Isn't this primarily why we have laws and ordinances -- to protect the less powerful from suffering at the hands of the more powerful and to effect behavior we agree to be less cruel and more civilized?

Those brothers were slowly and unnecessarily killing their pooch with selfish negligent "kindness." They've been fined and served notice. Consequently, they promised to change their behavior.

I doubt 'Ms Craig' is one of her nom du plumes or even guerres, though, leaving that aside, one does recall the words of novelist Martin Amis - whom I largely, though not in this instance, despise - who opined that the said lady would undoubtably be "a generous lover."

Saving a defenseless animal's life is a little more serious than the government intruding in your personal business, however. I'm sure you had no problem with their attempt to step in over Terry Schiavo.
