John Cochrane on affordability- Part 1 key point- As I hope you know, the government cannot, by taxing, spending, borrowing or regulating, make anything “more affordable” overall. All it can do is try to make someone else pay, and then often to give you something you don’t want that much and lose half the money along the way.
Per daily mail - Boris Johnson says Royal Navy should sink any Russian tankers carrying Diesel oil to America. Says Trump is a traitor to Global something or other.
𝘈𝘧𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 1-- We can translate the data into a single indicator: the high cost of Trump.
The administration inherited an imperfect refining system. It did not inherit the particular consequences of its 2026 war with Iran.
And there’s a broader lesson here: energy independence doesn’t mean immunity from foreign-policy mistakes. Even the world’s largest oil producer remains exposed to disruptions in international shipping, refining and fuel markets.
Trump’s promise of energy dominance cannot eliminate those dependencies. In this case, his administration’s actions have helped make them considerably more expensive.
I have received your October 7 letter, which adds to the mounting body of evidence of your complete paucity of knowledge about financial markets. Rather than take my suggestion of studying introductory economics, you have continued your letter-writing crusade and participation in tabloid fodder about the Treasury Department.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to treat your concerns as sincere. As the federal funds rate climbed from near zero to its highest level in 22 years, with inflation hitting a 40-year high, you were a cheerleader for the Biden Administration’s reckless spending. You blamed the economic consequences on the Federal Reserve, rather than your own irresponsible fiscal policies. Your view of the economy depends on who occupies the White House, but your woeful understanding of the issues is consistent.
The “interventions” you describe as “unprecedented” have been underway since May 2024. The buyback program has been well received by market participants in bolstering Treasury liquidity, which reduces market volatility, increases the convenience yield of Treasury securities and ensures the best value for the taxpayer. The continued enhancements optimize Treasury market liquidity in primary and secondary markets. The U.S. Treasury market’s liquidity and performance versus global peers is evidence.
While you voted for a $5 trillion tax hike on everyday Americans, the Working Families Tax Cuts continue to deliver for families and workers across the country. The average refund this filing season was over $3,400, an increase of 11 percent over the previous year. More than 30 million workers claimed No Tax on Overtime, more than 7 million claimed No Tax on Tips, and more than 37 million seniors claimed their enhanced deduction. More than 34 million families claimed the permanently enhanced Child Tax Credit, and millions of families are utilizing Trump Accounts to unlock a new savings vehicle for children. All of which you voted against.
These results are made possible by the employees of the Department of the Treasury, who are working around the clock for the American people. Unsurprisingly, you have responded by criticizing their dedication and aptitude for the job in a recent interview.¹ Despite your malign characterization, the Domestic Finance team you alluded to in your interview is fully staffed relative to historical levels. It is ironic that you have voted against every presidential appointee for a position at Treasury, no matter how impressive the qualifications for the role. Given your newfound interest in Department personnel, I challenge you to reverse course and thoughtfully engage with future nominees and support their confirmation.
Finally, my offer of a Foreign Exchange for Dummies tutorial still stands and if you receive a passing grade on the Yale metric, not the Harvard curve, I would be happy to also include a Fixed Income for Dummies.

Trump appears to have treated a geopolitical conflict as though it were another negotiation in which he could dictate the terms, declare victory and move on. Unfortunately for him, the oil market, Iran and the electoral calendar don’t necessarily negotiate on his schedule.
“ So what did the Professor note about the missing-men Tik-Tok?”
I need to put up a comment there, but my answer is that the guy was only looking in restaurants. I think it tends to mean that women like restaurants and men may be going somewhere else.
Trump negotiates with Vlad Putin and a day or two later Ukrsine and Russia reach an energy agreement. People who glory in their TDS will tell us that it’s coincidence, but they’ve been wrong about everything else.

Men have noticed what a bad deal restaurants have become over the last five years and changed their behavior. Women don't notice or care about the value proposition, it is much more important to them to be seen in highly visible places.

