"Anyway, I wake up on this day and think – oh, this used to be Poland’s holiday."

How would you feel if the holiday you celebrated as an innocent child were now discredited?

This doesn't affect me, but surely there are a lot of white Southerners who grew up with heroes, iconic events, and possibly a holiday or two that are now severely downplayed.

Being of pretty much full blooded Polish ethnicity myself I'm fond of celebrating September 12 as a celebration of my Polish heritage.

09/12/1683 was the date of the Battle of Vienna (Odsiecz Wiedenskawhen) Polish king Jan Sobieski defeated the Turks at Vienna and saved Western Civilization from the Moslem hordes. So remember that because of a Pollack leading and a bunch of big guys on big horses with wings on thier backs is why hot Euro chicks get to wear thongs instead of burkas.

You're welcome.

I feel that way about Washington's birthday.

But then he's just another dead white guy so what's the big deal.

This doesn't affect me either (too much, I'm only half polish), but why aren't blacks more upset about having Christmas taken away from them?

Ah. I get it. When oh when will those zany blacks ever learn?

Like all other honest, hard-working, God-fearing Americans, I’m still trying to come to grips with the idea there are foreigners out there proud of their countries.

Somthing like this happens to me every year around the beginning of December. I start thinking, "what day is this, what am I forgetting?"

Then I remember it's the anniversary of my first marriage, and I resolve never to remember it again.

In the UK, we don't have any discredited holidays. Even unofficial memorial days like St. David's on 1 March are still going strong.

This is the price one pays for a successful nation with an un-PC society.

BTW, in Brazil they have not one but two independence days: one from the Portuguese empire, the other from the monarchy into republic.

If I were Polish, I'd just celebrate the 22 July one anyway.

Cheers,
Victoria

It's quaint. Like Kwanzaa.
