"We need a commission!... We need to fire somebody!... Get me Andrew Cuomo!... I want ten more debates!... But let's postpone the one we've scheduled!... Do you get the impression a McCain presidency would be a bit exhausting?..."
Mickey mocks McCain.

Medicaid?
Medicare?
Social Security?
Small Business Administration
FEMA
HUD
The Veterans Administration
Food and Nutrition Service
Unemployment Services
Homeless Assistance
Center For Disease Control
Paralyzed Veterans of America
And on, and on, and on...
It was directed at somebody who couldn't understand how it could cost 5 million dollars to plan and pull off a debate of this magnitude.
Still doesn't make any sense. That's just one more thing that wouldn't cost any money?
I don't really care, personally, but could it be that they are upset about some sort of lost revenue? That would be my first assumption. I suppose they would have some sort of tech support and police presence. It would help if you provided some facts to go with your assertion. Or maybe a link.
As for the economy, the point is that it very well COULD crash monday. Maybe it wouldn't, but we shouldn't just ignore it. Nobody likes any of this. I wish people hadn't been complete idiots for years and I wish we hadn't bounced from bubble to bubble in the last 10 years, but we have and now we have to deal with it. I think any senator who didn't want to be around to find out anything they could and help in any way they could is an idiot and a coward.
Shanna, You think Americans are required to use Medicaid and Medicare benefits?
Really?
And you know what?
If you don't want to collect your Social Security, you can say nay to that, too.
See, you learn something new every day.
Shanna, So you think this debate thing in Mississippi was really just some kind of money-making gambit on the part of the University?
You can't be this dense.
Michael,
This is exactly where you and I differ. I would NEVER say I was showing love BECAUSE I favor these programs. And, since we all share more or less equally when it comes to government programs, you could NEVER use this as an example that liberals show more love than conservatives.
I think it's two different things to say (1) I show love by supporting government programs, and (2) I show love by doing this, this, and this.
I think liberals tend to show love the first way, and conservatives tend to show love the second.
Liberals mostly show love by supporting (1) with words while Republicans get stuck supporting both (1) and (2) with actual money.
The tax system is, after all, enormously progressive, and wealthier Americans -- i.e., the ones who actually pay income tax -- are mostly Republicans.
"I think any senator who didn't want to be around to find out anything they could and help in any way they could is an idiot and a coward."
Then where the hell has McCain been?
No press conferences in six weeks?
Visits a solar panel company two days ago and never even mentions the economy?
Flip-flops in one week from saying the economy is fundamentally sound, no bail out for AIG to full on "crisis mode"??
Says he's suspending his campaign, but really isn't?
With respect to social security and Medicare, I think the point was that while yes, you do not have to take advantage of them when you are eligible for them, you are required to pay into them and you may not recover the money you have paid in.
rev thinks the Republicans are paying for everything.
Good grief...
*And Donn...FORGET IT, DUDE.
Let's see the top 2% pay 95% of the taxes, very unfair.
Michael:
*And Donn...FORGET IT, DUDE.
I know, Michael, it's hard to be held accountable for the words we use.
Hey, in 1999 the NYT was pretty prophetic.
alex thinks the top 2% are ALL Republicans.
Geeezzz...
"Can I assume no one here, and no one in your family or circle of friends will be taking advantage of those nasty "socialistic" programs like Medicare or Medicaid or Social Security...?"
Well done Tovaritsch! Learn the glorious truth the Party Demokratiya have kept in Mikal.
Those opposing Grand Socialist Plans are the ИДИОТ, idiots all.
Is true, friend. When party makes illegal the private medicine, all are implicated in using the State and none can ever be free indiviudal capitalist running dogs again.
The death by a thousand cuts, eh comrade? So wise are you.
Pogo, I have a feeling you'll be the very first in line for the mental services.
I love the way you deride programs that help your fellow Americans.
That is, if you are an American.
No, liberals love the *idea* of loving people
How can people be so heartless
How can people be so cruel
Easy to be hard
Easy to be cold
How can people have no feelings
How can they ignore their friends
Easy to be proud
Easy to say no
And especially people
Who care about strangers
Who care about evil
And social injustice
Do you only
Care about the bleeding crowd?
How about a needing friend?
I need a friend
How can people be so heartless
You know I'm hung up on you
Easy to give in
Easy to help out
And especially people
Who care about strangers
Who say they care about social injustice
Do you only
Care about the bleeding crowd
How about a needing friend?
I need a friend
How can people have no feelings
How can they ignore their friends
Easy to be hard
Easy to be cold
Easy to be proud
Easy to say no
And liberals haven't changed since the 60's, except many of them don't have their hair anymore.
The lefty trolls said ...
"An Althouse first! A post critical of McCain."
"This absolutely is a first for Ann. I don't recall an anti-McCain post either before this."
*sigh*
But I suppose that's the beauty of Althouse. We see our own reflection in the mirror of cruel neutrality.
"Obama is going back because Bush asked, and he's the President."
And possibly because it is his freaking JOB? He's a Senator and the Senate is going to be voting on an historic bill that might affect not only the boobs that voted him into office, but likely the rest of the entire United States not to mention the world.
Shouldn't that take precedence over meaningless sound bites at some stupid media controlled debate?
Wow!! What a concept. Doing your duty and doing your job.
"That is, if you are an American."
Da, Mikal, like you I am the hyphenated Amerikkkan, proud of my country for very first time in life.
The Party Demokratiya is soon to achieve the goals:
* Achieve the Four Modernisations
* Smash the Gang of GOP
* Professors of youth colleges participate in education of young generation in revolutionary, community organizing, and working traditions of the Americanski peoples as shown by Alinsky!
Blessings, Mikal, on all your labor here.
Arturius
I've been on many a Right wing blogs and you are the first to say that Social Security and Medicare are not socialist programs. Interesing. Maybe we are getting somewhere when Republcans like social programs.
I'm rather new to this blog but wasn't under the impression it was right wing although it does appear to have a more balanced number of liberal vs conservative commenters.
Just for the record, I don't consider myself Republican or Democrat and will split my ticket more oft than not. I lean conservative in some issues, liberal in others.
What about this bail out plan? If that isn't a form of socialism then I don't know what is.
I don't disagree. I'm more than ambivalent over the whole deal but unfortunately I don't know enough of the technical details as to whether or not doing nothing would have graver consequences than the bail out.
First of all, that is precisely what Bush and company have been saying over and over again, as an excuse when we went in and an excuse for why we haven't left.
Michael, I'm afraid your confusing Iraq rhetoric with Afghanistan. We're not to my knowledge spending $10 billion a month in Afghanistan as your post implies. Further, I don't believe we had excuses to go into Afghanistan but rather justification as a result of 9/11.
But you could say the same thing about elements and forces alive and well in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan, Syria, Iran, North Korea and even Russia...all represent threats to America.
Yes you certainly can although the problem is that none of those countries were the home base of the organization that attacked us.
I'm not quite certain what you're driving at here. Are you suggesting that we hole up and construct fortress America or simply shrug off Al Qaeda and hope for the best? Since Senator Obama favors an increased presence in Afghanistan over Iraq can I assume you also disagree?
Pogo: That's a hilarious character you have going there! (I too enjoy to speak russianly).
I suggest you keep it up until Mikhail begs you to stop.
