Seems the starlink Ukraine controversy is finally becoming more clear. The Ukrainians engineers were hacking Starlink to use it for things in violation of the terms of service. Including offensive weapons. Starlink "patched" its system, and when it did the Ukrainian hacks no longer worked.
Meanwhile the WSJ is lying and quoting anonymous sources in the DoD that Musk is doing this or that. Who cares? The WSJ has no credibility. They lie at the drop of a hat. So, name your sources or its not true.

The claim that Ukraine had hacked Starlink to bypass speed restrictions is unsubstantiated. There’s no credible evidence that a routine software update broke a Ukrainian workaround. Presenting speculation as established fact doesn’t make it so.

Nothing in the Trump administration happens that doesn’t involve “the family” wetting its beak. Crony capitalism has been displaced by the Golden Age of Grift.
Just read that tickets for Brewers World Series games start at $2000.00. wow, really nice to know that normal people can afford it. Pretty sure one or all of them will appear, for the 'people'.
So the Somali who has openly stated she represents Somalia in the US House is running for reelection. But this time, it's been pretty much uncovered she's not a US citizen.
So let's say the day after the election, which she will likely win because she represents Somalia, and Somalians pretending to be Americans are a large part of the voter base in her district, John Nagel files suit in state court to be certified the winner, as ineligible candidates can't win elections. This will force the citizenship question to be answered before the federal judiciary finally gets around to handling it. Now the House can determine it's own membership- it's in the Constitution. Whether the state courts act or not- John Nagel can petition the House to take the matter up. If she is seated, and subsequently deported- the Democrats still won't provide the necessary votes to get a 2/3 majority to expel her. Unless they realize that will cost them to lose control of both Houses and the Presidency in 2028.
Great news for the Democrats as Trump has fully demonstrated how incompetent and ineffective he is.
The US had a nuclear agreement with verification procedures in place with Iran that the stable Genius ripped up, just because it had Obama's name on it. Now, after 8 months of aimless war egged on by Bibi, Trump has put himself in a tough position for the midterms because he has no response for Iran as energy prices continue to rise unless he capitulates and decides to make a deal. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
As a 12 year old in Oct 1982, I was rooting for the Brewers against the Cardinals. That did not work out so well for the Brewers. Hope 2026 will be the Brewers year. Still hard for me to think of the Brewers in the National League. Just feels wrong.
How can there be massive social dissatisfaction in a socialist nation like France, with low levels of income inequality, low levels of military spending, a massive commitment to social welfare spending (65 percent of the budget), and a high degree of tolerance and diversity? Maybe they need the help of the New York Times Editorial Board. I'm pretty sure that they know how to fix everything.

Maher had a good show last night, with Karoline Leavitt, Steve Hilton and Andy Bashear. Lots of excellent one-liners. A pretty nice analysis of France, although he focused on the economic issues, not the immigration/cultural problems. After explaining how way too much money in socialist countries goes to the elderly and frail, and not enough to the young and strong so that they get launched on the path to making money for the elderly and frail, he closed with "France is famous for two things: welfare and oral sex. And in both cases, we can't all just receive." CC, JSM
He also mentioned the Lindsey Graham gay sex revelation, and added "well, that answers the question: what is the opposite of an October Surprise?" CC, JSM

