At the Doomstruck Café...

Doom

... gah... why did I ever leave the house? Cheer me up, man. It's like a Bergman movie out here.

I spoke with my mother today who said it is brutal out there.

I just got from Barney's and got some major bargains.

It was war in there with all the queens grabbing for the frocks.

You never want to stand between a queen and a cute blouse on sale at Barney's. The bitches would do anything for that fitted Marc Jacobs tee or an amazing priced pair of Citizens Jeans.

Now I am making all kinds of cool free music from Itunes.

I am putting together all my files.

I am really into the Brad Miller tribal house podcasts. Those podcasts get me moving at the gym.

Then there is the walking with the rare clumbers file.

The shopping file. The working file. The yoga file. And tons more.

The ipod was one of the most amazing things ever invented. I fucking love it.

I went to see a local production of "It's a Wonderful Life" today.
It was very well done!

I couldn't get over how good the man that played Potter was. Just spot on for that part. And at the curtain call, to the delight of the audience, he wheeled himself out with a really grumpy look on his face. Made everyone laugh, and then he gave us a wink. Too cute.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Hey, Titus, did you watch that movie on MTV about Britney Spears?

Palladian বলেছেন...

"Cheer me up, man. It's like a Bergman movie out here."

More like the final maze scene in "The Shining" except during the day.

TitusCauseHeCanCanCan বলেছেন...

Of course I did Althouse.

By the way who is Ricky Ticky Tavi? Barney's had some really cool mixed version of a song about the story of Ricky Ticky Tavi on the ipod today. I have to get that song.

They also had a female singer do an updated version of Ring on Fire on the player today. It was brillant.

Have you watched Summer Heights High Althouse? If not, it is on HBO on Demand. If you are bored you should watch.

I know this is going to sound totally gross and totally nasty but I am going to make a Chef Boyardee pizza for dindin.

Don't you all remember making those as little kids with your parents?

There is something about those pizzas that I love. Gross, right?

I also love Tombstone pizzas. Tombstone pizzas can be found in any store in the state of Wisconsin. They are nonexistent here.

Speaking of The Shining, Estes Park used to be the cutest little laid back town. Now it's total gridlock straight through its center. I shudder at the thought of it. I just saw the opening to that movie yesterday, a long lonely mountain drive and thought, "it sure isn't like that now."

But be of good cheer. Sub zero weather is the perfect excuse to whip out a batch of scones, here's a method so easy any non-sconer could do it quickly and with ease.

The Donovan song?

WTF?

Cedarford বলেছেন...

Gah! is right. There are pretty snowfall events, and uglifying snowfall events. Your most recent snowfall does reproduce Bergman's depressing landscapes.

(My lesson from Bergman's flicks was to focus on the blondes, not the dialogue or the bleak environment - otherwise you will be as tempted to belt down a few hard ones after the movie as Swedes seem to be driven to each winter day)

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Riki Tiki Tavi.

I hope it's that.

Speaking of "Gah!".

God, how the epicures like Titus have fallen along with their 401Ks.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

You should buy this whole album and listen to it a lot.

So, anyway, Titus, you saw the Britney film. What did you think? Do you agree with me that she's angry with Madonna and she kind of tried to hide it and kind of didn't?

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Also, Titus, what did you think about what Kathie Griffin said about it (the Britney movie) on Leno?

George M. Spencer বলেছেন...

These are beastly wooden puzzle sculptures....all in the shapes of different animals. When you take each apart, inside you find a different surprise. Made by a Virginia craftsman.

These wind-up thingies are fun, too.

And everyone needs a blessing ring.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

And yes, I did watch a few episodes of "Summer Heights High." Very good, but watching 3 in a row wasn't a good idea.

Should go back to it.

I've been rewatching "Extras" on HBO on Demand. I love that.

Althouse --
My rule, for when I used to live where the sun went down at four and it was bleak day after day was: no Bergman between mid-October and late March, maybe April if I'd had a bad winter. In the summer you can leave the movie theatre and the world seems just fine out there. What a relief. In the winter, well, you think he's got it just right.

Darcy বলেছেন...

Love those puzzle sculptures. Thanks, Original George.

Cedarford বলেছেন...

Althouse - Your link didn't work for me.

Rikki Tikki Tavi is from Rudyard Kipling's stories.

http://www.classicshorts.com/stories/rtt.html

Neat little critters. Fun to watch a pack of them on the move looking for mice, lizards, fallen fruit, unpenned chickens.. Considered vermin in Hawaii where they were an "unwanted exotic" outside their native India. Mainly because they are such fun-loving, quick, efficient little killers of other little Hawaiian wildlife - as well as rural Hawaiian chickens.

Trooper York বলেছেন...

I thought Rikki Tikki Tavi was the original girl from Hairspray who had her own talk show?

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Link

Try that.

