Vienna.

Nina's in Vienna for the weekend, and she just got a new SLR camera. Beautiful!

Really nice photos. Oh man, I can see that it's just a matter of time before I buy one of those SLR cameras.

Beautiful is the word alright. Do *you* know what kind of camera she has? I don't see it mentioned on her blog.

But I found this quote interesting: "It is said that Leon Trotsky planned the Russian Revolution from here. That’s so like Vienna – to speak proudly now of revolutions – that took place …elsewhere." Is Vienna the European city with the huge indestructible concrete towers built by the Nazis, whose occupation the Austrians acceded to so willingly?

And, sigh, I wish we could take "a swig from the barrel" at "every few stalls" here! I can't even begin to imagine the number of uptight busybodies who would object to that particular liberty.

Chuck: If you click on the pictures, you get to the Flickr page, and Flickr shows what the camera is. Actually, the first picture is with her old camera, a Sony DSC-V1. Further down are the pictures with the new camera, a Sony DSC-H1 .

Thanks, Ann! I've been using Flickr for almost a year w/out ever noticing that!

I almost posted comments on Nina's site, but then beat a hasty retreat.

But Nina if you're reading this, nice pics.

Loved the finely carved ham especially.

Not sure if it's too early for the Christkindlmarkt (around November/December), but it's never too early for the Glühwein!

Don't forget to go iceskating near the Rathaus too.

Rockenfeller Centre has nothing on them baby.

Cheers,
Victoria ("a quarter Austrian")

Victoria: why the hasty retreat?

Amazing -- I never even imagined that the food, the trees, etc are all in anticipation of Christmas. But I think you are correct: they are getting ready. Though the drinking and eating rituals have to be more Fall-related, what with the wine harvest being over, etc.

Anyway, Ann is correct about the camera. Thanks all.

I dunno...

I'm normally as bold as brass, as you've seen, Nina.

But something made me hold back when I saw all these gemütlich comments from your visitors.

I felt like an intruder, perhaps.

It's about that time, yes.

Vienna is possibly the most magical city you could want to go to, at Christmas-time (pace London, NYC, and Paris).

The "Weaner" have a certain knack for transforming an overly commercialised pseudo-religious holiday into a truly unforgettable, sweet experience.

Ahhh, the Heuriger.

There are coach tours to some of the more famous ones which spring up -- although the ones in the Prater, I am informed, are just as good.

Cheers,
Victoria
