Hilarious - to me - breakdown of the Senate Race in Mississipppi. Colum the black Democrat has a slight lead and is forecasted to win. But the comedy comes in the demographics.

Blacks -91 percent D.
Black women 99 percent D.
White men - 21 percent D
White Women - 33 percent D.

The only reason its a close race is because whites outnumber blacks 2-1.

So I have a religious question for the usual suspects here:

Could Jesus see angels?

This is prompted by The Chosen's latest teaser for their new season, which starts the 16th.

https://youtu.be/05HgLbWet8c?si=ctUVcneCqhVkghAG

In the teaser, Jesus is about to be arrested in Gethsemane. Three warrior angels jump onto the walls of the garden, visible only to JC, and prepared to counterattack the Temple guards and Roman soldiers.

JC looks up at them and silently shakes his head 'no.'

This scene is of course non-Biblical. But it sort of riffs on JC's statement that he could ask the Father for twelve legions of angels to defend him.

A lot of people have been focusing on the aesthetics of the angels. I immediately had a Christological concern:

JC the man has perfect faith. Which means he does not have knowledge. He believes the angels can appear to defend him. But for this to be faith, he must have no actual experience with angels.

Of course, Christ is dual-natured: he is also The Son, Who is always with angels.

The paradox of the dual nature doctrine is that JC must simultaneously hang out with angels and have no actual knowledge of them. We will not resolve this paradox in this world. But I think that however you pin down the dual-natures doctrine, it does not anticipate pre-death JC waving off angels.

Also, JC has to feel the full sense of abandonment that we as humans feel in extremis. Angels on the walls ready to pierce some scuti are not abandonment.

(A contrary non-biblical scene, from Kazantzakis's Last Temptation of Christ, has JC seeing his Roman killers as angels hammering in the nails, then thinking "God is crucifying me!" Also some problems there, but more in keeping with the genuine human emotions he must have been feeling.

Interestingly, the actual gospels have lots of scenes of JC with demons, and with Satan himself. They all know exactly Who and What He is. And He can recognize them and of course command them.

But angels? The disputed line about angels comforting him after he sweats blood, and the undisputed but very vague line about angels ministering to him after his desert fast and temptation by Satan. No detailed information. The desert ministration could just be dropping off some food and water around the bend of a wadi.

Finally, nothing Christological, but: right before the arrest, during his bloody-sweat prayer session, JC says "Not My will, but Thine" to the Father. He resolves to go through with the Passion. So why would angels show up unbidden to defend him? Seems like they are not following the Father and Son's wills.

I dunno, what do you all think? CC, JSM

St Croix, I was writing from before you put out your prayer request. Sorry to drown it out with Bible nerdiness. The most important thing is that all will be well (Julian of Norwich). But perhaps some theological nerdery will distract you from your problems for a bit? Again, I know that all will be well for you. CC, JSM

Message for vibe bandit

This week I've felt like my world is a sacred and beautiful space. And an amazing, joyful gift. And a dark, and scary universe where nobody cares, and people glare at you on the street.

I can't prove "vibes" scientifically but I've definitely felt them. From women, from strangers, from music, from dogs, from a sunset, from the beach. There is no right or wrong with vibes. And thinking won't help you. There are good vibes, bad vibes, and no vibes. But man oh man, our world is an interesting place. I want to share the good news of Christ. But I also want to keep my mouth shut and my head down. I'm hoping for some Good Vibrations

God's peace, brother.

You are loved by God and me and other humans you may not even know. Don’t despair, God knows what you need. I will of course pray that whatever it is that has you feeling low will be healed. I like to think of earth with millions of bright little lights that are human prayers going up to heaven. What a beautiful sight that must be to God who loves us.

Don’t forget Saint Croix, that Inga from the Althouse blog loves you, you have a good soul, I can feel it.

When Help rescues Christian from the Slough of Despond in the book “Pilgrim’s Progress”, he says, “ "It is not the pleasure of the King that this place should remain so bad." To be clear, it’s tomorrow morning:

“In Eastern Standard Time (EST), the closest approach of the conjunction will take place on Saturday morning, November 7, 2026, between 5:30 AM and 6:15 AM EST.”

It’s the closest approach of the year. In southern South America it will be an actual occultation.

