"Gavin Newsom’s decision to empty his state’s death row is a truly remarkable moment in the US’s death penalty history."

"Not only will it free hundreds of people from the threat of execution, but coming from a politician seemingly looking to run for the presidency, it sends an important signal that America’s attachment to capital punishment is weakening, and opposing the death penalty is no longer a third rail in US politics."

Writes Austin Sarat, in "We’ve just seen a transformative moment in America’s death penalty history/Gavin Newsom’s decision to empty California’s death row saves hundreds of lives and signals a national shift" (The Guardian).

California executed 11 people from 1996 to 2006. And none since. So, 11 people in 30 years. If you look at the names, you have 2 blacks, 1 Thai, and 8 white men.

I was shocked that California still had a death row or sentenced people to death.

Newsome communting their sentences is just another "fuck you" to the voters and aveage people who want killers executed. But I doubt the "voters" in california will do anything about it. Many Democrats believe in capital punishment - but voting for their beloved Democrats is always Job 1.

RCOCEAN II বলেছেন...

Btw, from 1986 to 1996, California executed 4 people. All white males.

RCOCEAN II বলেছেন...

BTW, BTW, in 50 years in California (1850-1900) over 350 people were lynched. When the "Rowdy element" in Gold Rush towns and even early SF got out of hand, people ran out of patience and it was "Hang 'em high".

Now, killing someone who tortured 5 kids to death, is a matter of wailing and gnashing of teeth. Of course, Newsome has no problem with Netenayhu killing Gazans by the thousands, or giving Zelensky billions to "Kill Ruskiees". But his big, bleeding heart, just cant stand those killers being put to death.

If he only had the same amount of concern for the victims. But then he's just a meat-puppett for the big donors. A used car salesman who just does and says what gives him power and puts money in his pocket. I doubt he has any morals or ethics.

"Another brilliant move by the Democrats convincing the normies that democrats hate them."

As spoken extensively since last Tuesday, the problem with political positions and promises is and always has been the keeping of them.

If you say "no new wars" you'd better have a damned good reason (and he didn't...) to start a fresh one or you're going to pay for it. Conversely, if you promise "a world without prisons", "defund the police", "abolish the border!" or "get rid of the death penalty"...and god have mercy on your soul you keep it...following through on these thoroughly hairbrained policies meant to rile up a small fraction of your base becomes an excellent reminder of just how truly insane you are to all the people that forgot since the last election.

Politics can be great that way. Every promise indebts one to keeping it, and every debt must be paid. Woke 2 is going to be sooooo crazy yo!

When I interviewed for a State prosecutor position in Florida, I was asked my views on the death penalty. I replied I was favor of electric bleachers.

That said, I recognize that reasonable people can oppose the death penalty for diverse reasons. I just disagree with them.

Justice William Brennan (and self-appointed chief legislator) opposed the death penalty essentially because he didn't like it, ignoring the Constitution which explicitly permits it. He finally got a majority to throw it out as unconstitutional in 1972. A different majority reinstated it in 1976.

boatbuilder বলেছেন...

Well it's only a few hundred families who are forever denied the justice which their loved ones deserved and which, after the full panoply of legal rights were extended to the depraved criminal murderers, was decreed by the members of the juries who had to make the excruciatingly difficult decision of whether the death penalty was appropriate, after being summoned by the state to devote a significant chunk of their lives to hearing the cases.
So no big deal that one virtue-signaling governor with an eye to the presidency throws it all out. Right after the election. So brave.

Don't listen to me about the afterlife. Don't listen to anybody except Jesus on that. As far as I know, he is the only who made it to the afterlife and came back. Because he loved his followers and wanted them to spread the truth. And they did. And 11 of them died horrible deaths. And Christianity grew and grew and grew. Maybe if you fail to get to heaven, God just puts you to sleep. And you don't even know that you didn't make it. There are people on death row who know Jesus. And according to Christ, all sins can be forgiven. And there are billionaires who better enjoy their 70 years. Don't be angry, don't be shallow, don't be glib. Wake up and find Jesus. I'm sorry I spent so much of my life entertaining myself.

I'll explain it so even you can understand.
President Trump pardoned that man for the conviction of a crime he did not commit. Long after that, the man committed an actual crime that had nothing to do with Trump or the bogus conviction that Trump pardoned him for.
Newsom commuted the sentences of mass murderers, child molesters, and serial killers for crimes that they had already committed, while knowing all about those heinous crimes and murders.
Trump did not know the man would commit a crime in the future.
Newsom knows exactly what repulsive violent crimes those nearly 600 murderers committed in the past.

Hope that helps.

Please use the comments forum to respond to the post. Don't fight with each other. Be substantive... or interesting... or funny. Comments should go up immediately... unless you're commenting on a post older than 4 days. Then you have to wait for us to moderate you through. It's also possible to get shunted into spam by the machine. We try to keep an eye on that and release the miscaught good stuff. We do delete some comments, but not for viewpoint... for bad faith. Also: No italics, even briefly. Use asterisks for emphasis. And don't play with the format by changing fonts or using boldface or all caps. Never include more than one extra line break between paragraphs.
