"The co-pilot who tried to hijack a flight bound for Israel... used a crash ax to attack the captain in the cockpit, UAE officials said."

"The co-pilot attempted to 'take control of the aircraft' and carry out a 'terrorist act,' UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said.... The UAE statement answers one of the questions over potential security lapses that emerged following the incident — how the co-pilot was able to access a weapon on board. A crash ax is normally used for emergency evacuations, Marco Chan, a former pilot, said in an interview. 'If none of the exit doors are available, the pilot can … use the ax to crack' designated parts of the plane’s structure which are designed to open more easily to create an exit route. In current Boeing 737 planes, the crash ax 'is usually located just behind the first officer or co-pilot' in the cockpit, said Chan...."

Apparently this has caused a huge scandal in the UAE over “who hired and enabled this guy” since Omani officials warned about the co pilots “extremist” views when he was being hired for the FlyDubai job. It’s reported that at least 18 in the UAE are being identified as “enablers” and are being investigated. The UAE does not look kindly on radicals and even pressured Saudi to send the copilot back to them.

The UAE has a reputation for stability, calm and safety - as a place and as a transport hub. Huge black mark. They shut down Iranian trading houses after a few drones hit them too - closing a big money center for the IGRC. Shows they take things personal and serious.

As far as I know, the required crash axe has never been used for its intended purpose anywhere, ever.

But it has been used to hijack MH377, and now this near tragedy.

Maybe it is time to get rid of the thing.

While not a true lumberjack, I consider myself quite good at using an ax, and sharpening one. Most axes when purchased are not nearly sharp enough to do much damage. Of course I suppose these are no ordinary axes. I certainly hope that when they decide to remove them from all the aircraft they don’t spend a lot of resources to destroy them ( like they would guns) I’m sure there are many collectors who would find them interesting. In this instance I find myself somewhat surprised that there’s enough room in a cockpit to effectively swing an axe.

True, before fortified flight deck doors (which became required long after the need was obvious). Now, not nearly so much.

Interesting contrast in the coverage: Israeli outlets largely frame the Flydubai attack through Israel’s security and election politics— Netanyahu’s warnings and his “only I can keep Israel safe” message. UAE and regional coverage focuses more on aviation security, the investigation, and the diplomatic fallout.

Same incident, very different political framing.

@Skipper, do you would rather the copilot on Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 529 burned to death? The turboprop crashed after the tip of a propellor blade broke off, ultimately ruining the ability of that wing to provide lift, killing the captain and initiating a fire that would kill 8 passengers. The copilot was trapped but was able to open a hole in the cockpit window with the axe.

Hey Skipper said...

Big Mike: I wasn't aware of that mishap, thanks.

However, it is nearly certain MH370 was hijacked using the crash axe to kill or severely injure the First Officer, resulting in 238 fatalities. This came near as dammit to adding another 181.

The Captain of MH370 was also a Muslim. They do seem to be disproportionately involved in airline murder-suicides for some reason. Maybe putting one in the cockpit of a plane full of Jews headed to Tel Aviv wasn’t the best idea. But I guess it’s better than being accused of Islamophobia.

Mason G said...

"They do seem to be disproportionately involved in airline murder-suicides for some reason."

Passenger airline crashes are unusual, intentional ones are rare and intentional pilot crashes are virtually unheard of. Passenger planes are generally flown by highly trained airline pilots, many of them are veterans of their respective air forces, and they remain calm in a crisis.

That’s why there hasn’t been a single case of an American airline pilot deliberately crashing a plane and only one case of an airline pilot taking down a western plane with all onboard and that took place in 2015 when a suicidal first officer crashed Lufthansa’s Germanwings Flight 9525.

The only other case involving a western pilot, but not a western airline, was the crash of Mozambique Airlines Flight TM470 in Africa by a Portuguese pilot. Every other case has involved non-western pilots with two Asian pilots and four Muslim pilots deliberately crashing or trying to crash planes: including the first known deliberate crash of a passenger plane by an airline pilot that took place in 1994 when Captain Younes Khayati deliberately disabled the autopilot on Royal Air Maroc Flight 630 and crashed the plane into a mountain.

The list of Muslim suicide pilots also includes EgyptAir Flight 990 in 1999 where the first officer kept shouting “Allahu Akbar” while downing the plane as well as Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, the subject of endless fantastic conspiracy theories ranging from UFOs to black holes, but that was actually likely the work of Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah.

After the FlyDubai incident in which an Omani Muslim pilot stabbed an Indian pilot in a reported attempt to hijack Flight FZ1073 bound for Israel and possibly crash the plane, the list of Muslim pilots who tried to bring down airplanes is up to 4.

And that means that 44% of pilots who deliberately crashed tried to crash planes were Muslim.

These statistics are all the more startling since Muslim pilots and airlines make up a very limited percentage of the airline travel sector. The Asian and North American market together account for 66% of flights, Europe adds another 23%, Africa comes in at only around 3% and the Middle East only accounts for 5%. Despite that, the Middle East and Africa account for a disproportionate number of deliberate pilot crashes when they represent a tiny minority of flights.

After 9-11, there was a discussion of weather US pilots should be allowed to be armed when flying the plane. The decision at the time was yes. The reason is fairly simple, if they want to kill everyone on the plane, they don't need a gun (or an ax). See Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 or Germanwings Flight 9525 as examples. Good thing the FlyDubai Captain didn't need to get up and use the restroom during the flight.

I’d give partial credit to the 9/11 guys too. Maybe they weren’t certified pilots, but they had enough training to know what to do once they got in the cockpit.

James K said...

I recall that after Germanwings, a single pilot can’t be alone in the cockpit when one of the pilots uses the john. Another crew member either waits by the open door or goes into the cockpit. Of course that’s one of those “close the barn door after the horse escapes” type of regulations, very specific to what actually happened, but not to what might happen.

The article's author did. From the article:

The troubling statistic that nearly half of pilots attempting to crash their own planes were Muslim does not take into account Muslim hijackings, including the Islamic terror attacks of September 11, or any other hijacking attempts, but is limited only to pilots crashing passenger airline planes.

If we were to count hijackings, 9/11 alone would ensure a much worse track record for Muslims flying planes since these were by far the deadliest cases of pilots, however illegal and illegitimate, weaponizing jet airplanes to cause as much damage and loss of life as possible.

My son said these weapons should be in glass cases: only open in case of improper deployment of a weapon.

I would add him to the Islam airplane hijacker/terrorist list above.

You make a nonsense claim, because you don't know square root of heck all. Sure, I suppose it is possible that I could take out the other guy with my iPad, or the flight deck fire extinguisher or walk-around oxygen bottle. The big difference is that the axe is small, and easily removed without making any noise. The iPad is ridiculous, and the other two so bloody obvious as to arouse serious alarm well ahead of an attack.

"People used to suggest Pilots being armed. Thank God that isn't the case anymore."

It is called the Federal Flight Deck Officer program, started in 2002 and continues to this day.

James K said... "I recall that after Germanwings, a single pilot can’t be alone in the cockpit when one of the pilots uses the john."

Since reinforced flight deck doors, US airlines always required a flight attendant or jumpseating pilot on the flight deck whenever one of the assigned pilots left the flight deck.

The Europeans have done so since GermanWings.

Also, EU privacy laws prevented the EASA from knowing the GermanWings first officer's psychological issues.

The FAA gets enough medical information to have known what was going on — he would have been medically disqualified.