FWIW St Croix,

”Why It Is Seen Positively

• The "Lesser Benefic": In Western astrology, Venus is known as the "Lesser Benefic" (a planet that brings good fortune, harmony, and joy). When it pairs with the Moon, which rules emotions, intuition, and the home, it is generally thought to bring a sense of peace, emotional alignment, and strong social connections.
• The "Morning Star" Energy: In the morning sky (as a "Morning Star"), Venus represents renewal, hope, and fresh beginnings. Watching it rise just before dawn alongside a sliver of the crescent Moon is traditionally seen as an inspiring symbol of a new day.”

I had a heck of a dream last night! Oh my goodness. Peaceful Islam and the Jews and the Christians on one side. Not to mention the sweet atheists. All 19 of them. A little too much alcohol in the celebration. "We know there is God because there is beer!"

"I heard it was actually wine and not beer."

"Ben Franklin, I love that guy."

"They told me Ye was playing. They sucked me in with Ye, but I don't see Ye."

"What I want to know is why the Christians get to cry in public." And so on and so forth. It was a crazy party. It was a love fest. No orgies, you know. It's like "love" and "sex" are two completely different things or something. In my dream, you understand.

The big 3 religions getting along in public, more or less. And the atheists were all, "I might not be an atheist. You don't know. You don't know what's going on in my mind."

"All you need is love! Love. All you need is love! Love. All you need is love! Love. Love is all you need." A lot of Beatles music. "I think the Beatles might be the best band the world has ever seen."

"I know it's crazy but I like the Sex Pistols," some damn happy feminist says. That's right, happy feminists. Happy feminists in my dream! I know, it's crazy. They believed in equality and shit. Men and women getting married and sleeping together. "I don't care if we get married or not married," some hot lesbian says. "We were just fucking with y'all. You want marriage back? You can have marriage back if you want marriage back. The main thing is that we don't get raped. We hate that."

"Take my wife. Please." The Baptist says.

"You have no sense of humor," the Orthodox Jew says.

"Is it 609 Commandments in the Bible, or 613 Commandments in the Bible?" The smart ass in the back says. "I only know like 22 Commandments."

"22? That's pretty good if you know 22."

"God invented orgasms! We know God loves us because of orgasms. He invented orgasms! You think your hairless monkeys are nice enough to invent orgasms? Only God is cool enough and nice enough and lovely enough to give us the orgasms. You know how many ways a cruel creator could have invented a way to reproduce? An infinite number of ways. But only a God who loves us gives us orgasms!"

"Shits are hilarious!" some peace-lover from Japan says. "God is shitty."

"No! Damn it. God is the shit. That's what the kids say."

"Is there a public shower where I can wash?" OCD man says.

"You can't be nude in public. We got kids here."

"OH SHIT!" everybody screams. The party gets super quiet. Everybody looks around.

"I don't see any 6 year olds. Where are the 6 year olds?" some Episcopalian asks.

"Shhhh. They are in the next room. And the walls are sound-proof," the Hindu says.

"Thanks a lot for wrecking the party, Ralph."

And the curtain closes. And somebody walks out in a tuxedo. "We're thinking of calling it Love Island."

"That sounds gay as shit!" somebody screams.

"What about Hate Island?"

"Oh?" the man in the tuxedo says. "You want to go to Hate Island?"

And that's when I wake up. Apparently, I did not want to go to Hate Island. Or Fear Island. Or Shit Your Pants Island. Or Rape Island. Or Kill People For Fun Island.

My brain was like, "Nope. I'm not in the mood for a nightmare tonight, all right?"

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

Sorry if my dream is a little confused. I got to go back to sleep.

Jesus called Satan the Father of Lies. Which I think is a clue or something. Don't lie to people. Be as honest as you can. Honesty is important. Don't be brutal or mean, either. Be nice. Or be quiet. You can always say nothing! That's an option. Silence is golden. Talk is cheap.

I do much, much better in community. I am very happy when I am here. (Maybe too happy sometimes). God bless the Althouse blog. She inspires me. And not just Althouse, but her rag-tag group of independent thinkers.

I love y'all very much.

Althouse kept me focused on abortion, all the way up until Roe v. Wade was overruled. Once it was overruled, she lost interest in the subject, more or less. And I barely write on it. Although aborting up until birth is crazy as shit.

I'm not sure if Bari Weiss can play the Althouse role for me. I'm not sure if she can provide a platform for me. I'm not sure she wants to! Who knows if these free speakers are honest or not honest. Maybe they just like to pretend to be free speakers. Maybe I just pretend to be pro-life. We all can do better, when we do the stuff we like to do.

