The 911 calls in the aftermath of the failed execution of Christa Pike.

See "Calls Show How Confusion Delayed Emergency Response for Christa Pike/The first 911 call from inside the prison was made at 8:40 p.m. It took about 30 minutes to verify its authenticity" (NYT).

"Confusion" is putting it euphemistically. How do I know the prison employees were not deliberately delaying in the hope that Pike would eventually expire?

"The initial 911 call did not come, as it might normally, from the central control at the Tennessee Department of Correction, and the caller did not have the right security verification." So who called? And why didn't someone with clear authority call? The NYT can't answer those questions because the state has secrecy laws that protect its employees who do the work of carrying out the death penalty.

There was an execution protocol, it didn't kill Pike, and there was no protocol relating to what to do next. But that did not create the authority to kill her in some other — slower — way.

I'm guessing that there's no 911 protocol for "We're trying to kill this bitch and she ain't dead yet."

We've long forgotten about her victim. She's not here. and now our hearts bleed for the murderer.

Someone should have a pistol, just in case. That's what pistols are for - just in case your silly theater fails at doing what it tries so hard not to do.

The state had no privilege to kill her other than according to the protocol. If you think killing her in some other way is justifiable and even good, you're in the Luigi Mangione school of morality.

The reason why she is still alive, the victim's family continues to be tortured, and this circus doesn't end is billable hours. The only people benefiting, as usual.

The court ordered a protocol, but it also ordered an outcome. Why is only one of those important?
What court ordered Mangione's victim dead?

Anyone discussing plan B? That there wasn't a plan B - that does not make me a fan of Mangione. I hope Mangione is sentenced to death. But he won't be in our era of up-side down moral depravity.
Again -
The problem is the victim of Pike's crime in forgotten, and now we must treat the criminal like a hero.

Only a university education can get you to think that a total failure of the protocol resulting in an obstruction of justice that failed to deliver the court's order and the jury's verdict is the system working as it should.

Peachy+2 ने कहा…

Bagoh's idea isn't SLOW. It's quick.

Peachy+2 ने कहा…

I find it insane that she was rushed to be saved. If she was unconscious, AND SHE WAS, - administer MORE end of life "care." That should have been the obvious protocol.
But you see all the bleeding hearts rushed it to say "No do overs!"

I had to call the home care vet to administer "end of life care" for a beloved 20 year old pet. It was an act of mercy to gently end his life in the most humane way possible.

n.n ने कहा…

Mangione Planned the abortion or premeditated murder of an innocent life.

bagoh20 ने कहा…

The protocol is important, but so is the death order.
Imagine if saving someone's life were handled like this. "Oh, the CPR didn't work right away, so to hell with it. Bag him." They put all kinds of effort and tried multiple things to save her after a court order to end her. If they did nothing, justice would been done without suffering. Now we have the suffering without the justice.

This failure isn't law or justice - it's feelings looking for something righteous to hide behind. Some want the verdict and sentence carried out, and some don't. It's that simple.

Grok, have executions by injections failed on other occasions?

Thought for 14s

Yes. Lethal injections used for capital punishment in the United States have failed or been botched on numerous occasions—far more frequently than other historical methods.

deathpenaltyinfo.org

Lethal injection (first used in 1982) has the highest documented botch rate. Researcher Austin Sarat’s analysis of U.S. executions from 1890–2010 found roughly 3.15% overall were botched (276 of 8,776), but lethal injection accounted for about 7.1–7.2% (75 of 1,054). Later data show the rate for lethal injection rising closer to 8% in more recent decades. A “botched” execution typically involves breakdowns in protocol, prolonged procedures, difficulty establishing IV lines, visible distress, or other complications that cause unnecessary suffering—most still end in death, though some attempts are fully aborted.

deathpenaltyinfo.org

Complete failures (prisoner survives the attempt)These almost always involve inability to set usable intravenous lines; drugs are usually not administered. Documented cases include:Romell Broom (Ohio, 2009) — halted after ~2 hours and multiple needle sticks.
Alva Campbell (Ohio, 2017).
Doyle Lee Hamm (Alabama, 2018).
Alan Eugene Miller (Alabama, 2022) — ~90 minutes of failed attempts.
Kenneth Eugene Smith (Alabama, 2022) — later executed by nitrogen hypoxia in 2024.
Thomas Creech (Idaho, 2024) — eight failed insertion attempts over nearly an hour.
Tony Carruthers (Tennessee, May 2026).

