"The Tesla Cybertruck, a product that exists at the curious intersection of low-emissions global responsibility and red-pilled macho Trumpism, is done."

"Elon Musk says production will wind down around the middle of next year to make way for the future Cybercab, a putatively autonomous vehicle of much more conventional shape. Announced with a prototype in 2019, the truck became available for the 2023 model year, a timeframe that approximately parallels Musk’s public-image collapse, as he went from 'huckster with genuinely big ideas who is nonetheless annoying' to 'danger to the republic.' Everything about the Cybertruck was designed to provoke.... Like much in the Trumpist world, its styling was a smirking asshole’s answer to an actual, reasonable point of debate...."

"Smirking asshôle" pretty much describes "New York" writers.

They are all in the "lowbrow contemptible" quadrant.

rcommal বলেছেন...

As a long-term Tesla investor (since just after its initial IPO), this makes sense to me.

Peachy+2 বলেছেন...

New York Magazine can go F itself.

---- Like much in the Trumpist world, its styling was a smirking asshole’s answer to an actual, reasonable point of debate....

This is in a magazine? Can't give 'em my data so I'll have to take AA's word for it. Certainly raises one's hopes for meeting on equal grounds in the new TRUMP-free America we are now living in.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

The idea that it looked good or that it even was a truck always escaped me.

Peachy+2 বলেছেন...

Knowing when to pull the plug is just business. I thought it was groundbreaking.
Leftists don't celebrate groundbreaking - they only celebrate their D-Nazi group-think and obedient leftist loyalist religion.

Mark বলেছেন...

It always reminded me of the Simpsons episode where Homer's long lost brother is head of an automaker and he has Homer design his ideal car, which was similarly idiotic.

Peachy+2 বলেছেন...

I wanted one at first. But they do look impractical.
I'd like to own one, jack it up really high, and load it with Kathy Bates rocket launchers.

Smilin' Jack বলেছেন...

The Cybertruck was a goofy idea. Not as goofy as colonizing Mars, though.

Lazarus বলেছেন...

It looked strange and silly to me too, but it was visionary and revolutionary. Stunning and brave. We mock those who aren't willing to go out on a limb and mock those who do, when their projects don't work out.

james বলেছেন...

"...putatively autonomous" Even when they are making tertiary comments, they can't stop with their MDS syndrome. Or maybe it is just pure ignorance.

DrSquid বলেছেন...

"...projects don't work out." Don't work out? I see the hideous monstrosities everywhere. Alot of drivers love them apparently. Edsels didn't work out, Cybertrucks worked out mystifyingly well.

bagoh20 বলেছেন...

I want an electric truck of the Cybertruck's capability, and I'm ready to buy, but I never liked the styling, and I don't trust anybody but Tesla to stick with EV trucks in the near term. I got my checkbook ready, but it looks like nothing is coming to take one.

bagoh20 বলেছেন...

Where is this guy's revolutionary idea? Talk about punching up. He's punching air under Musk's ass for a paycheck.

FullMoon বলেছেন...

Tne truck is a status symbol. Far as being macho, here in silicon valley, most drivers are small Chinese women.

Josephbleau বলেছেন...

NY Mag covers Musk’s biographical arc from “annoying huckster” to “danger to the republic”. First you are a fool, then you are an evil genius, then they want to kill you.

Achilles বলেছেন...

He needs to free up capacity to build robots and robot cars.

Being able to produce tokens to make all of the robots "smart" is going to be the next major investment track.

One of life’s greatest mysteries is Tesla’s market cap.

Ten years ago:

Bro, have you seen the cyber truck? It’s the future Bro. Elon is thinking light years ahead! Buy Tesla.

Today:

Bro. Have you seen the robots bro? It’s the future Bro. Elon is thinking light years ahead. Buy Tesla. Especially after it merges with SpaceX when shareholders will have less control.

First, he was going to take over Mars. Then, he seemed to have settled for Texas. Now that that's not worked out, where could he go next? I hear South Africa is very nice at this time of year.

FredSays বলেছেন...

I’m convinced that the Cybertruck was Musk’s best practical joke; how ugly and impractical can I make an electric truck and still get sycophants to buy it?

William50 বলেছেন...

The Cybertruck is the Edsel of the 21st century.

Curious George বলেছেন...

"Ann Althouse said...
The idea that it looked good or that it even was a truck always escaped me."

Yep. I mean, I've never seen one tow or haul anything.

boatbuilder বলেছেন...