Another major theme in Christianity is "the way." As in, don't get lost, and go down the wrong road. Don't keep circling, around and around, trying to find your way back home. This can be scary. You are lost. And it's ridiculous, because you ought to know where you are. Your phone app isn't working right. Maybe it led you down a bad path.

And it makes you so happy, to find the right road. The road you know. Jesus is the way. Stay on that road and you'll be all right.

Humperdink বলেছেন...

Jaq, really? Are you daft?

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

When I googled "unable to relax," I got this

Being physically or mentally unable to relax usually happens because your nervous system is stuck in a protective state (such as "fight or flight" or hypervigilance), rather than a simple lack of willpower.

Why Your Body Won't Power Down

• Nervous System Dysregulation: If you have experienced chronic stress, trauma, or ongoing pain, your body may fail to return to baseline even when your schedule is calm.
• The "Tired but Wired" Effect: Adrenaline and cortisol keep your engine running, making stillness feel uncomfortable, dangerous, or guilt-inducing.
• Physiological Triggers: Sleep disruption, high caffeine intake, blood sugar spikes, or hidden physical inflammation can keep your internal alarm sounding

I do have a lot of stress in my life right now. Usually I use humor to reduce stress. Sometimes humor can backfire.

Anyway, please don't worry about me. Don't stress yourself out. I'm in good shape, just tired. Thank you so much, Althouse blog.

Donald Trump stole US military secrets for Israel and Israel bartered them to the Soviets. Trump commuted the life sentence he was serving for treason, and now Congress, the Republican Congress, is preparing to pass a law that would make Pollard’s treason perfectly legal by making available to them all of our technical secrets, giving them access to all of our intelligence, intercpts, satellite, whatever, and the Democrats won’t stop it because Israel owns Scummer too.

I might have some ADD. I watched a lot of cartoons when I was a kid. So my brain jumps around. It's super fast sometimes. My sleep is horrible. I take a lot of naps. I asked my father one time if I might be mentally ill. And I listed all the symptoms I could imagine. And my Dad just looked at me and goes, "Taylor, you are not mentally ill." BTW, I don’t think that any of our soldiers “deserved” these attacks, they are not the ones who decided to fight these wars, like Iraq, or even to be in a barracks in Lebanon that got blown up as a US warship was shelling the Lebanese in the Beka Valley on the behalf of Israel, and foolishly ordered to be there by their government.

All I can do is vote against governments that pursue these actions. But thanks for putting words in my mouth.

“Please give us an example where Iran attacked the US where we weren’t a foreign power occupying a country in their neighborhood, or hadn’t installed a brutal dictator in their country in a coup and controlled their oil for 25 years. I will wait.”

I won’t make you wait long. It happened 57 years and 3 days ago. Under international law a nation’s embassy is legally that nation’s sovereign territory,* ergo the Iranian “students” invaded sovereign American territory.

____________________
* For those wondering, from the perspective of international law, when the Clinton administration bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade in May 1999, from a legal perspective we dropped bombs on sovereign mainland China.

Iman বলেছেন...

Make that 47 years and 3 days ago, Big Mike. Well said, sir.

Jaq বলেছেন...

Is it against international law to overthrow an elected government and replace him with a dictator who ruled brutally via his secret police and signed over its resources to us, like we did to Iran in 1953?

Jaq বলেছেন...

What about for us to provide Saddam with the precursors to chemical weapons, which he used against Iran and killed half a million Iranians? Is that against international law?

Dr Weevil বলেছেন...

Jaq reminds us that the blowing up of the Marine barracks in Lebanon (October 23, 1983) happened "as a US warship was shelling the Lebanese in the Beka [sic] Valley", as if the bombing were a reaction to the shelling. In fact, it was the other way around. The battleship New Jersey was sent to the area after terrorists blew up the U.S. embassy in Beirut, not a legitimate target, killing 63, on April 18th of the same year. Whether this gross ignorance is first-hand, or second-hand (he's copying talking points), or pretended (he knows the truths, but lies to deceive the less-informed), is hard to say.

Dr Weevil বলেছেন...

The "precursors to chemical weapons" are chemicals legitimately used as insecticides to protect crops, and traded internationally by all civilized countries for that purpose. It was naive not to realize that Saddam wanted them to make weapons to kill people, but I don't think any American realized, until it was too late, what he wanted them for.