Two political books have appeared on Amazon’s bestseller list: Malcolm Gladwell’s The American Way of Killing (on gun violence) and, much higher on the list, Michael Lewis’s Blockers: Rebels in the Deep State. Blockers is the story of six excellent public servants targeted by the Trump administration. At 256 pages, it was cranked out for the election (I assume). Interestingly enough, Ben Wikler also has a political book out: This Is the Plan: How to End America’s Meltdown and Save Democracy. (came out in July) Ben Wikler: “If just 114,885 Trump voters—spread in the right proportions across the “blue wall” states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania—had flipped their votes over to Kamala Harris, she would have won. That’s less than 0.1 percent of the votes cast nationwide. How about the GOP’s U.S. House majority? In 2024, that was the product of just 7,309 votes across three ultra-close House races.” This isn’t his point, but you can see the temptation to cheat.
"Fuck all of y'all! It was the BBQ. I'm not mentally ill. I'm just barfing a lot. MOOOOOOOOOO! I might be a mad cow. Debate me, you lazy eye fucker."
Paxton: "Never, Damien! Don't look at me. I am not jumping off a cliff."
It's a hell of a race, whether the mad cow symptoms take the kid out, or he blows Paxton's face off from across the room. That's a pretty good fight in Texas.
Meanwhile, in South Carolina, the damn socialist says, "she changed her name!". Oof. Those ladies are polite.
James Taranto used to have a theory in his Best of the Web blog (WSJ) about how the adversarial Media helps Republicans by asking biting questions and the tongue-bathing approach Media has toward Democrats harms them by coddling and protecting them from harsh questions, as you see clearly in the Paxton vs Talarico contest in TX.
Would a Republican get away with a drive-by comment (“I had the flu”) with no follow up questions? No. That same situation would “raise more questions than answers” as they say.
Now consider the 2024 Presidential Election. Democrats entire ticket was from states under almost 100% Democrat rule, CA and MN. And because those candidates were used to fluffing and supportive DNC-Media treatment all their careers they withered and looked foolish on the national stage. Neither Walz nor Harris was then or is now able to handle adversarial press. Hell, Harris was fatally wounded by a softball question on The View!
Anyway that’s been on my mind. Democrats should pick a candidate who is not a sheltered pet of the Media next time.
The Talarico thing is bizarre. Does he not have campaign personnel? Was he so sick that he couldn't provide video updates? Did no member of the media try knocking on his door?
Also if there is some strain of "the flu" that knocks out 37-year old men for two weeks at a time, isn't this a matter of real public urgency? Why haven't we been hearing about lots of people close to him having similar symptoms? Why aren't Pfizer and Moderna all over this?
I find it amusing that Dr. Abdulrahman Mohammed al-Sayed has the same wardrobe as Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Form fitted black t-shirt and jeans. The casual Fetterman look, no matter the venue.
Trump announced an energy ceasefire. That’s not the same as securing one.
Zelenskyy initially said the announcement was news to him. The Kremlin didn’t confirm the agreement. Russia continued attacking Ukrainian energy infrastructure, including a power plant in Kharkiv.
So where is the evidence that Putin agreed to anything?
An announcement is not an agreement, and an unconfirmed claim is not a diplomatic breakthrough. Calling it one doesn’t prove Trump negotiated a deal; it proves only that he announced one.
Pointing out the difference isn’t TDS. It’s reading the news.
Some people tell me Trump is on the ballot and he's losing badly. I don't know. Never met the guy. Saw him once on Fox. Didn't look so good. Not so good. May not be up to it. BUT republicans can be trusted. True American Patriots. They can say they're going to vote for this or that commie, but in the end, they're True American Patriots. That's what my people tell me. Uniformed True American Warriors at polling stations checking Real IDs. I'll let you know how it turns out. I mean if Trump wins he will be certain it was a beautiful election. Very beautiful.