Christa Pike (Tennessee, September 30, 2026) is the rare exception: she received two doses of pentobarbital yet remained alive (reports of consciousness, breathing/snoring), was hospitalized, and later regained consciousness. Prior survivors had not received the drugs.

itv.com

Notable botched cases that still resulted in deathExamples include prolonged or visibly distressing procedures such as Clayton Lockett (Oklahoma, 2014 — ~45 minutes, vein problems and tissue injection), Joseph Wood (Arizona — hundreds of gasps over nearly two hours), Joe Nathan James Jr. (Alabama, 2022 — multi-hour process described as the longest modern lethal-injection execution), Raymond Landry (Texas, 1988 — catheter dislodged and sprayed chemicals), and others involving clogged lines, multiple failed sticks, or improper drug delivery.

deathpenaltyinfo.org

In 2022 alone, seven of 19 execution attempts were classified as botched (about 37%). Common contributing factors include difficulty locating veins (especially in people with histories of drug use or medical issues), limited medical expertise among execution teams (due to ethical restrictions on physician participation), drug shortages leading to compounded or alternative protocols, and infiltration of drugs into tissue rather than veins.

deathpenaltyinfo.org

In short, while most lethal-injection executions proceed without public incident, failures and complications have occurred repeatedly across multiple states and decades, with a higher rate than hanging, electrocution, lethal gas, or firing squad.

Well, isn't it great that we have an ethically superior arbiter of morality in the forum! It's just a shame that your morality edict is that kind of BS. Mangione indeed!

This evil creature - after having been tried, convicted and sentenced - was there to be executed. Too bad there wasn't a nice, fluffy, face-sized pillow handy at the time.

How so?

Ann Althouse ने कहा…

Since some of you have brought up abortion, I think the question of what to do with Christa Pike when she survived the lethal injection procedure is parallel with what to do with the living baby who survives an effort at abortion. Some doctors favored leaving the infant alone to expire. It wasn't wanted anyway. It was slated for elimination. That seems to be what they were doing to Christa Pike for an hour or so.

Peachy+2 ने कहा…

Is there a protocol to save her? Again - total insanity - even cruelty - to save her and then try again later.
But with the "forget the victim" left - the sympathy goes straight to the poor poor skull cracking terrorizing killer.

bagoh20 ने कहा…

"Slated to die"?

Maybe we should have a jury trial for every abortion.

Althouse, did you fall out of bed this morning?

Peachy+2 ने कहा…

OMG Ann .Really? A baby didn't commit a heinous crime.
There is no parallel.

Bob Boyd ने कहा…

They didn't have a protocol for what to do. It's totally understandable that the people at the prison didn't know if they should get her lifesaving help or not. This wasn't someone who'd had a heart attack. They had been in the mindset of bringing about her death for a long time and that meant learning and following the procedure provided to them for the purpose.
People in official positions tend to think about and prioritize following procedure. Outcomes are secondary. These people were doing exactly what you'd expect them to do when something happens for which there is no procedure, run it up the chain, ask your supervisor who will ask their supervisor who will ask their supervisor. The default is to do nothing, not to make a judgement call which might be wrong and for which they can be blamed.

Peachy+2 ने कहा…

Again - the original crime committed by this killer is completely forgotten.

Peachy+2 ने कहा…

Also, the left are never happy when an abortion is botched. They want that baby dead. The collective left demand that baby be killed. or left to die. They are hopping mad that anyone attempt to save it.

Again - the baby isn't a criminal who ended the life of another human being.

Peachy+2 ने कहा…

That we treat death row killers like babies - is no shock. It's just sad. and morally reprehensible.

bagoh20 ने कहा…

Also, when the baby survives, it is no longer in the same legal status as it was before. It's no longer part of the mother's body for her to choose. It's a separate living human with rights superseding the mother's choices, and innocent of any crime.

bagoh20 ने कहा…

"That we treat death row killers like babies - is no shock. It's just sad. and morally reprehensible."

Exactly, and it's more like the morality of a Mangione. I choose on my own to end this other human for my own reasons, and that's enough.

This brings to mind the "Bring out your dead" scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The guy with the body cart and 2 employees was a small business entrepreneur and as such, he was a decisive, practical problem solver who could think on his feet. He wasn't a mid-level bureaucrat or a clerk. He knew who the customer was and it wasn't the old geezer. It was the guy who was paying him. He made the customer happy and probably that guy would become a repeat customer and recommend him to all of his friends.
You just aren't going to get that in a bureaucratic institution like a state prison system.

