"The Puritans had scarlet letters, and now the content creators have scarlet posts: video apologies..."
"... usually negotiated by lawyers for brands and public figures that have come under criticism from influencers pushing commentary not always rooted in facts. For the women who whittle their free time on New York lifestyle Instagram accounts, Gellis’s austere video was startling as it appeared amid a scroll of the standard imagery that generates likes, comments and commerce.... Chatter about the video spread across Instagram and around New York last weekend, revisiting F-Factor, a pre-Ozempic-era high fiber diet, as well as Gellis’s relentless campaign, which created a pandemic-days internet spectacle-cum-unscripted reality show....."

Candace looking at her future.
The lawyers who wrote that failed to appreciate that brevity is the soul of wit. After about a minute, I thought--this is good; this woman ought to pay a price for her conduct. After two minutes I thought "enough, already." Now I feel sorry for Gellis (or for myself for having to listen as the thing droned on).
Apology videos after calls for cancellation is Woke 1.0 stuff, which is to say nothing new. As Bridget Phetasy suggests, it is a waste of time to apologize. They don't accept it other than your recognition that you did something wrong.
Puritans shaming people to apologize and then never forgiving is also nothing new.
"The agreement demands that Gellis pay Zuckerbrot $500 a month for 40 years, totaling $240,000."
Ouch. That's gonna sting.
Zuckerbrot posted an edited version to her account that includes the original claims by Gellis:

Emily got a little carried away there didn't she? That was absolutely hilarious!
Gellis should also be required to change her first name to Karen.
Wow! That should send a message.
Why would she do the anti-diet content in the first place? Seems a bit obsessive with pure conjecture. Did the owner of the F-Factor diet dump her for another girl or something?
I read the article. As contretemps go, it's more entertaining than that thing about the mechanical bird. I would never trifle with someone named Zuckerbrot. She looks formidable, plus she;'s got a husband with deep pockets........I don't think either women came out ahead here so justice was served. They both deserved to lose, although to be fair Gellis deserves more blame.
Career as an influencer may be over. Based on this experience she could possibly find employment with a major traditional media organization who could utilize her skills.
I hope the monthly $500 has an inflation adjustment built in.
Three and a half years is a lifetime online.
It was a settlement so they both "agreed."
Social media has been a good thing on balance for society.
Social media has destroyed women.
Is porn considered social media?
Hopefully the $500 is in the form of a check personally written and mailed by Ms Gellis.
It seems like the influencers and content creators aren't being punished enough. I would suggest that a few executions, Tennessee style, might set them right.
The modern family has been more creative, liberal, with Diverse judgments and labels. Progress.
'...But the reporters also found that one of the most serious allegations Gellis publicized — that the diet caused a miscarriage — was untrue, and 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙨𝙚𝙩𝙪𝙥 𝙗𝙮 𝙖 𝙬𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙂𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙞𝙛 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙞𝙢 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚.....
'....More than the video, lawyers said, this financial arrangement is novel and was probably structured to force Gellis to be reminded every month of her transgressions. ...'
...'Last week, before Gellis had posted the video herself, Zuckerbrot did so on her own accounts, first reaching out to friends to ask that they too share it. “I want it to go viral and for the truth to get out,” she wrote in a text message reviewed by The Times.

Brother, what a cat-fight. Shaking my head. All these stories over the past few days about women, and the Law.
Kelly Clarkson should be paying attention to this. Using her 5,000,000 followers to attack a small Brooklyn store within 15 min of walking out of the store in which she spent less than 5 minutes was irresponsible and abusive. I look forward to her pinned apology video.

All I could think about was Emily’s lip filler. How much? How often? Did she get extra for this video?
Creative punishment. Would love to see similar from NYT, WAPO and New Yorker writers, editors, and publishers.

It was sort of like closing the eyes of a dead person as an act of kindness. I kept hitting pause and play over and over hoping to pause the video on a reasonably flattering still image of Ms. Gellis but that never happened.
This should be a cautionary tale, but I doubt it will be.