(Sorry.)

It's an old Donovan song. Not one of his very best, but good and it's nice to hear Donovan.

I loved Chef Boy-ar-dee Pizza when I was a teenager too.

What do you want on your tombstone? I like that ad campaign.

I'm working tonight, and as part of that I have to take a bunch of photographs. Although it's a short distance from home to this site, my camera lens got all foggy and I had to let it warm up before I could use it! Also, my hair froze, since I was running late and left the house with it damp. Ah, winter!

However, I do think the Mississippi is pretty when it starts to freeze. All of a sudden, the Illinois side seems even closer, as if you could just zip across in ice stakes (which I suppose you could, now that I think about it; it's not very wide here). And the various lights, holiday and otherwise, including those of driving-past cars, cast such pretty colors and sparkles across the service.

If one must freeze one's ass off, which apparently I must, at least there's the consolation of a feast for the eyes!

reader_iam বলেছেন...

Ice SKATES. You could make it across on ice STAKES, but I can't imagine it would be zippy, and it might even be dangerous.

reader_iam বলেছেন...

Ice STAKES is what my hair looked like before it thawed this evening. Scary.

reader_iam বলেছেন...

SURFACE, not SERVICE. WTF? And I'm not even drinking at this shindig, because I'm working.

Brain freeze? Damn, it's cold out.

Palladian বলেছেন...

See, I'm odd. I love bleak, depressing weather. Give me grey, cloudy skies and freezing cold and hard, crusty snow and misery and I'm a happy man.

reader_iam বলেছেন...

You might hate this, Palladian, but ... you have something in common with Woody Allen, it seems.

Meade বলেছেন...

This should cheer you up, man. I donated a pint of Type O to the local blood bank this morning.

So the next time you're in town watching the entire depressing Ingmar Bergman oeuvre, leading you to slit your wrists...

you're good!

নামহীন বলেছেন...

Cheer you up? Okay.

নামহীন বলেছেন...

And there's a little yellow man in my head.

Silly boy.

Palladian বলেছেন...

"You might hate this, Palladian, but ... you have something in common with Woody Allen, it seems."

Are you kidding? I'm a Woody Allen fan since high school.

As another of my idols, Glenn Gould said:

"My moods bear an inverse relationship to the degree of sunlight on a given day..." "Behind every silver lining there's a cloud, I tell myself when things threaten to get bright."

Donna B. বলেছেন...

I miss being cold, miss the joy of the contrast of warmth. I love snow. I loved winter in Colorado, but hate it in the south.

reader_iam বলেছেন...

Now this could be fun: a potential point of agreement--the evilness of the media--between Jeremiah Wright and those who most despise him:

"Jesus said upon this rock I will build--listen to the promise--my church," he said. "And the gates of Hell--listen to the promise--the gates of Hell--neither ABC nor CNN--the gates of Hell--neither Hannity nor O'Reilly--the gates of Hell--neither Time, Time magazine, Chicago Sun Times, Chicago Tribune ... the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. Nothing will be impossible with God."

TitusCauseHeCanCanCan বলেছেন...

Sorry I didn't respond I went to yoga tonight.

No the Ricky Ticky Tavi song was not the Donovan song it was a song with part spoken word and was about the story that Cedarford referred to. It was a totally cool song and told the story of Ricky Ticky Tavi. It was totally cool and totally weird and I now I have to have it.

As far as the Britney movie I actually liked it. She is totally pissed at Madonna. After the movie I ended up playing all her videos on ondemand. You have to admit that Baby One More Time video is pretty fucking good. Pure Gold. Brillant move by all the (likely) men who put that thing together.

I must find that Ricky Ticky Tavi song.

And...
I fell in to a burning ring of fire
I went down down down
A ring of fire
A ring of fire-that's catchy shit.

Lasty, my food choices have always been ghastly Cedarford. You can't take the Wisconsin out of the girl.

TitusCauseHeCanCanCan বলেছেন...

FYI-Ricki Ticki Tavi is a mongoose.

reader_iam বলেছেন...

In religion-driven news.

reader_iam বলেছেন...

Ought I cross-post that comment in a recent auto-related Althouse thread? I mean, it's so synergistic, isn't it?

reader_iam বলেছেন...

Anyway, cars parked between choir and altar are just, well, parking, with which I'm sure Krugman would agree, due to the geographical forces that [him]** and [his] colleagues have discussed.

[**In striving to be faithful to the original, I therefore faithfully translated the corresponding objective case Krugman used, transcending my own bias toward the nominative in this instance.]

Ain't we got fun?--and no teasin' 'bout it!

নামহীন বলেছেন...

Yes, reader, but do you realize that alter is really a grade crossing, and my train's coming through, straight from the auto thread? Get that car off the tracks before it gets squashed by the locomotive or something!

And don't let any teenage girls near it, either!
