I deplore this post.

I was just checking Memeorandum to see what people are blogging about right now, and suddenly everything seems to be at a taste level below the standards of this blog. For your protection, I am collecting these items in one post.

1. "Jon Stewart Awards Obama 'Dick Move of the Week.'"

2. "Randi Rhodes Quits Air America Rather Than Apologize For Hillary Clinton 'F*cking Whore.' Remark."

3. Obama says: "I don’t want you to think I’m getting fresh or anything."

4. "Is that really a naked woman in Dick Cheney's sunglasses?"

There now. I'm terribly sorry.

"Is that really a naked woman in Dick Cheney's sunglasses?"

Come on, if she's wearing Dick Cheney's sunglasses, then she's not completely naked, right?Don't be such prudes.

What, too obvious?

OK, I just watched The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover.

That movie is amazing. I remember seeing it in a theater in Milwaukee when I was like 16.

The costumes, the music by Michael Nyman (of the Piano), Helen Mirren.

It really is a fabulous romp.

I remember going to that movie -- it was supposed to be arty -- and then being ashamed to be seen leaving it. Good costumes though.

Oh, Titus. Some of us who are Helen Mirren fans have deplored/loved that movie for years. On the other hand, as in so many of her movies, she does show up stark naked. Helen Mirren is the only actress I know whom you don't mind seeing in full frontal nudity (not one little bit), but you want to get back to the closeup head shots so you can see her act.

When acting trumps a sexy, naked body even for someone as testosterone-poisoned as I am, you know you're dealing with a genuine actress and nothing less.

Actually, it looks like Helen Mirren in Dick Cheney's sunglasses. I think he was just watching one of her movies on his iPod when that photo was snapped.

Jean Paul Gauthier did the costumes. The music is amazing, of course I just purchased it for my flight home. A women gets a fork stuck in her face. And the color, sets and restaurant are really fierce. The food is pretty intense too.

Helen Mirren has major balls in that movie. She is fully naked for long periods of time, gets the shit beat out of her, does it in a bathroom of a restaurant with a stranger and eventually has the thief eat her lover before she shoots him.

I have new found respect for her. That bitch doesn't give a shit and I love that.

What more is there to life, really?

Giving out concert tickets during a Bill Clinton speech at a state university is not a dick move. A dick move is having Bill Clinton make a speech at a state university, and not paying the bill even three months later:
University of California Davis Attn: Cashier’s Office 5,486.42

California's state universities are suffering from a budget crunch. Please Bill, take some of that Canadian miner's money and pay your bills. The state of California did not make the Missus a campaign contribution.

I hope Indiana University got the money up front.

The dick in question is probably the German for thick, at least back when they were designing English.

Though I found her conduct and remarks distatsteful, I am glad that Randi Rhodes refused to apologize for her remarks. Since when do we owe politicians, servants of the people, an apology for telling the truth- even if it is in poor taste. If she had made the remarks about a Republican there would have been no controversy.

The real radio story was Artie tendering his resignation after a physical fight on yesterday's Howard Stern show.

KCFleming म्हणाले...

I thought The Cook, The Thief etc was the absolute worst film I have ever seen. It radiated pure evil. It is in fact the only movie I have ever contemplated walking out of. I kept thinking something good will be up just next, but no.

Execrable pseudo-art with a black heart; a Jeffrey Dahmer YouTube video, albeit a "well-acted" one. It still pisses me off.

And won't someone please kill American Beauty?

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

Sad about Artie. Looks like Stern had to fear his own liability, since Artie refused to say he wouldn't do it again.

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

The only movie I've walked out on was My Blue Heaven with Rick Moranis and Steve Martin. Totally unfunny and a waste of time.

My Mom walked out on Network -- the language got to her.

Meade म्हणाले...

Little Miss Sunshine was below my standards for watchability so I got up and left. Very few comedies are funny. I also walked out of American Beauty. Themes of cool detached nihilism rub me the wrong way.

Titusis going home म्हणाले...

I agree with you Meade.

Both American Beauty and Little Miss Sunshine tried too hard to be all special.

Titusis going home म्हणाले...

I walked out on Victor Victoria

Meade -
What did you think of No Country For Old Men? I was enjoying it up until maybe the last thirty minutes, when I realized that the movie wasn't about justice at all.

Meade म्हणाले...

Sofa King,
I thought the theme of random evil and injustice was well established at the beginning of the movie - during the gas station scene - so I was expecting more of the same. A well made movie as it did not dishonestly attempt to manipulate my emotions the way American Beauty and Little Miss Sunshine did.