I'm puzzled that he didn't come out with a more conventionally styled cybertruck, because as bagoh says the capabilities are astonishing.
Musk said on Rogan that the cybertruck has the towing capacity of an F350 series. I don't doubt that (although I wonder what the range is). If he styled it like a "working" pickup," the "cool" factor would be a lot higher. And it would blow away the Ford F150 "Lightning;" the potential for the massive non-geek male market would be yuge. As it is it looks like a high-tech dumpster.
I seem to recall some wag joking that it doesn't really need a passenger seat, because no wife or girlfriend would be caught dead in it.

Mary Beth বলেছেন...

Initially, I thought it was funny looking, but it grew on me. I think the turning point was when I saw the video of the one that had been loaded with explosives and the vehicle contained much of the blast.

Josephbleau বলেছেন...

As of November 6, 2026, Forbes ranks Elon Musk as the world’s richest person, with an estimated net worth of $833.5 billion. Jeff Bezos is second at $380.2 billion. So Musk is simultaneously the richest and the stupidest man on earth, says democrats.

How do our geniuses here reconcile that? “Well, I don’t like the truck he made.”

In lean business you push the bounds and fail fast, then self correct. If you are not making mistakes you are accomplishing little. Perhaps he just wanted to see if people would buy a great vehicle that was ugly? It’s his money, perhaps it was a joke, it’s his money and he still has more than anyone else. But he is a pure dumbshit, not as smart as his critics.

Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ বলেছেন...

They stopped producing things that don't sell and are pivoting to selling things that don't exist. Once they merge with SpaceXSI (or whatever) they can paper over the horrendous losses and almost certain bankruptcy.

Robots were last year. This year is flying cars.

Flying robots next year. On Mars.

Rabel বলেছেন...

I'm disappointed the author didn't bring in a Hitler reference.

He covered most everything else.

FullMoon বলেছেন...

F'n genius! Stopping production will tun the cybertruck into a collectors item. Just like an Edsel, which increases in value every year.

Josephbleau বলেছেন...

“Once they merge with SpaceXSI (or whatever) they can paper over the horrendous losses and almost certain bankruptcy.”

What does that sentence even mean man? I find no information in it other than vitriol. Please explain what will almost certainly go bankrupt, is “they” Tesla? And what is a papered over bankruptcy? Does that mean they have money or not?

Mason G বলেছেন...

"What does that sentence even mean man?"

Maybe he can get AI (artificial ignorance) to craft a response. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting, though.

Craig Howard বলেছেন...

A guy who blows up billion dollar rockets to learn more about them wouldn’t think twice about discontinuing the truck he introduced to amazing fanfare just a couple years ago. He’s changing the world.

john mosby বলেছেন...

The crew of The Chosen use a cybertruck to pull wagons and film the scenes on them. The nearly silent motors don't mess up the audio. And it's easier for a truck to travel at a constant speed than any of the other possible solutions. The DP, Akis Konstantakopoulos, is a Harvard man. CC, JSM

john mosby বলেছেন...

Is Elon converting the cybertruck factory to make "technicals" to defend himself when the Dems come to seize his business - and him? Or Gundam Battle Suits?

Even better, he can turn over his trade secrets. The Dems, salivating more and more each minute, would go through a series of Get Smart doors, then open a vault, which contains a strongbox, which contains a book. Demmy greedily opens the book to find it's blank, but for one sentence on the first page:

"THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX. LOVE, ELON." CC, JSM

boatbuilder বলেছেন...

"Yep. I mean, I've never seen one tow or haul anything."
I saw one hauling a large boat last week.
It was unusual, though. My initial thought was to wonder whether the trailer hitch is standard or an option.

Josephbleau বলেছেন...

The best thing about the Tesla truck is the stainless steel outer body, like the delorian DMC 12. Detroit would never do it because they want the body to rust out so you need to buy a new one. These trucks will last forever.

I see quite a few of them in the big cities, but there are also quite a few that I see around town, and a higher density of them in my neighborhood. Tesla sedans, too. Quite a few custom paint jobs. I think they're a status symbol too, but not just of wealth.

I've never been tempted, because they are range bound, but I might be if I was a short-distance commuter. Not a cybertruck though. They'll become a collector's oddity once they're out of production, but good luck figuring out how to keep one on the road.

My almost 80 year old hot rod is coming along nicely and I'll be able to fix it myself.

