin? Frankly I'm stumped. Any help from the sexually adventurous veggie crowd would be appreciated. TIA.

They start out being on the side of PETA, Whoopi can't even say their name, and how silly it is that a commercial like this should be banned, and by the end it seems they are all agreeing that the commercial is silly and inappropriate.
Meanwhile they get to make all kinds of easy innuendos.
This is like a woman's version of "The Man Show" without the subtleties.
It'd be much funnier if Ellen Degeneres called Gladys about it.
Ugh, Joy Behar's voice is like nails on a blackboard, and her manner is so smug. Can't stand her. Whoopi is alright though, can't think why she's slumming with that awful show.

Of all the girl's names in the world, 'Joy' turned out to be the most inappropriate name for that woman her parents could have chosen.
But 'Obnoxious' is often too hard for little kids to spell.
Oh, it'll warp the children!
Get over it! My parents saw way worse things than that when they were children. My father saw the aftermath of at least one murder, while my mother regularly saw her father use my grandmother for a punching bag. Yet, somehow, my parents grew up to be normal. I think your children can withstand a bit of crudity.
Children making crude jokes is not a new phenomenon. My father heard material worthy of Andrew Dice Clay on street corners nearly fifty years ago. After all, why else would children imitate the commercial other than for laughs?
Are vegans idiots? Yes. But that doesn't mean we need to be idiots by playing into PETA's shock strategy.
This clip makes a nice pairing with Whoopi's endorsement of the Tracy Jordan Meat Machine. Can't find a video for that, sadly.
So, what elements put the PETA ad beyond Paris Hilton's Carl's Junior ad, which I do believe ran during a Superbowl?
I should say "Paris Hilton's fabulous Carl's Junior ad".
The Expatriate's take is an interesting one. Just wondering how far one would take that.