Peachy+2 ने कहा…

GROK:
"The day before the killing, Crista Pike told another student she intended to kill Slemmer because she “had just felt mean that day.” [pre-meditated and planned]

On the evening of January 12, Pike, Shipp, and 18-year-old friend Shadolla Peterson signed out of the dorm with Slemmer. They lured her to a secluded area near an abandoned steam plant on the University of Tennessee campus (reportedly with an offer of marijuana or to “make peace”). Peterson acted as a lookout while Pike and Shipp attacked Slemmer for roughly 30 minutes to an hour.

Slemmer was beaten, kicked, had her head slammed against surfaces, and was repeatedly cut with a box cutter and meat cleaver. Her throat was slashed multiple times, and a pentagram was carved into her chest (Shipp has admitted he was the one who carved it). She pleaded for them to stop. Pike ultimately killed her by smashing her skull with a large chunk of asphalt. The cause of death was blunt-force trauma to the head. Pike took a fragment of Slemmer’s skull as a “souvenir” and later showed it to other students. "

Wow - we should ignore the victim and make sure Pike gets her deserved second chance. She is so nice.

Birches ने कहा…

Peaceful warrior ने कहा…

There's an interesting additional detail in this NewsChannel 5 report. According to the report, media witnesses had seen Pike gasping for air more than half an hour before the first 911 call. That raises another question: What accounts for the delay between those observations and the first request for medical assistance?

It helps to distinguish the delay in requesting medical help from the subsequent delay in getting responders into the prison. The first raises questions about when officials realized the execution had failed and medical help was needed. The second involves communication and who had authority to act.

The 8:40 call shows that someone inside the prison was trying to get help, while the 9:03 report that the call was false suggests serious confusion among officials. That doesn't rule out intentional delay, but it doesn't establish one either.

It would also be helpful to know whether the prison had a backup procedure for verifying emergencies when the caller lacked the usual security code, and who had authority to invoke it. These seem like sensible precautions when conducting an execution, one of the most consequential responsibilities the state can undertake.

I agree with Professor Althouse that a death sentence doesn't authorize officials to improvise another method of killing, even if the sentence itself remains legally enforceable.

None of these concerns diminishes the terrible crime against Colleen Slemmer or the suffering of her family. They too have every reason to expect the state to carry out its responsibilities competently and lawfully.

tommyesq ने कहा…

When Pike was convicted, she was sentenced to death by electrocution, not lethal injection. Tennessee switched to lethal injection a couple of years after her sentencing.

I don't recall Brian Thompson having a trial in the courts in which jurors reached the conclusion that he indeed murdered someone nor given appeals on whether that conclusion was properly reached. But setting aside Luigi's morality of murdering people in cold blood, let's talk about methods...

Do you know any nurses? Have you ever talked to them about what happens in hospitals every day when people reach their end of their life? Do you know how many doctors and nurses have DNRs, because they know the process of trying to keep a dying person alive is often more torturous than letting them die. Do you know how many people during Covid asked to be taken off respirators because being kept alive in that manner wasn't worth it to them?

I think you are being absurd suggesting that simply letting Christa Pike die slower, when it took emergency efforts to keep her alive at all, is equivalent to Luigi Mangione assassinating a person on the street.

And how many successful procedures for putting patients under general anesthesia occur, on a daily basis, in hospitals and clincs across the developed world? How many millions? Shall we compare and contrast the failure rates, and discuss how training in medical procedures happens? Shall we compare and contrast the supply chain? Then, let's wrap up with an examination of all the obstacles that have been deliberately put into place and into practice, to make life impossible. Let's make it a fair examination, instead of the farce we're accustomed to being expected to take seriously.

My understanding is that the prison officials ran out of time, which prevented them from finishing it, because the death warrant had a time limit. That's stupid. As the old sentence would say: "Hung by the neck until dead". It should obviously be "continue until dead". This was avoidable in a dozen different ways, but once again the really smart experts screwed up something simple. Either that, or it was on purpose. One reason is criminal, and the other one is criminally stupid. There is no excuse for this failure, and there is no excuse to allow it to stand. Do your damned job for once, stop the suffering of the victims, and give them the justice they have been denied for 30 years. Big Mike ने कहा…

IANAL, but the precedent is very well established. If you were sentenced to have your head removed from your shoulders, and the first stroke of the axe (or sword) did not accomplish that, the headsman was expected to keep on chopping until the head was off. “Hanged by the neck until dead,” meant precisely that. If the condemned person survived, whether because the rope broke or the executioner botched the job, the prisoner would have his (or her) neck placed into a new noose and then the trap dropped again.

