Nidal Malik Hasan, a former U.S. Army Major turned traitor, is a very bad and evil man, who killed 13 people, including a pregnant soldier, who died, along with her unborn son, and injured, very seriously, 32 more innocent people. Barack Hussein Obama’s Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) intercepted electronic communications between Hasan and the radical Yemeni-American cleric, Anwar al-Awlaki. When reviewed by his FBI terrorism task force, investigators concluded that Hasan's emails were not a threat. This assessment of the Obama Administration’s actions was later considered to be a key intelligence failure. With all of that being said, I think streaming the execution for all to see might have been a strong deterrent for the World to witness how America deals with Terrorists and SCUM like Hasan but, many very good and well meaning people would rather not watch him die, through streaming, or through any other visual device. He will die, as scheduled, by firing squad, but this event will not be streamed. That said, the execution may be viewed in person by the immediate families of the victims, if they so choose. They deserve to witness JUSTICE! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP
An obvious response to that reasoning — in boldface — is that no one would be forced to watch the execution. You'd watch it or not watch it based on your own preference. Trump knows that, of course. He's choosing not to speak more clearly, which would be to say: Many very good and well meaning people think there are negative consequences to live-streaming this execution, and I am siding with them.

I would consider it my duty as a DP supporter to watch it. We have all seen many people killed on the screen. This would be one of the few who deserved it. That said, I agree with Trump's call, but only because I expect that the showing would be bad for support of the DP, as the media would make a negative circus of it. I hate seeing death. I can't even watch a video of a lion killing a wildebeest. I gave up hunting at an early age because I just couldn't enjoy the kill. I'm a carnivore, so I've forced myself to at least watch the killing and butchering of the animals I eat. I feel obligated to do so if I'm going to eat meat. I would prefer having to hunt for my own meat, and I would, if I had to. We should face our choices fully, and not pretend we are above it so much we can't even watch. I would even participate in a firing squad, as much as I would hate it.

Televising executions is definitely regressive. I think that's why Hegseth proposed it. He was being more hyperbolic than Trump. If you're sick of civility bullshit, vote for Hegseth and not Vance in 2028.......I think it would be neat if the soldiers all got together and decided to aim at his feet for the first volley. Then for the next volley, they could aim for the kneecaps and so on. Not all of my opinions are progressive, but I do think that televising executions is wrong.

I think Trump made the right decision, and Althouse raises a good point about the weakness of his explanation. The issue goes beyond simply letting viewers decide whether to watch.

There's a legitimate argument for making sure the government carries out executions openly and responsibly. But independent witnesses, including representatives of the victims' families, along with detailed reporting, can provide accountability without turning an execution into a worldwide spectacle.
We can believe Hasan deserves his sentence while still questioning what useful purpose livestreaming his death would serve.

Hasan knew they would be unarmed because he was both an army officer and a medical doctor, and thus fully aware that soldiers were not permitted to be armed at the medical facility.

People seem to be under the impression that if you don't see it, it didn't happen or isn't really an execution. Not all of them. That was true of the Nuremburg defendants for the shocking crimes they committed against civilians, but those who were found guilty of war crimes against Allied forces were shot, often quite promptly after they were captured. General Anton Dostler was the most prominent, after he ordered that a group of American POWs be executed in the closing months of the war, but there were others like Wehrmacht captain Curt Bruns and U-Boat commander Hans-Wilhelm Eck who got the same treatment for similar crimes. Dostler's execution can be seen in graphic detail on YouTube.
This is good politics but is it good policy? We should demand maximum accountability and transparency. How is that possible if Mr. Hasan is executed in secret?
As an aside -- the Chinese did a public execution of a notorious drug dealer a few years ago. It was ridiculous with reality TV show vibes. At one point during the two hour (!) broadcast, an award ceremony for the investigators was shown. There was music and small children carrying bouquets. It was pretty tawdry. I wonder if Trump would have done something similar?

The opinion of the country on this is by no means one-sided. If you think it was, you are in a bubble. I'm in the middle. I can defend it either way. I'm not emotional. I'm logical and realistic. I assume Trump liked the idea, but many around him convinced him it was not worth it to give the media an easy target. As Siros said: "This is good politics, but is it good policy? Trump simply made an easy call. Cancelling it won't hurt him politically, but doing it right now might. It's not going to fix anything either way, so avoid the risk.
