Since Glenn mentioned my name here — "my version of Althousian cafe-photoblogging" — I thought I'd take this:
(Enlarge.) Actually, it was a 2-café day, so there's also this:
(Enlarge.) This is still Madison. I'm going to L.A. soon, as noted here — and thanks for all the great suggestions — but this exaggerated caféitude is all found right here in Madison, Wisconsin.

Dear Ann:
It bugs me when bloggers refer to each other using just a first name. Am I wrong?
He's been focused on Althouse in recent days. Rightly so.
Oh, all that precious hardwood is absolutely darling!!!! Hardwood in every possible nook and cranny.... contributes, superbly, to the "rugged" ambience.
On the other hand, I don't see any placemats or tablecloths.
Cutlery, stem-- and flatware lacking also. Perhaps they've taken the otherwise adorable "rustic" theme a little too far ?
Your new? sub-hed....

Gross me out.
It's temporary. Say something better and I'll switch it out for the new. That's my plan.
CAFE HABITUES
The new ones come
To the place of newness --
New and thrilling conversations
About how to make their way
In this new and thrilling place -- the world.
"Let your haven be your heaven."
That's what Kerouac said and
That's what the old ones come for -- a haven.

Are you going to have an LA movie marathon before you go, to get in the mood?
Sunset Boulevard, Repo Man, Chinatown, Day of the Locust, Valley Girl, Less Than Zero...
Glenn should stick to just talking about photography since that is as far as his photographic talent goes.
Ann, however, can talk the talk AND walk the walk!!
I'm curious Ann - do you routinely do much post camera processing or are most of the pix you post here just straight out of the camera?
So many of your photos have such crisp vibrant colors I find so delightful I was just curious if your arts background helped to juice them up a bit after the fact.
Ger, I always tweak the photographs. I only use iPhoto, though. I'm doing very easy things, and the key is just looking at the results and trying to get it right. I usually turn up the contrast. Often I just hit a button labeled "enhance." I often lower the "temperature" and the "exposure."
And I often hit a button called "boost color" and I move the "tint" slider.
Also I crop.
What to pack:
I'm sure Althouse will come up with some jaunty ensembles. I imagine the chic LA wardrobe she has planned includes lots of tennis skirts and cigarette pants. From racquet club to dinner party circuit.....Althouse is determined to set the LA fashion world abuzz !
What we won't be seeing on Althouse is any garments sans sleeves. I'm sure she'll save her mundane, and unflattering, tank-tops, for the Mid-West.
The convivial, festive nature of LA demands much more fanciful garb !
"...And death pursues even the man who flees, spares not the hamstrings or cowardly backs of battle-shy youths."
Ohio also has gatherings of intellectuals.
Yes, might Professor Althouse do a little Vlog ...
....where we can all watch , as she loads her cute little LA ensembles (one-by-one, still in the dry-cleaning plastic) into her glamourous luggage !!!
This is an important trip for Althouse, and no doubt she's spending hours on end trying on racks upon racks of apparel and sportsware....
And what music to pack by? I suggest Toto's 'Rosanna' album.
I've been in that first cafe!
Fun memory of my 2 days in Madison last Fall.

Holy crema, Batman! That's a wonderful example of coffee richness they gave you, Ann.
I went to my local Starbucks just now, and came out with a latte tasting of ditchwater. Ech.
I don't know why anyone in Madison would go to a Starbucks. So many other better choices. I wonder if one of the 600 Starbucks closing is in Madison. The one across the street from West Towne? In Monona near Red RObin?
It bugs me when bloggers refer to each other using just a first name. Am I wrong?
AJ, I find it cold to refer to Althouse as "Althouse" (I know she doesn't mind), so her usage of "Glenn" didn't bug me, for one.
It would've been downright weird if she had called him "Reynolds", or a touch plastic if she had said Instapundit.
I think it's okay if you have an established relationship with another blogger.
Cheers,
Victoria
Dishwater Latte -- it's on the menu, isn't it?
I have a Starbucks gift card tucked into my wallet; got it in April when the book reps were on campus hawking their wares and handing out goodies. There's a Starbucks on campus and I haven't managed to make it over there for a cup of Dishwater Latte.
OK...if nobody has suggested this yet...if you truly want to experience Los Angeles, you need to go to Tommy's Burgers, at the corner of Beverly and Rampart, at about 3:00 A.M. on a Friday or Saturday night.
Spoiled rich kids from USC, members of assorted street gangs, strays from Beverly Hills, an occasional movie or sports star, police, those working a night shift.....anybody and everybody who is a true Angelino...and the best chili burgers in the world.
Bring your camera.
Skeletonizing? Cruel impunity? Sacred Cows?
That's a mixed Amazon Hindu Klingon metaphor if I ever heard one.
Something a little more upbeat might be good...

superb
Ann, you need an ad blocker on your browser in a really bad way. I was shocked to see the ads on the Instapundit screen you display above. It's been so long for me I'd forgotten they were there.
Cropped for your pleasure.
ann,
you're mba and your nikon camera are way too sexy, way too sexy. That's like flashing bare midriffs at your age.
money/skin all the same filth?
Ann, this post is proof that you've become the Judith Hearne of the Intertubes.
Ann,
doesn't your camera support RAW files? adjusting them in Aperture would bring out more color and management capabilities. I thought iPhoto was more for amateur photos and cheap digitals.
Aperture would only be 1/8th the cost of your camera, anyway.
