Madison almost accidentally banned the Wienermobile!

Trying to ban one thing -- the billboard on a flatbed truck -- the Madison City Council drafted a law that would have also banned a local institution.

Unfortunately seven alders voted in favor of the legislation even after it was made apparent the law would ban the Wienermobile. The Madison politicians are much too ban happy. There are much more important things that they should be doing. Like fixing the school district or controlling the out of control property tax increases.

The WeinerMobile© is welcome in Midland, by gawd, Texas any time the head weiners want to bring it back [yes it has been here before]. Instead of banning it, we're likely to pay for their trip with our economic development fund.

Bruce: The proposed law referred to vehicles that were primarily advertising, so an ordinary truck with the brand painted on the side wouldn't have had a problem. They were dumb, but not that dumb.

Isn't this just another example of lawmakers not considering the 'natural' Law of Unintended Consequences? I think the best line in the opinion piece defines this issue: "This whole flap seems to be symbolic of the City Council's biggest flaw. Some members try to solve problems that haven't been clearly defined, hardly exist or have little to do with city government and the concerns of ordinary citizens."
