One hit wonders don't count. This competition is limited to those who've had at least 20 hits. Average chart ranking for the winner(s): 12!
(Guess before you look at the answer at the link.)

Has to be the Beatles. So few of their singles flopped.
It would have been Michael Jackson if he'd retired in about 1993.
My guess: The Rascals
Now that I've peeked my only reaction is... They were always taken for granted, and probably underrated. What they did, they did extremely well. What they couldn't do, they didn't try to do.
On the other hand, you can't rule out payola as a factor. Drugola is probably more like it.
But I recently put about eight of their songs on my MP3 player and they hold up pretty well. Especially the one with the title that's a paradox.
I never would have guessed that answer. But, having peeked, that's what happes when a group provides a small sample while others provide much, much larger ones.
I guessed the Beegees...it seemed like all of their singles went to #1.
But they killed their chances with a 40 year career....
I guessed the Spice Girls. Nope.
I muttered, "Had to be either the Beatles or the BeeGees," as I clicked the link. Shazzam! What a shocker. Still have some of those 45s lying around somewhere.
Average would mean that for the number of songs that they made many more were hits. You could have 10 songs and 8 are hits and beat the avereage.
I'm guessing.... without looking... the BeeGees or Supremes?
I didn't guess the right answer and based on the formula many groups that went on longer (e.g. Beatles) would have not made it. My first concert (1971) on the first night I smoked pot.
