"Waitress."

Oscar writes about it, so I don't have to. You know, you cannot trust movie reviews that were written after the director was murdered.

I saw this movie a couple weeks ago, and though I almost never go to the movies, and I like to use what raw material I can, I have not blogged about this movie. Let me just try to reconstruct the dialogue I remember as we left the theater:
Well?

That was one steaming pile of man-hating.

Oh, I thought maybe you liked it.

Those ladies in front of us loved it. I hated it. I mean I liked the close-ups of the pies and the way the pies were all named after her emotions, but everything else... Hey, look, those two guys saw the movie together. I don't see how any self-respecting male could go to see this movie unless a woman made him see it.

Yeah, really.

Finally, an answer to my question.

You also can't trust articles about the murder of Adrienne Shelley that fail to mention that she was murdered by an illegal immigrant who feared she would report him to La Migra.

WHAT articles are you referring to? I've read many accounts of the woman's murder and all have reported exactly who killed her and why he did it.

Please post links to the articles YOU read.

P.S. And I've yet to read a bad review of the film.

Ann,

Thank you very, very much.

I forced my husband to see this one - grovelling to him beforehand, but promising the reviews had indicated a sharp and unusual chick flick.

I had no idea in advance about the tragic back story to the film itself - which so idiotically corrupted the notices.

At around the 30 minute mark, I began to feel a prickling suspicion that the loaded, recidivist tosh on the screen was not about to be brilliantly subverted - but that the film was in fact playing straight with a premise that managed to be simultaneously anti-male and sexist.

I haven't loathed a film to this extent for some time. (And if anyone wants to see Andy Griffith could really do, try Elia Kazan's A Face in the Crowd. It was made in 1957, apparently before cinema ran out of ideas...)

Well, let's look at the differences in reporting. Here is the NYP and it's article about the murder.

http://www.nypost.com/seven/11082006/news/regionalnews/actress_set_off_illegals_killer_rage_by_calling_him_s_o_b__regionalnews_larry_celona__murray_weiss_and_dan_mangan.htm

As you can see even in the headline of the article it states he's an illegal and in the article itself it says so. Now, look at the Reuters article. One sentence mentions that she was murdered by a "construction worker" and the rest is fluff.

http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=entertainmentNews&storyid=2007-05-11T174150Z_01_N10424625_RTRUKOC_0_US-WAITRESS.xml

Either you didn't read the Reuters article or you simply didn't understand the nature of how this is mostly reported. It's sort of like reading articles and reports about the rioting in France being done by mostly French "youths".