My son owns a CYBERTRUCK. I was at first put off by its size and weird appearance. BUT now I love the CYBERTRUCK. IT is the best car I have ever driven—FSD included.. I had planned to replace my TESLA Model Y with a CYBERTRUCK—riding in the CYBERTRUCK is so comfortable it is like sitting in your den. It is so safe you are fearless on highways. In flash floods (we live in New Orleans) the CYBERTRUCK can be elevated 3 different heights. It is bullet proof (we live in New Orleans). It is a powerhouse. TESLA has promised to maintain spare parts and service will continue support. My son plans to keep his CYBERTRUCK forever!

Aggie, there is a guy who lives near me that has a half dozen Deloreans that he drives around to keep them healthy. I see the cybertruck much the same.

Tesla is still trading at roughly 196x forward earnings, despite shrinking margins. EVs are no longer the shiny new thing they once were, so now it’s robots and Cybercabs providing the next growth narrative to justify its nosebleed valuation.

But there’s a bigger financial story here than simply merging SpaceX and Tesla. Musk appears to be consolidating his business empire into an interconnected ecosystem: SpaceX and Starlink provide commercial revenue, Tesla brings manufacturing and energy infrastructure, and xAI supplies the AI ambitions underpinning much of the collective valuation.

There’s also a marketing component to this strategy. Musk is exceptionally good at keeping investors focused on the next transformative vision rather than current financial performance. When the EV growth story loses momentum, it’s autonomy, Cybercabs and humanoid robots. Beyond that, it’s AI, space-based computing and an integrated technology ecosystem. Each new ambition creates another reason to believe today’s valuations will eventually be justified.

The concern is that this becomes a circular financial ecosystem in which the valuation and investment appeal of one company help sustain the capital requirements and valuation of another. Investors are increasingly being asked to buy into the entire Musk vision rather than evaluate each business on its own financial merits.

Ultimately, Musk has mastered the art of monetizing tomorrow’s promises at today’s valuations. The real question is how much of that collective valuation is supported by sustainable economic returns versus what these companies might eventually become.

His greatest product may be the dream itself.

Josephbleau বলেছেন...

My God, Democrats have 25 year old Mc Kinsey MBAs doing PowerPoints off the clock to provide IEE’s posts now! Including the trademarked “final kill line”. Here “
His greatest product may be the dream itself.” Which is meaningless.

Josephbleau বলেছেন...

“Ultimately, Musk has mastered the art of monetizing tomorrow’s promises at today’s valuations.”

What a steaming pile of bullshit. The whole fing stock market monetizes tomorrow’s promises in today’s dollars! If we think something is good we invest in it! If Elon has mastered it, good for him! Because we all do it!

IEE, I am glad you are starting to learn about the market.

Josephbleau বলেছেন...

“ But there’s a bigger financial story here than simply merging SpaceX and Tesla. Musk appears to be consolidating his business empire into an interconnected ecosystem: SpaceX and Starlink provide commercial revenue, Tesla brings manufacturing and energy infrastructure, and xAI supplies the AI ambitions underpinning much of the collective valuation.”

And Musk is the stupidest man in the world. A total failure.

IEE believes that Research and Development Departments of large companies and committees that coordinate product development with marketing research testing are completely stupid. Because Musk does it. But that is what industry has been based on for 100 years, since Du Pont. IEE, give up. Your Kinsey Team was given to you because they were not “needed” elsewhere.

You do if you are high speed, low drag. Move to the next, drop the past, Elon is canceling the falcon 9 rocket, the most profitable and demanded product around. Why, because he has something better. And so, what is next for him? Not making the same old truck he made a while back.

You just don’t understand. Einstein did gf matrices, Elon does hyper product development.

Josephbleau বলেছেন...

Ford says, let’s make a product everyone likes and build it forever. Elon says, no cash cows, we sell only the best. Cancel what we did 3 years ago. Sell what’s new. It’s why he is richer than anyone.

john mosby বলেছেন...

Maybe Elon''s skunk works is combining Neuralink with Cybertruck. Wire a human into a vehicle, that can then be used as a battlewagon to defend the greater Musk empire from the Left. A lot of disabled people might volunteer for the project, to live even a few minutes with hyper human powers before dying to preserve freedom.

And of course Musk would personally lead this cyborg fleet, after wiring himself into some sort of juggernaut from which he can instantly command and control land, air, cyber and space elements. Stay rich or die trying!

Big mistake to take on a real-life Bond villain. CC, JSM
