Post-Christmas musings about a real necklace and a virtual tiara.

Hi, everyone. Hope you had a nice yesterday, whether you experienced it as Christmas or Monday or anything else. Things were swell here. Other than that I received a necklace as a gift and then immediately proceeded to lose it! Since I didn't leave the house, the occasions for saying "It couldn't just disappear" and -- the classic -- "It didn't just get up and walk away" -- were many. It got to the point where it wasn't clear whether we were repeating the old clichés for humorous effect or whether it was nothing but the sincere expression of frustration. And now I'm blogging about it as if I think maybe my readers might have some idea where the thing is.

But you can help in another way. Start entering daily votes for me in the final round for Grande Conservative Blogress Diva. They've narrowed it down to four, not just two, which means it's not just me against Michelle Malkin. I think this is an advantage, since the vote for real conservatives is split among three, and the eccentric votes -- mine -- may be enough to beat any of three. I think I would have lain low and let Michelle have the tiara if it had been a contest between just us two. I mean, really. She's so much more the Conservative Blogress Diva than I am, don't you think?

(I'd much rather find the necklace!)

Go to where you put the blouse/sweater that you were wearing when you put on the necklace. See if it got caught on the clothes when you took them off. If that's not it, then it has to be the squirrels.

I was wearing the same clothes the whole time I had it on and realized it was gone and had to look for it.

Yes... squirrels! It is the squirrels!!

It could have fallen off, and gotten stuck somewhere on your blouse/sweater, without you sensing that it was there. Go now, and check those clothes. If you don't find it, then, yes, call Animal Control.

I know what Ruth Anne would say... .

I once had a necklace slide off my neck in similar circumstances. Believe it or not, I found it when I took down my Christmas tree. Apparently, I was reaching around or up behind the tree to put on a gift ornament, it slide off, and caught in a branch. Noiseless, of course, so I didn't hear it at the time!

Did you lean over anything into which it could slide noiselessly while you were distracted doing something else and where it would be obscured from view?

stuffed in the turkey by mistake?

taken off unthinkingly and put in a pocket, or a coat pocket?

under some paperwork that was itself moved for company?

gasp. nicked?

Wherever it is, you're bound to find stuff (the remote, the extra set of car keys et cetera) that you were looking for last month.

The nice thing, because of the "Conservation of lost junk energy" or the law of inverse proportions or some such, is the more valuable the necklace, the more other lost junk you'll find.

Or maybe that's just a function of how hard you look...

Eccentric? Don't you mean "odd"?

At this point my wife would be saying a prayer to St. Anthony and telling me not to scoff.

Amazingly, she usually finds what she lost shortly after.

Here is an insane one for you, my mother always did it and the few times she managed to convince me to do it, I will be damned if it didn't WORK.

So, here is crazy.

Go to your kitchen, grab a juice glass or any glass and turn it upside down.

Then go about your day....and wait for it to turn up within the next couple days.

I know!!! Insane. I still do it and it is probably cooincedence, but I always found what I lost.

Buy a new one (keep the receipt).
The old necklace will magically reappear.

Spree: Okay, I did that.

JohnF: "Eccentric? Don't you mean "odd"?"

LOL. You know you'll catch hell if you call me "odd." Ask Jonah.

And I've meticulously picked through:

1. The bag with the wrapping papers in it.

2. The kitchen trash can.

3. The outdoor recylcing bin. (I did leave the house once to throw out a bag of recyclables.)

I've also looked under the seat cushions and in my pockets.

Re the final round of the blogress diva contest - I think there'll be a pretty good split between Malkin and MKH. But more to the point, did you decide that my vote-demanding graphic was just too incredibly dorky? ;)

Ruth Anne: Okay. I did it.

You postgrad teachers and your ser-fisk-i-cated senses of humor. ;)

I knew it was kind of a dumbass thing, but I had the idea, it took two minutes in photoshop, and who knows - sometimes goofy stuff seems to amuse you. ;)

Don't throw out your Christmas wrapping paper or burn the trash until you look at every bit of it.

Answer to your last question: Yes. She has all the appropriate attributes and has a longer track record of successful on-line self-promotion. It definitely doesn't hurt her cause that she is currently embroiled in a high-profile disagreement with the Associated Press.
I also have the definitive answer to the question, "Where is my lost necklace?" I confidently predict it will be found in the last place you look. No need to thank me.

Did you look on the floor next to the bookcase?

I am sure you will find it. It should turn up when you least expect it. Praying to St.Anthony won't hurt either.

Although My diamond necklace went astray last year at a Charity Ball I still am holding out hope it may return to me one day.