So it would seem that everything depends on the wording of the death warrant. If it requires that the procedure end in her death then precedent going back centuries requires prison authorities must keep injecting her until a doctor pronounces her dead.

That makes Althouse correct. If Christa Pike’s death warrant called for her to die by lethal injection, then no other method is acceptable. Killing her some other way isn’t an execution — it’s murder.

Of course, the reason for M in MAID is that only qualified doctors are allowed to kill people who are requesting death. Why not a less qualified person? A kid who has taken a two-week course? Well the answer is obvious. Something might go wrong, meaning the patient might live.

One difference between the countries is that Big Pharma supposedly does not permit a state to use the drugs that are actually effective for killing--some substitute has to be found. Of all the things Big Pharma does, including now pushing the so-called Covid vaccines, this of all things would be unethical. But in Canada, if the attempted killing doesn't work, is there a protocol to make sure 9/11 is called nice and quickly, so everything is ethical? Beats me.

Josephbleau ने कहा…

If you think clearly about executions, the objective is the humane death of the person. Does the law really say, blindly follow this procedure and if the procedure fails then you are supposed to stop everything, run around in circles and then decide on an individual basis what you are going to do about it?

I really don’t this that is what the law requires. And it sounds like that was what was done in this case. An officer charged by the state with taking a life should have a legal alternative to use in case of the emergency of a failure. A veterinarian would have a second syringe and not let failure happen. There should be a plan. That is what is disturbing about this case.

Peachy+2 ने कहा…

Again - I just went thru this with a pet at the end of his life. A very old pet suffering and in need to end of life care.
The vet tech administered the first drug, which places the pet in relaxed sleep.
Then slowly - the vet tech administers an over-dose of anesthesia. This slows the heart until the heart stops.
This is the most humane way to end a life.

That they botched it and called 9-11 is very suspicious.

bagoh20 ने कहा…

They didn't need an alternative method. They just needed to do the one they had as intended and ordered to be used: to execute, not to sedate. The argument that nothing else should be done is fine, but the state also did not have the right to deny justice as ordered just because of some arbitrary time limit that was shortened significantly by the stay imposed. The same love-of-protocol argument used here by some strangely doesn't include doing it correctly, completely, or as intended. The argument is that protocol failure is the only valid part of the protocol. That's just covering up a desire to thwart justice that both the murderer and the victims deserve, but you don't want for them.

bagoh20 ने कहा…

All they had to do was give more of the drug. This involves no cruelty, no suffering, and no change to the method. Stopping and trying to save her was simply obstructing justice at the deepest level. Extension of the time limit should be automatic after a stay interferes. What if the stay used up all the time allocated? Do we just cancel the whole thing and ignore the sentence? It's a law circus with real victims continuing to be punished.

What we need to use is carbon monoxide gas from a welding supply house. Odorless, colorless, painless, definitively lethal in a matter of minutes.

Or Fentanyl in a massive quantity. It can be administered intramuscularly with no concern for the condition of the blood vessels of the condemned individual.

Or a firing squad. Has a squad of trained marksmen EVER failed to deliver near-instantaneous death?

"Let's cut this shit."

The people perpetrating this shit don't want to cut it.

Why did the NYT put this out on Instagram?

Since some of you have brought up abortion, I think the question of what to do with Christa Pike when she survived the lethal injection procedure is parallel with what to do with the living baby who survives an effort at abortion. Some doctors favored leaving the infant alone to expire. It wasn't wanted anyway. It was slated for elimination. That seems to be what they were doing to Christa Pike for an hour or so.

You are comparing a baby someone failed to abort to a murderer that tortured her victim and kept trophies.

You can't make this up.

And Ann considers herself a serious person.

It really was an all female execution team, at her request. I thought this was a joke at first (it would have been a good joke), but it was true.

We need to talk about universal suffrage.

The state had no privilege to kill her other than according to the protocol. If you think killing her in some other way is justifiable and even good, you're in the Luigi Mangione school of morality.

LOL!

Ann has rules. An you chuds better listen to her or you are evil like this other murderer because Ann is right and you are evil.

This level of reasoning is how you find a right to abortion in the Constitution.

Process-oriented versus goal-oriented.
Someone should have a pistol, just in case. That's what pistols are for - just in case your silly theater fails at doing what it tries so hard not to do.

You are giving these people too much credit.

They wanted to fail and they didn't want to take responsibility for it.

People like Ann are just morally dishonest. They know that stamping your feet and lashing out emotionally undermine the system but they don't want to take responsibility for anything.

It was good enough for gov't work. After another decade or so of legal wrangling they can try again.