Which Iran promptly and repeatedly ignored. You don't really think those tunnels and centrifuges were built just since Trump was president, do you? You really are the dumbest person here. No, seriously. You have no reasoning skills.
"He" in my 5:39 AM comment refers to Bill Maher, the subject of a comment before that which was disappeared. That one was longer and talked about other things Maher said on last night's show. I won't repeat them so that this one doesn't also get thrown from the helicopter. CC, JSM
Oh look the patron saint of massaging poll numbers Nate Silver is now trying to wiggle out of the whole Wedgewood mess. Nate personally chose to heavily weight the fake numbers and include them in two of his “hot” bulletins.
Because Nate like almost all pollsters is there to cheer on D and suppress excitement for R votes. We see you unscientific click monkeys. We know your game. We know longer fall for the pretend horse race you’re calling.
When it takes an average of 240 calls to get ONE answer then all the normies have self selected “opt out” and all you are truly “polling” is the weirdos who still wait by the landline for someone ANYONE to call.
Yes. Among others. Though I did see RCO right up top with a salient point about Ukrainian hackers trying to change the Starlink system to their advantage.
Talarico is fading. Don’t be surprised if he loses by a comfortable margin. I noticed the same is happening in the Collins race. Looks like Republicans are starting to come home.
There has been a chain of stories in the WSJ culminating in one about Trump allegedly asking Musk to re-enable capacity. Early stories covered how Musk had initially had discussions with Trump and other senior government figures before the slowdown, with Musk saying the decision came from the government. It seems clear that it did come from administration, but that Trump has been surprised by the extent of the Republican backlash and that Musk has agreed to take the flack on this to try and make Trump look better going into the midterms.
Hi RCOCEAN, I agree that SpaceX has good reasons to enforce restrictions on how its commercial Starlink service is used, especially when it comes to weapons. I also think it makes sense to be cautious about reports based on anonymous sources.
Personally, I haven't found solid evidence that Ukrainian engineers hacked Starlink or that a routine software update disabled those hacks. Would you mind sharing the sources supporting that explanation? Those details could help us better understand what happened and whether the controversy really has been resolved.
On October 24, Ukraine's Ministry of Defense reported that high-speed service had been restored. That's encouraging, although questions remain about who imposed the earlier restrictions and why.
It makes sense to respect SpaceX's contractual rights while still asking reasonable questions about what happened and who was responsible.
A vote for Republicans is a vote for genocide and ethnic cleansing. A vote for Democrats is a vote for nuclear war with Russia over the issue of us putting nuclear missiles and stealth fighters 200 miles from Moscow and denying language rights to historicly Russian area, because for some reason the Ukrainians are willing to fight for us to the last man for these things.
All of this crap is taking place on the other side of the planet, BTW, and trillions of dollars of debt is from fighting these wars.
"Also: No italics, even briefly. Use asterisks for emphasis. And don't play with the format by changing fonts or using boldface or all caps."
I see this is being ignored by one commenter. Are italics allowed if it's being formatted externally and then being pasted into the comments? Is this a rule with exceptions or a rule without consequences?
Here's a BBC article saying all the internet limits on both star link and star shield have been restored. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cwkg5md14j8go
You can grok it yourself but Ukraine military uses star link and star shield. Both uses Musk owned satelites. Star link is commerical and isn't supposed to be used for offensive military purposes. Star shield is used by US military and other militaries. As you'd expect it operates under US Government control.
People including Zelensky and the WSJ seem to be mixing up star link and star shield.
Starlink and Starshield are distinct systems, and conflating them obscures the issue. But that distinction alone doesn't disprove reports of restrictions affecting Ukraine's military operations. The real questions are which system was restricted, who controlled that decision, and what operational consequences followed.
“Is this a rule with exceptions or a rule without consequences?” O, there are consequences. You won’t notice at first. It starts small. Your Amazon package comes a day late. DoorDash leaves your pad thai with the neighbor. A button pops off your shirt. Then your fitted sheet won’t stay on that one damn corner, your phone only charges if the cord is held at a certain angle, every song stuck in your head is a car insurance jingle. And one day you’ll type something really important, and it will come out in Comic Sans.
I know this come as a shock, but looking at front page of the Minnieapolis Star Tribune makes no mention of their famous Congress Chick Ilhan Omar/Elmi.
“Talarico is fading. Don’t be surprised if he loses by a comfortable margin. I noticed the same is happening in the Collins race. Looks like Republicans are starting to come home.”
I don’t see that. Rather, the polls are likely tightening because the election is not that far off. Pollsters who don’t tighten up their fake polls right before an election, to match reality, tend to be ignored next time around. The Dems do this for every major election. Nate Silver is in this crowd. His prognostications are respected. That’s where his money comes from.
Tallerico is just too wacko liberal to win in fairly red TX. By claiming that Jesus had 6 genders, instead of being male, is ahistorical nonsense, and is likely to lose most of the Christians of most denominations in TX (I expect that most of even the Presbyterians, where he is a minister, don’t agree with him). Even the non accepted Book of Mary doesn’t go there. (She was supposedly very close to Jesus, possible even his wife, but in her Gospel, Jesus was still very male).
“ I know this come as a shock, but looking at front page of the Minnieapolis Star Tribune makes no mention of their famous Congress Chick Ilhan Omar/Elmi.”
And if it was restricted, why was it restricted? If it was restricted, why is the presumption that it should never be restricted? Why is it presumed that Ukraine is entitled to these systems?
“ Starlink and Starshield are distinct systems, and conflating them obscures the issue. But that distinction alone doesn't disprove reports of restrictions affecting Ukraine's military operations. The real questions are which system was restricted, who controlled that decision, and what operational consequences followed.”
We know the answers to all those questions, though with your selective reading, you may not.
- the decision to slow up StarLink for the Ukrainian military was made at the top of StarLink. Very likely for strategic business reasons. That really means Musk. Hence the attacks on him, and Krugman’s suggestion that the USG take over the company.
- Ukraine was using StarLink to control its missiles and drones in near real-time. This was considered offensive military use of the StarLink network. It increased the accuracy of their missiles and drones. StarLink policy is no offensive military usage of its network. Maybe there is some moral aspect to that policy, but I suspect that it mostly was to make it more palatable to our quasi-enemies, such as Iran, Russia, and China, for being allowed to operate in those countries. In short, a strategic marketing decision.
- I expect that Musk discussed this with Trump when the policy was implemented. Likely, Musk explained why, and. Trump, with a business degree and experience, understood Musk’s explanation of Why the policy.
Here's Barnacle Jaq (8:39am) repeating the same stupid lie I've corrected three or four times before, most recently less than 48 hours ago:
"A vote for Democrats is a vote for nuclear war with Russia over the issue of us putting nuclear missiles and stealth fighters 200 miles from Moscow."
Here's what I wrote on Thursday at 3:44pm on the Musk thread (link):
"Jaq keeps claiming that it's only 200 miles from Ukraine to Moscow, because he's too lazy to look at a map, or too stupid to know how to measure distances on a map. The fact is that the nearest part of Ukraine to Moscow is ~320 miles away, and that the nearest part of Latvia, already a member of NATO, is only 380 miles from Moscow. The speed of nuclear missiles makes a difference of 60 miles trivial, and only a moron thinks anyone in NATO is the slightest bit interested in a first strike. Again, Barnacle Jaq repeats Putinite propaganda straight off of RT - which, by the way, has numerous talking heads talking about nuking us."
When will Barnacle Jaq stop repeating Putinite propaganda? Most likely, only when the paychecks stop.
"Why is it presumed that Ukraine is entitled to these systems?"
About a year ago, Musk suggested de-orbiting ISS. Folks I worked with at NASA were apoplectic that Musk would suggest such a thing. Musk was just repeating exactly what the NASA Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel recommended. Yet, my response to them was "who do you think keeps the ISS flying at all?" See, these NASA employees failed to advance the Orion capsule, Ares-I to launch it, X-38, or any other vehicle and launcher to keep ISS operational. SpaceX did. They built Dragon cargo, Falcon 9, and later Dragon crew; which ended NASA's dependence on Russia to keep ISS flying. Yet, these NASA employees felt entitled to have access to that equipment to keep ISS (which they have also failed to advance a replacement).
Ukraine and its EU simps are simply doing the same. They have failed to make anything, have made themselves dependent on others, and now demand those, who provided them access to something, give them everything. Marxism straight up.
You’re presenting speculation as fact. A contractual restriction on offensive use may explain SpaceX’s policy, but it doesn’t establish why this particular slowdown was ordered or whether it was justified. Reports indicate the restrictions disrupted both Ukrainian strike-drone and defensive operations. And your claim that Musk discussed it with Trump beforehand is disputed; Trump’s involvement and the precise chain of authority remain unclear. A plausible business rationale isn’t proof of what actually happened or a defense of its consequences.
“ If it was restricted, why is the presumption that it should never be restricted? Why is it presumed that Ukraine is entitled to these systems?”
Working backwards, it’s mostly Dems complaining. Ukraine is their war. They bought Biden, and he stayed bought. It’s fine to poke the bear, but how far do we push the Russians? We try to get the two sides together, but Ukraine doesn’t want to participate. They feel that they don’t have to, because the Dems, in this country, have their backs. Their war is costing us money, and, in particular, is cutting into our supplies of critical military munitions. Trump wants this to end, and is attempting a negotiated settlement. The Ukrainian leadership essentially is blowing him off, but still expects major help from the US, which we continue to give them.
I should add that the second half of Barnacle Jaq's 8:39am sentence was also a lie: ". . . denying language rights to historicly Russian area, because for some reason the Ukrainians are willing to fight for us to the last man for these things."
No one was ever hindered from speaking Russian or reading Russian books in Donbas or anywhere else in Ukraine. On the other hand, the Russians have destroyed all Ukrainian-language books in the occupied areas, including the ethnically-Ukrainian ones, throwing the books out the windows of the college libraries. They also make a point of bombing publishers' warehouses in unoccupied Ukraine: destroying a third of all the unsold books in the country just in time for the start of the school year. They also beat people heard speaking Ukrainian in the classroom or on the street. And all that's just fine with Barnacle Jaq.
“You’re presenting speculation as fact. It’s not speculation when this started. It started in response to Ukraine using StarLink for offensive military operations. StarLink shut it down, and announced their policy. Ukraine complained. StarLink ignored them. Recently, we found out at least one reason how StarLink was implementing this policy - by slowing down their network for the Ukrainian military. Was it just telemetry (etc) data that was being slowed down? Don’t know. Doesn’t matter.
I don’t know if Trump and Musk talked about this in advance. Neither do you. Trump doesn’t appear to have twisted Musk’s arm. But he has other issues involving Russia on his mind. In particular, he wants Russia to sit on the sidelines in regards to his sanctions on Iran. And they are ostensibly cooperating. Iran is right across the Black Sea from Russia, and they could easily resupply them with the missiles they so desperately need, but haven’t. Iran is Trump’s major concern. Ukraine is just a nuisance.
I agree that I was speculating. But I don’t see Trump ordering Musk to cripple StarLink for the Ukrainians. Which leaves the decision with StarLink. It could have been a moral decision. But a long term business strategy decision appears to me to be more likely. Esp with China preparing to take the StarLink system down, if they want to.
There is no escaping the rather bald conclusion that a message was being sent, and that it was received, and left them smarting. And that operations have been restored, but probably not left where they were before.
The rumor that Ukrainians were hacking the system is spot-on consistent with my experience with Ukrainians, just sayin'.
My pals in the business say that the limitation was that the satellite terminal itself was not allowed to travel more than 100 mph, this is to limit the system to defensive communication applications. Although it is not public, Spacex, the US government, and Ukraine have a contract that specifies what is allowable use of the system. It would not surprise me that Ukraine would push the limits because they are at war. It would not surprise me that if Ukraine did that, the US or Spacex would modify the system to prevent the contract violation.
But we don’t know what happened. Yet some here are prematurely assigning blame.
It’s like, I hack a password that lets me play an online video game at high resolution when I did not pay the extra fee. The game company blocks the password and I go to low resolution. I scream and yell because I could not finish my game in high rez. You get the service you pay for in your contract, don’t complain.
Now we don’t have enough information so see if this story applies to Ukraine at all.
People talk as if there’s a choice whether the International Space Station is deorbited or remains in service—but there may well be no real choice. Since 2019 the PrK transfer tunnel on the Russian Zvezda service module (a core element of the Russian segment) has shown progressive cracking and intermittent leaks, with NASA rating the risk of catastrophic structural fatigue failure high. Why do you think the American residents of the station take refuge in their Crew Dragon lifeboat when the Russians prepare to do serious work on that section?

𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 5: 𝘗𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴

Doesn't require a 2/3 vote as expelling a member does. Simply requires Congress to determine- was she even eligible run? If not, she couldn't win, and John Nagel was the eligible candidate with the most votes.

Paxton would be better in the Senate.

How can there be massive social dissatisfaction in a socialist nation like France, with low levels of income inequality, low levels of military spending, a massive commitment to social welfare spending (65 percent of the budget), and a high degree of tolerance and diversity?

I agree on the Troy Jackson fade in Maine. If he had married his sister instead of his cousin he would have a shot.

Star shield is used by US military and other militaries. As you'd expect it operates under US Government control.

Starlink and Starshield are distinct systems, and conflating them obscures the issue. But that distinction alone doesn't disprove reports of restrictions affecting Ukraine's military operations. The real questions are which system was restricted, who controlled that decision, and what operational consequences followed.
“Is this a rule with exceptions or a rule without consequences?”
O, there are consequences.

“Tied at 49-49?”
I think there’s a Said in there too.

I don't use italics, and can't post in Barf Bold no matter how much some commenters deserve it.
There is no escaping the rather bald conclusion that a message was being sent, and that it was received, and left them smarting. And that operations have been restored, but probably not left where they were before.
The rumor that Ukrainians were hacking the system is spot-on consistent with my experience with Ukrainians, just sayin'.
Caspian Sea (not Black)
And my 5:38 AM comment about Maher reappeared. Thanks, Meadehouse! CC, JSM
